I'm not a on the fire Caldwell train just yet, but I wouldn't be mad if it happened either. I like Jim bob.
The defence has been bad. Missing levy and Ziggy obviously hurt, but they need to make some significant improvements if the lions have a chance of doing anything this season

While i like Caldwell, i don't think we can win a Super Bowl with him at the helm. While i think our immature team in years past needed that steady "father figure" to remain calm in the storms. I think with this new group, we need a coach that they can believe in not one that can just hold the ship together.

I actually really like Quinn and his approach however i think his biggest mistake so far is getting to loose with letting go talent because "he can scout". I think at some point even the best scouting work can't make up for the loss in talent.

absolutely right, and the players believe in him. Why not give it a shot, if he does poorly quin has no problem making moves

Yep, and the NFL as entertainment is wildly overrated. Not at all hard to go and see a movie Sunday afternoons - I'll flip through games or Red Zone if I happen to not be doing anything. I'd easily take college football or pro basketball over it. Baseball and college basketball are meh for me, but still rank above the NFL. Lost much of my interest in it years ago.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

The Tigers took it down to the last day of the season when most preseason predictions had them well out of it. Most fans would happily trade places. Even as someone who didn't want Ausmus back this season, I have to say he deserves credit for this team never quitting and this run. He deserves another year.

I didn't see a single preseason prediction that they should be well out of it. Everything I saw was that they should contend for the division or a wild card. This team clearly showed that they could beat up on #3, 4 and 5 starters but couldn't beat #1 and 2 starters because the offense would fizzle out. Today's game was a perfect example. My problems with Ausmus:
1. Didn't move VMart down in the lineup when he was clearly struggling. VMart should have been moved to 6 with JD and Upton moving up to 4 and 5 respectively a month ago.
2. Continued to send Shane Greene out as the "go to" middle reliever for the last two weeks when he was clearly struggling.
3. Continued to the play the "Ok, he hasn't given up a crapload of runs just yet this inning; let's keep going with him and see what happens" game with pretty much all the pitchers. When the offense is going, fine. But when your offense has put up a donut through four innings then your starter gives up three runs in the fifth and the bases are still loaded, it's time to get him out. I don't care what the bullpen situation is; you don't keep playing chicken with an oncoming train.

Irony this year for the Tigers is that the aging vets performed fine to awesome (Verlander was awesome, Cabrera was good, and Victor was fine). On paper that should have meant one last playoff run.

Unfortunately we got a bunch of injuries from guys who should be in their primes, and in the end with everybody back just didn't play well enough.

Once again, will be shocked if Ausmus gets another year. Not sure that's fair. He's had injured and unreliable pitching throughout his tenure. Unreliable pitching (especially in the pen) tends to make managers look a lot worse because there's a higher likelyhood of their choice backfiring when it comes to deciding who to pitch and when.

Admittedly, if given the hypothetical choice of having either Ausmus or Caldwell back, i.e. you can get rid of one but have to keep the other, I'd easily keep Ausmus.

Tigers have had an unreliable bullpen for most of the last two decades. It's really odd... Illitch will spend insane money on position players and starters, but we've almost never shelled out for a couple of dominant relievers, particularly setup men, via free agency. When we have, it's often worked well... Benoit did his job here, for example.

This.

The Tigers should have some championships if they just had reliable relievers the last 5 or so years.

The Tigers have been plagued by the same problems since Zumaya ruined his career playing Guitar Hero. The last several World Series champions have had lock down bullpens / played excellent defense / were able to scratch out runs in close games while those three have been major deficiencies for the Tigers. The money going to Sanchez / Pelfry / Lowe is a killer, it's $30 mil in 2017, that's enough money to make both Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen the highest paid relievers ever in FA and still have some money left over.

I think Ilitch has unquestionably been one of the best owners in sports, but I do think his open check book has created an atmosphere that allows for poor drafting and poor minor league player development.

I'm not sure which was worse, the Pistons / Tigers "Cleveland Sweep" week in the spring or this past weekend's Braves/Bears double stomach punch.

The most recent one is usually worst. (At least, that's how it usually feels.)

Yes, but I guess technically the first one eliminated us from both the NBA and MLB playoffs.

This is so confusing to me. Basketball is so fluid, While Football is a stop and go game chessmatch.

I like strategy(Fire emblem shoutout!) but I just dont get it, and add to the fact that the Lions are the worst sports franchise that has ever seen the planet earth, football doesnt even exist to me. I did like the years of seeing pictures of fans with bags over their heads though and I have a running bet on the Lions every year for the past twenty with a die-hard lions fan that I can count on like death and taxes.

:dontknow:
