OT: The Birth of a Nation

Post#341 » by Dr. Detfink » Sat Oct 8, 2016 3:04 pm

Anyone check it out yet? Caught the late, late show last night. Outside of personal issues surrounding Nate Parker, I found it to be pretty much the Pre-Civil War Braveheart. Beautifully shot. Visceral scenes involving the torment of slaves. Pretty much form and function.

I think Armie Hammer did a fine job as Nat Turner's childhood playmate, assuming the role as "Slave master." One of the things that I find a lot of slavery films miss, pretty much the white characters are seen like one-dimensional mustache twirling villains. What is pertinent and echoes today is how individuals who have some semblance of a moral compass can support EVIL things. That points at the audience members who are like, "Oh I wouldn't be THAT person..." Because at the end of the day, no one in this life aims to be poor.

There's a lot of theological visualization that goes back and forth from African spirituality to Christianity. I did like the look of Virginia country side as this modern Garden of Eden that carries a terrible sin.

Few interesting directorial choices:
Spoiler:
As if you didn't need enough reasons to kill every white person in the film, the story has two rape scenes that were not historically accurate but will definitely push some buttons.

Secondly, there's a lot of violence involving the slavery rebellion but they cut out slaves killing children and babies, which is what put this rebellion on the map that reaches the White House.

Third, I hate text epilogue and yet, the most powerful moment was not filmed. That being, Nat Turner's body was used for wagon grease and other products as to try and erase his memory from history but in fact, he's become an American legend. You just read that. There's zero information on his wife and kid, still left in slavery. Since we know, Nat Turner's descendants are alive and own cotton farms, one wonders why didn't the slave masters whose own family member was killed by Nat didn't choose to distance themselves. I just wanted to know more.

Worth seeing.

Just don't see it at 23:50 at AMC Battery Park with a few kid winos stirring in 20 min into the movie with an edgy bag check/ticket/usher who thought a small bag full comic books signed at NYCC were housing a weapon of mass destruction (this is no exaggeration) and hastily forced me to throw out my iced coffee with the concession stands closed.

I'm Hispanic and have lived in queens most my life but I also lived on 110 and my grandma lives there. Love to have a show that is easy to relate to. Not that the other shows are bad cause of that cause they're still really good but this one def feels like one of our own and anyone complaining about lack of diversity is a moron who hasn't paid attention to every other all white superhero movies and shows. Luke cage is a beast.

This dude was the worst. When I seen him I thought of a bootleg Robocop. This show has yet to find its balance and its hurting what could be more epic. To me Diamondback is only brought in, to fill the role of "super villain" but at this point in the story he is a cheesy super villain. It would have made much more sense to just weaken cotton mouth if you wanted a small moral victory, but keep him in the shadows as he refuses to give up and bring him back later in the story in more powerful plot. They instead kill of the character and with that a HUGE dynamic.

It wanted to be more marvel, and bring a more "traditional" comic book villain in,but could not find a correct balance of two larger villains in the show. I think you can achieve and still have cottonmouth. Luke Cage is a Hero for hire than means there is multiple threats he is dealing with at one time. Luke Cage has the chance to be much better if they learn from some mistakes they made the first season. I will give them a second chance in season 2, but it has to be better. This can't be considered the best season of the series. That would suck.

I remember seeing the promo trailer for this. It looked good. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the reminder!

Another problem with this show is that the writers basically inserted a cheat code and made Luke invincible while powering down all his comic book heroes, thereby removing any sort of tension from the story. Either give him legit weaknesses or power up his enemies next season.

Spoiler:
The way I viewed him., there really was no place else for Cottonmouth to go. He was stagnant and easily diminished. People hypothesized him perhaps collaborating with D'nofrio's Kingpin later. He would've been an underling to Fisk. He was one to Diamondback so, was Shades and Mariah. Fact of the matter is., there really was no more use for him. Truth be told, I hated how early he went and how but., I was expecting him to go nonetheless. Think about it., some people tend to forget about Zemo in Civil War but., he was so much more intricate and detailed than CM. "I know. Let's take all my money and put it in one place." WTF!?!?

He would've never had sat at the table with all of the bosses and what was the first thing Diamondback did when he showed up?

I doubt anything happens though.

That's awesome. What'd she think? Why didn't you go?

I wore a Superman shirt - was going to go with my Under Armour one, but went with a regular shirt. Had 3 people say I looked either more like Superman than Cavill, I looked like Cavill as Superman, or I look legitimately like Superman (because of the chin, smile, teeth, and build). That was pretty awesome. Someone said I should head to Hollywood. :D

Second year in a row I went with my dad and we've decided we're gonna begin a tradition. Love being with my people.

Spoiler:
I kinda like where the show took Cottonmouth. I don't think he would have been a satisfying big bad, and the show was giving signs from the beginning with his screw-ups. From the beginning, he looked kinda incompetent, was under Diamondback's thumb, all his plans got foiled so easily by Luke...it feels like the show did that on purpose. The way that episode showed it, there's a reason for all his screw-ups...he wasn't made for the life. He wanted to be a musician, and he couldn't even sell his club when he needed to. When he was thinking about how to kill Cage, it was Mariah that was giving him all those ideas about drowning him, etc. etc. I think the show was going for a DeAngelo Barksdale vibe at the end (hope I spelled it correctly), and man, I thought his life and death were tragic at the end.

I also think Mariah is gonna be a good villain, and seeing how she played the role...it was a good move in my opinion.

I was let down a lot by the series, partly because it felt like a nearly perfect construct and that got my expectations up, but even with the letdown it was still very watchable - and "PLO Style was my joint back in the day" was one of the single most enjoyable scenes I've ever seen in a TV show.

You're expecting the cameo in that situation to be the guy playing a role in the series, and instead it's really him AND the main character breaks focus and shouts him out. That was such an incredibly enjoyable moment. I was grinning and laughing like a little kid.

Spoiler:
Cottonmouth was let go too early...it made the momentum of the show on the decline.
Also, I thought Shades should of got super powers from the prison somehow...make him more useful than just being an informant. The show needed more super humans.
