I don't get why in those plays with nobody else on you dont practice the second baseman to cover the first. ptichers, especially relievers are just not well equiped for that play.

Why Even Bother Making the Trip to Chicago?

Post#983 » by Ranma » Fri Oct 21, 2016 3:27 am

Neither Kershaw or Jansen can do this by himself. I thought all hands were supposed to be on deck.

I really do think Dave pulled Maeda 4 outs too early. he should have gotten Lester out to finish 4th, then I would have kept the pen running while keeping a close watch on each at bat.

wow.

okay boys I need to finish my today's work which i abandoned earlier to come home to watch this debacle.

see ya'll on Saturday.

Pulling Maeda

I was fine with pulling Maeda at the time given that I said he was becoming predictable despite his gritty effort, but I was rooting for him to go longer precisely because I didn't have faith in our bullpen options for this game. Roberts used most of our quality arms last night in meaningless innings while anticipating extended bullpen usage for Maeda's start today. Part of me sees why our manager would do that in order to evaluate personnel in low pressure situations, but like I said, we knew we were going to need multiple relief arms today.

Dave says he wants to put his players in positions to succeed but I don't see that being the case with his bullpen usage last night. His faith in **** and belief in giving players like Blanton opportunities to redeem themselves doesn't sit well with me at times depending on the situation.

In any case, I hope you don't have to spend too much time back at the office. See you Saturday, amigo.

If this is how my season is going to end, then we need to discuss who needs to be purged from this roster:

First name.....Pedro Baez.
Hes learning to pitch. Blah blah blah. This guy sucks consistently in big moments. With Walker and Sheff up and coming, get this guy the FOH.

Relief Options for Next Season

I'm certainly not his biggest fan, but I'm open to keeping Baez in the bullpen in low leverage situations. I'd love to package him in a trade for value, but I don't want to just dump and give him away just yet. I think he holds value to some other clubs more than he does for us. I didn't mind too much losing Holmes and Montas in order to acquire Reddick and Hill even though it was a little overpayment, but I wished we could have kept Cotton as I thought he'd lift our bullpen.

The problem was that they were trying Cotton out as a starter. Sborz has similar value as a prospect still in our system but he's not quite ready for big-league games just yet, I believe.

I think Sheffield should be groomed as our future closer but I'm not sure if he'll be ready to pitch at the Major-League level next season or the one after. He should be coming soon, though. I see Buehler as a starting pitcher so he's at least a couple of years away from the Show.

I don't even mind bringing Blanton back for our bullpen next season, but I don't want to use him in clutch situations, especially in the playoffs. The dude is a goat until he proves otherwise, but he's got a lot to atone for.

Alex Wood is one of our most valuable bullpen arms but he has the ability to start (not for us outside of spot starts), so he may be worth more as a trade asset. I also like Stripling as a bullpen option as well.

Another Missed Opportunity

If only Seager didn't hit into that double play before Ruiz's double. We might have cut the deficit by another run or two.

Not Doing the Little Things Led to Big Collapse

Post#994 » by Ranma » Fri Oct 21, 2016 4:37 am

Left-handed hitters Toles and Reddick came into the game cold and got hits off of left-handed fireballer Chapman to make the game more respectable. Again, if not for Seager's double play, we'd have made the contest more tense.

I want to touch on what I said earlier about playing our best players. Our defense has suffered significantly by playing fielders at less than optimal positions for the sake of platoon splits that we haven't really benefited from. We've literally fumbled away chances to keep the Cubs from gaining confidence and are now on the verge of elimination. We have to do more than keep expecting Kershaw, Hill, and Jansen to bail us out. Defensive miscues are not the only problem. Base-running mistakes and tentativeness have also left opportunities squandered along with our lack of timely hitting.

I don't want to see **** on the field or in the batting lineup unless it's for a brief substitution. Keep Puig in RF and play either Reddick or Toles in LF. Heck, I'm not even opposed to playing all 3 in the outfield with Joc taking a breather on the bench. Play Kendrick at 2B unless Utley gets the start. I don't want these minor weaknesses to continue to plague us as we're fruitlessly hoping to capitalize on a perceived advantage that hasn't materialized yet.

The series isn't over and the Cubs haven't knocked us out until they've knocked us out.

Am I worried? Nervous?
Yes.
Pissed? Yes.

Is this feat impossible? Absolutely not and we have our 2 best arms going.

As Orel said last year, Clayton wants to rewrite his postseason script. Another 7-8 strong here can do it....and if we force a Game 7, we are playing with house money. All the pressure on them.

I get down. I complain but I don't quit. Neither does this team.

This sucks for Kershaw because if he does well, and we win, it's almost expected, but if we get eliminated, it's going to tarnish what has been his first really stellar post season.

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have…and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God (or the FSM). It was never between you and them anyway.

Not serenading you or reading you poetry.
But your post made me think of that poem.
Apologies if it is too corny but.....

Win anyway.
