“We’re very fortunate to have him, I know that,’’ Van Gundy said. “It would be a major failure on my part, to be quite honest, if that kid’s not a good player. Look, he’s not only got the size and the skills, he has the talent. He has the approach and the makeup. It’s not like you’re telling him things and he’s ignoring them. He’s got a long ways to go. What he does in the weight room with Jordan (Sabourin) will be huge. What he does with Otis (Simth) and the other coaches … the teaching and development will be huge. What we do coaching him will be huge.

"He has the right approach. Henry was terrific today. He’s a sponge. He wants to learn everything.’’

Van Gundy said he would go with veterans first in the regular season because there’s a trust factor and history. But the rookie is lurking in the wings as his defense and rebounding improve.

Just for laughs, go read our draft thread when Ellenson was drafted and the outrage people had for us drafting "some goofy white dude".

You could see his skillset in the highlight tape of him too.I was a little worried about his D, but seemed to me when he ran fast breaks he didn't look as slow as some said he was. So I had hope. So far in the pre season he has played well.

And we almost lost him to a rampaging Aussie -

Backup center Aron Baynes had surgery on his broken nose Tuesday and won’t be available for tonight’s exhibition finale against the Toronto Raptors (7:30, streaming at pistons.com). He's expected to be available for practice later this week. He already has a mask from a previous broken nose.

Baynes took an elbow to the face from rookie Henry Ellenson in practice. Van Gundy said Baynes was visibly angry.

“With the surgery and staying home this morning, he has time to calm down -- and young Henry may survive the ordeal,” Van Gundy joked.

lmao

Imagine you had to play all last year with a broken nose and a mask, it's finally justtt about completely healed after an intense regular season, playoffs, and olympics... and then some over-eager rook comes in and clocks you in the face and breaks it again at practice during the last week of pre-season.

Not a game... not practice... training camp!
