The Amazingly Sucky Marcus Thornton Thread
It's just one game into the season, but I thought he deserved one even before Jason "Stiff".

Re: The Amazingly Sucky Marcus Thornton Thread
I'd much rather have Thonton at his salary than Jason Turd at 15M.
Jason Turd
Skill: Being Tall
Thornton will bounce back. He's a shooter. Shot like ass tonight. Next game he could be drilling threes and we'll all be collectively giving him dome

Guys like Thornton offer very little outside of streaky shooting every now and then. He's a typical low risk, low reward Grunfeld acquisition.

Bingo.
He's OK to come in and shoot open threes once in a while.
It's not his fault he's being asked to shoulder a load he can't handle. That's not his game.
It's on EG for not bolstering the 2 spot.
And Brooks for refusing to play Sato, arguably our best player.

So it's pretty clear that Thornton is the second unit SG at this point?
If/when Beal gets injured Thornton will start?

Re: The Amazingly Sucky Marcus Thornton Thread
I know Thornton is not as bad as he shot tonight. But even going back to preseason, Brooks has had him run the offense at times, with Wall (last night) or Burke playing off the ball. He can't handle the ball with pressure, has no athletic ability and has to be one of the most out of shape non-centers in the league. There's no reason for him to play 20 minutes, I don't care if Beal is in foul trouble. At least Jason Stiff is tall and can shoot a medium range jumper.

The little I've seen of McLellan in preseason and last night (and at Miami-FL) makes me think at least he deserves a chance, rookie or no rookie. At least he has some defensive ability and is a good athlete.

Maybe we could get a few games into the season before doing these threads...

Marcus Thornton isn't "amazingly sucky." He's just a veteran minimum, past-his-prime, back of the rotation player whom they seem to want to do things he just plain can't do.
Jason Smith is a much worse player, and we'll be seeing him for three years!

Past his prime is generous. He just turned 29. He's awful and has been awful. Even in his "prime" he consistently posted negative net ratings. He frankly should be out of the NBA and likely would be if it weren't for Ernie.

Re: The Amazingly Sucky Marcus Thornton Thread
No one would mistake Marcus Thornton for an above average, or even an average NBA player. But he's gone for 1500+ minutes a year over 7 seasons, and the numbers I look at are not "net negative." He isn't "awful," he just isn't good.
Again, at a veteran minimum salary, he's a perfectly good pick up. As primary backup 2, as part of a plan to "make the playoffs," forget about it.

And that's the point. He shouldn't be a rotation player and the only reason Smith is in the rotation, is because Mahinmi is injured. If you want to say he's fine for his salary, that's ok if he's the 12th man. Brooks must have no confidence in Sato to throw out a slow, overweight two guard for 15-20mpg, when you preached nothing but defense in the offseason.

While we are in agreement Thornton shouldn't be the backup 2, we weren't going to win last night's game with Satoransky taking his minutes.
This is not definitive, but we were only -3 points in Thorton's 20 minutes. & he wasn't even in the game during the 5 minutes when we went from 2 up to 17 down.
Again, I'm not defending Thornton, but it makes little sense to focus on him at this point.

The thread is a joke but my focus during the entire offseason was hoping this inept organization would try to find a backup 2 to play behind an injury-prone starter. I really don't give a flying you know what that we were -3 points in Thornton's 20 minutes. If we had a better backup 2, we might be +10 points. When I watch the games, I just see somebody who is worse than Gary Neal, who you guys constantly bashed last season and basically blamed for the entire season despite the fact the guy played hurt and ended up playing 40 games.
Not saying Sato is the answer, because I think he's more of a 1, but I'd rather have him in there as a creator. I do like this point of view from last night's game.

If we didn't know better, one might suspect that EG is constructing the roster so as to pre-position his excuses for failure. Like last year, there was little depth at PF with Nene aging and moved to back-up C. Dudley was playing there out of position, along with Humphries and Gooden. Then they needed to trade for Morris to make a playoff run.
This year, the Wizards don't have much at back-up SG, not even someone at the level of Temple. So when Beal goes down EG can attribute the team's struggles to "bad luck," and convince Ted to trade the 2017 pick for a "veteran" SG to make a playoff run.
