Start Reggie at SG next to Ish?

Post#1 » by PistonsSince85 » Sun Oct 30, 2016 11:26 am

Since Beno is obviously a capable backup PG and KCP can't shoot, why not start Ish and Reggie together. Their slashing combined with Reggie's superior shooting (when compared with KCP) will provide a clear boost.

In terms of D, Reggie is long enough to guard the 2.

So we complain RJ can't defend PGs and now we're gonna put him against SGs?

Playing Ish and RJ next to each other would be about the worst perimeter shooting backcourt in league history.

Moreover, I get the sense RJ is useless without the ball in his hands.

It would be the 2nd worst. The worst is actually Ish Smith and KCP.

The narrative that Reggie can't shoot is old. Since he worked with a new shooting coach last off-season he has put up 3 pointers at 35.3% (about league average) on 4.2 attempts per game. He's not a great 3 point shooter by any stretch but he's not bad either.

Regardless, this starting backcourt is a terrible idea.

Why not? Would much prefer Ish hit Reggie or visa versa than throw it to KCP for a brick.

Futhermore, KCP's defense is overrated and doesn't make up for him being a dead zone on offense. He is a roll player/bench SG and its time to mix it up.

Honestly, I would opt for playing him and SJ less to raise their potential trade value. The more they play the less they're worth as teams see how truly worthless they are.

Nah, it wouldn't be the worst perimeter shooting backcourt in league history. Reggie is adequate at least. However it would give the worst defending backcourt in league history a run for it's money. Jackson is awful defensively guarding anybody and Smith isn't any better.

What?

Stop living in the past and focus on the discussion at hand.

OP wants to team Ish with RJ. Unless you've got a thing for midgets then this is a big NO!

You would take a slight step down defensively (although, I think Reggie is actually better suited to defens the 2), but you pick up a huge offensive boost.

Would not be suprised to see this at least tested by SVG.

You're confusing physical size with actual defensive ability. The two are entirely separate entities. In no universe is Jackson a slight step down defensively from Caldwell-Pope. Reggie just can't defend anyone anywhere on defense and isn't slightly better suited at anything on that side of the ball. And that's not going to change.

So "it's time to mix it up"(bolded)

First playoff Pistons team in 7 years.

Two games into the new season

Utter nonsense like this makes me thankful that Stan Van Gundy is in charge of not only coaching, but personel decisions. If not he could end up being beholden to a GM with terrible ideas like this.

If I recall correctly, it was the sticking point in him taking this job, and I'm glad he stuck to his guns.

Yeah, yeah utter nonsense until he throws this rotation out there upon RJ return.

SVG used to talk about a RJ & BJ backcourt. That never happened so don't hold your breath

I think it's definitely something we will see in spurts just to have more playmakers on the court but that's just not a ideal backcourt for anyone full time. That would be taking away each other's strength of dominating the ball. KCP is probably going to be traded at the deadline if he doesn't step it up. SVG clearly doesn't want to give him 20 mil per with his current production seeing as he hasn't locked him up yet and is letting the season play out.
