Whats the difference between stupid and killer instinct though?
Pretty sure you know but I'll play along.
It depends on the game, the situation and the teams involved.
Good gameday coaches know when to pick their spots.Don't get it wrong, all coaches make some questionable decisions at times, but it's all about the frequency of those questionable calls in those specific situations.I don't think Arians is a bad coach but he got that one wrong and it cost his team a win in a huge division game.Hell,Bill Belichick has made some questionable decisions that could be considered dumb but with a guy like that you can live with it because he makes the right call more times than not, that's one of the reasons why he is a great coach and his track record proves that obviously.
If the Cards where in that same situation against say the Falcons and the score was 24-21 I wouldn't say it was a dumb call, even the Cards didn't convert the 4th down I would say it was an aggressive call in that situation.Against the Seahawks and their defense in a 3-0 game it was a dumb call.
On another note, watching the games today I think it's going to be tough for the Packers to make the playoffs as a wild card.Unless the Vikings fall apart which I'm not discounting on possibly happening,I'm not so sure the Packers get in unless they win the division.
Seattle,Arizona and Minnesota have great championship caliber defenses, the Cowboys and Eagles both look really good and then you have your NFC south winner which will probably be Atlanta.
I think the Packers only make the playoffs if Minnesota falls apart and goes something like 8-8 or we beat out the Eagles for that last wild card spot.I'm not confident about either of those scenarios.
Weren't you critical of MM kicking FGs against SEA twice at the goal-line vs SEA in the NFCCG?
Yes I was and I will explain why.
I had a ton of confidence in our offense at that time, the line was playing great and Lacy was a beast in 2014.Rodgers was still Godgers, granted he had a bad calf but in the previous game vs Dallas he was in full Godgers mode in the 2nd half of that game. You had pre blown knee Nelson,Cobb was playing well as was Adams. So while I thought the Seahawks had a great defense,I felt we had a great offense. Our offense was the reason why we were playing in the Championship game and I am go with what got you there kind of guy.
Both possessions came off of turnovers and with that you have momentum on your side.
Even if we don't convert,Seattle starts their drives in their own end zone.
I think by settling for the FGs it gave Seattle a little hope, from their perspective they just committed 2 turnovers deep in their own territory to start the game, yet with 1 TD drive they would have the lead.I know if I was on Seattle I would have been like holy **** we just dodged a huge bullet only being down 0-6.And with the offense the Packers had that time,if I was Seattle I would almost want to go over and thank McCarthy for not going for it from our 1 yard line...lol.I'd be like why is he not going for our throats??...thanks.
Now if we were up 3-0 on Seattle's 20 late in the 3rd facing a 4th & 1and the game was a defensive slug fest,I probably would have been a bigger fan of kicking the FG at that point.
The first possession I was kind of 50/50 on,I wanted McCarthy go for it but I was kind of like ok,fine just kick it.The 2nd one I was 100% go for it.
But think about it,even if we go for it on both and only convert 1 out of 2,we come away with 7pts instead of 6.That 1 extra point would have put us in the Super Bowl.
I thought having two 4th & goals on Seattle's 1 yard line and kicking FGs on both was gutless when you consider how good our offense was, lead by the league MVP at QB.
The Packers will probably never be in a 4th & goal from the 1 in a championship game with the league MVP at QB again our lifetime. Those were rare opportunities,we didn't take advantage.
Like I said before,it's all about the teams involved and the situation at hand. That's how I see it.Good gameday coaches know when to pick their spots and McCarthy is awful in that regard. There's been too many times when he's been aggressive when he shouldn't have been (like not kicking the FG vs the Vikings for example) and too many times when he was conservative when he should have been aggressive like vs Seattle in the Championship game.
