Torrey Smith for Jordan Matthews???

Post#1 » by 49er4life1979 » Tue Oct 25, 2016 4:35 am

Ian Rappaport is saying that the Niners and Eagles may be discussing swapping receivers, Torrey Smith for Jordan Matthews. Eagles get the needed vertical threat, Niners get a WR Chip likes who fits his system, and who is younger than Smith. I would like it if it happened.

Maybe it's just me, but I would trade Torrey Smith for just about anything at this point. My impression is that it's clear he doesn't want to be a Niner, he has terrible body language, and when he's frustrated it's not carried out in anyway that seems constructive. Even if he were to demand targets by getting in the face of the QB/HC, I'd give his frustration a pass, but he just seems in a constant state of gloom.

Don't get excited. As of tonight, it's Nelson Agholor that's being rumored, not Matthews.

Torrey was the first guy to come to mind for me after the Staley "leak" in terms of who else....

I think it makes sense, we're just wasting the poor guy and if we can get something for him, do it. I don't expect much in terms of draft picks.

Matthews will be a stunner for me, i'll take that. I'd be ok with Nelson....

DGB???? GTFO... LOL dont tease me!

Philly is looking to improve their WR corps. Trading Mathews for Torrey would accomplish the opposite of that, so Jordan isn't in play.

That said, I'm absolutely all for moving Torrey, I have never been high on him as player (one trick pony) and hated the signing. His value is currently at an all time low, which normally isn't when you want to move a player. However, in this case if you can get something, anything for him, you have to move him now. As mentioned he always has been a one trick pony, that will not change, and he is not the type of receiver that will be an asset for a young developing QB. Also with his limited skill set, I don't think he is much of an asset in the WR room for young WR's either. Basically. what I'm saying is both his value to the organization and leaguewide will likely only continue to dwindle.

Any kind of draft pick would be great, but even getting a bust back like Agholor is a positive. Agholor might develop into something. Even if he doesn't his contract is much more appealing than Torrey's.

I hope your stress levels are OK because they could go up. :) Although, as of now it doesn't look as likely.

To be fair to Smith, he's getting open, he just doesn't have a QB on the roster who can reliably hit him deep. His team is awful, his numbers are down. I completely understand his frustration.

Having said that, I would make this trade in a heartbeat. Matthews is younger and much cheaper. We're two years from being competitive, and Smith remains a one-dimensional deep threat. By the time we're competitive again, he'll be 29 and losing some of his speed.

Noticed that the two players rumored to be on the trading block are two of the highest paid?

So it's that important to get more cap space?

I dont think its a cap space issue. Staley is 32 and deserves to play for a contender since the 49ers are in rebuild mode and going nowhere anytime soon, so they could use all the picks/younger player they can get. As for Smith, he's a one trick pony who runs one route and is overpaid. He is very frustrated and the Niners could use use a more complete receiver.

He also doesn't fit Kelly's offense at all.

Either he's getting open or he doesn't fit the offense. He can't be both. I would side with Clyde here and say he doesn't fit. Every now and then we get footage of Torrey being open—not getting the ball, but that doesn't tell the whole story. He's being draped throughout games and the QB forgets he's on the field the one pass he isn't.

Why not? Kelly's offense is predicated on quick decision making by the QB and short/intermediate timing patterns by the WRs. That''s not Smith's forte at all. He's a stretch WR that likes to go deep. He wants to be in an offense that has a lot of play-action and five and seven step drops - long enough for him to go deep and for a QB to be able to consistently threaten vertically. This is why he did well in Baltimore. He was a perfect fit for that offense, and an even better fit with Flacco.

Him being open or not has nothing to do with his fit in this offense.
