What's the run down on Hunter? Talented college shooter who hasn't shown the ability to consistently apply it at the next level yet, and can't defend at all?

His shot looks great but so far he hasn't hit anything yet.

He can defend a bit. He's got good BBIQ, and can bring the ball up.

He was more of a streaky shooter in college who had impressive range on the 3ball. He's never been a consistent shooter though, and always had a suspect shot selection.

He's smart, knows how to move without the ball on offense, can make good reads and create shots for others, and while his % hasn't been great he projects as a knock down shooter if he gets consistent minutes. He's got a little of that Steph Curry thing where he's always a threat to shoot, but it comes off more like Austin Rivers in practice. His ball handling and first step need refinement still.

He's slight though, and it gets him in trouble on D. But he's got good anticipation and smarts, so he can make an occasional steal. Refs tend to blow the whistle on him too, and he relies too much on his hands/arms and not his core when defending in space.

Rondo will love him though (Rondo loves smart off-ball players who can shoot), and those 2 will make a good combo if they get time together. He fits a need and I expect him to flourish in your system.
The leaks are real...the news is fake.

He can defend a little bit. He's solid at getting steals in passing lanes but just doesn't have the foot speed to stay in front of his man.

Seems like he might be a good shooter, but there's no great evidence that he can actually shoot well. Awful lateral quickness, but he has long and disruptive arms that lead to deflections and steals. Easily screened. Playmaker-y on offense with pretty good passes on the bounce. Looked disinterested or something(and bad) when I watched him play for our D League affiliate in Maine a time or two last year. Needs to put on serious weight(20+ lbs). If you catch him on the right night, he looks like a really good prospect, but the blah performances are more frequent. Would still have advised using that roster spot on him because I could easily see him in a rotation with more weight and dedication to his game.

No he can't. Interesting to see a "top 4 seed in the East": picking up our castoffs.

meh, i'd pick up RJ if we had a free roster spot. why not? young, potentially good shooter, rookie deal.

but yeah, he can't really defend. worst of all, he can't actually shoot that well in games. shooting guards who can't shoot and can't do anything else at a plus level don't last too long.

I think it says a lot that only 3 players signed that were deadline waivers: Beno Udrih, Bob Bentil and RJ Hunter.

Yup. I'll add that he needs to develop an NBA body as soon as possible.

Not the worst problem in the world.

Our roster is so deep that we let Sully walk and prior to an injury that surprises none of us, he was about to start on ECF runner up. Now our last 2 cuts are gobbled up by other teams.

And 3 of our picks this year were stashed because there is no room. And we have 4 #1 picks from Nets, Clips and Griz over next 4 years.

It's alarming when we lose assets for nothing, but it's pretty great that it doesn't seem to matter that much.

Bentil doesn't count because he was immediately waived again. Also Udrih was claimed off waivers; the other two cleared.

So unless Hunter gets waived again he's the only one who cleared waivers, then signed-- which is actually great news for the Celtics (as was the case with Bentil) because it allows Boston to set off part of their guaranteed contracts and lowers Boston's cap by the same amount.

Hunter is an NBA player with 30 foot range on the jumper. He can make that shot, but he isn't consistent enough hitting it. He doesn't shoot it at a high enough percentage yet in games. So, he needs to find when and how to get his shot off. Once he does that, he's going to be a good 3-point shooting specialist. Right now, he doesn't know where his shots can come from.

He is skinny and can't defend yet, but will learn. Very good all-around player with a good head on his shoulders. He is good enough to be on this team.

I think Danny made a mistake letting RJ go and will regret it.

You may be right about mistake, but team will never regret it. Only way we miss him is if we trade 8 assets for a KG player and end up filling end of roster with D leaguers. We already stashed 3 guys from SL who are better than Hunter and have 4 more picks next year.

Eh I'd still count Bentil because they were clearly eager to get his D-league rights. Not the same obvioulsy, but still shows he was in demand to some extent (at least more than some others).
