And that means that Hayward's situation will be resolved first, since he's likely to opt out this summer and Favors expires a season later, which is what I'm saying. Of course, if\when Hayward signs a new deal with the Jazz and is locked long-term, all bets are off. That also means that if the Jazz wanted to trade Favors after Hayward signs a new deal, they'll get less value for him since he'd be on an expiring deal with no team option.

I wonder if the ability to extend Favors would increase his value over a typical expiring.

I don't know. If he's traded, can he still restructure his contract with the new team? Good question. Then again, at that point, why would he? He'd be better off going into unrestricted free agency and have teams throw the max at him, and he'd also be able to choose where he wants to go. So in the end, I think him being expiring will still hurt his trade value either way.

Did he miss shootaround because he's still injured, or is he going to not play vs Portland as a punitive action for missing shootaround for another reason?

Missed because of injury.

It's ridiculous that this game isn't on tv... anywhere.

I tried to go to nba.com, they want ten bucks for audio league pass to listen on the radio. Rubbish.

My observations from the fifth row:

Dame made Dante look like CRAP tonight. Oh man...That was a stink fest! The kid got ABUSED. Hood missed everything, too. George Hill did not do much better defensively, but at least he did something on offense. Shelvin Mack actually looked good in bringing the team back.

My prediction in that season opener thread? Yeah, I think Lillard read that.

Dante had a rough night, as did the rest of the team. They played great offense but missed so many layups and wide open 3's. It happens. I'm glad Exum stayed aggressive throughout.

Blazers are probably better than most people want to give them credit.

Close ballgame against a very tough team without our star players, I'm not worried. Didn't want to show them anything they might be able to use against us next Tuesday when it really matters. Mostly just interested in who the final cuts will be and if we'll carry an extra player or two and put Hayward and Burks on injured reserve.
"But if you want to win, you have to teach a player how to win. That's why I don't believe in tanking, all that stuff. You don't learn how to win by losing on purpose to get a 19-year-old who you've never seen." -Rudy Gobert, 2017/18 Season

The nba doesn't have injured reserve.

I agree and I think they kind of have the Jazz's number. It's frustrating to watch.

It's weird because when they were supposedly better with Batum, Mathews and Aldridge and we were bad, we actually were matching up better against them and blew them out a couple of times that last year of the old Blazers, and now we can't hang with them.

Portland really does know how to take advantage of us. They are very sharp, even in the preseason. We make so many little mistakes and they take advantage of all of them. If Favors plays on Tuesday I think we'll actually be worse off because he's so terrible at guarding the perimeter.

Seems like we cut Henry Sims... nothing too surprising.

One of Chris Johnson, Jeff Withey and possibly Raul Neto(?) will be out...

I can't see us cutting Neto. It's probably between Withey and Johnson. My bet is it'd be Johnson and whoever it ends up being, I'll feel bad for them.

Utah Jazz: Derrick Favors’ agent says they are open to contract extension talks
By TONY JONES AND AARON FALK | The Salt Lake Tribune
First Published Oct 19 2016 06:48PM • Last Updated Oct 19 2016 09:17 pm

Utah Jazz power forward Derrick Favors is "amiable" to working out a contract renegotiation and extension, but that no such deal is "imminent," his agent told The Tribune on Wednesday.

Favors became eligible to receive an extension on Wednesday. He has two seasons — including the upcoming season — remaining on his current deal, which pays him almost $11 million this season and close to $12 million next season.

"We are definitely open to talking," Wallace Prather, Favors' agent, told The Tribune.

Since coming to the Jazz in 2011 as part of the Deron Williams trade, Favors has emerged as one of Utah's most important players. Last season, he averaged almost 17 points and eight rebounds per game. At 25 years old, he's rounding into his prime.

The Jazz are facing a potential financial crunch, as they will likely have to hand out max contracts to Gordon Hayward and Rudy Gobert next summer. Gobert, Utah's starting center, is eligible for a contract extension as a fourth-year player until Oct. 31. If he and the Jazz do not reach a deal, Gobert will be a restricted free agent in July.

They are probably waiting for the final cuts to be made. Go get it done, DL!

I don't think we do it, it doesn't make sense, but I'm secretly hoping that we find a trade for Mack. He's been playing fairly well, but I just don't like his style. Whenever he is on the court, it's the Shelvin Mack show. The problem is that the Shelvin Mack show is like a C minus show to begin with.
