I've said it before, Stanley doesn't have the quickness and agility on the offensive end, very flat footed and a very slow first step.
With that said I do believe he has potential to be an important piece of our team, especially defensively as well as a play making 4.

Stanley's best role may be as defensive/playmaking PF like Draymond.
Unless his shooting drastically improves, he just doesn't shoot good enough to play a perimeter position.
Remember Draymond started as a SF and wasn't very good there either. He didn't become a star until they switched him to PF.
I think that could ultimately be what happens with Stanley too. The problem is there's just no minutes for him there on this team, and Stan prefers shooters at that spot who can spread the court, so it's doubtful he opts to develop SJ there over Harris/Leuer/Henry.
A trade may be best for both. He needs to be on a lotto team with shooters, where he can get 36 mpg to develop and isn't relied on to be the shooter. The Lakers would be a great fit for him on/off the court (it's his hometown too).
If we could get one of their upcoming lotto picks for him, we should strongly consider it.

You guys gotta slow down, just enjoy the win and quit worrying about trading whoever didn't play well that night

Stanley played fine last night. But that doesn't change the fact that his current game isn't the ideal fit for this team longterm. And that it's going to be hard for him to get better here with so much depth in front of him.
I'd trade KCP first and see what SJ can do with more minutes before trading him though.

Stanley played fine how exactly? Because he didn't make a complete ass of himself out there? Pretty low bar for the 8th pick in the draft.

Re: Game 2: Pistons (0-1) vs. Magic (0-1) - 7:30 PM EST
He played well because he didn't try to do to much offensively (until the late 4th) and played solid team defense and offense. Basically, he took two big steps forward in terms of trying too damn hard and actually fit in.
I'm not gonna lie... I'm very disappointed in Stanley. I'm not in any way giving up on him, but he's having a lot of trouble contributing in some ways, particularly offensively.

A lot of 20 year olds can't defend NBA players at all so him not making a ass of himself and just playing solid D and not rushing anything offensively is fine for him right now. He's a plus player if he's just doing that for now so I'll take it.

Played good defense, made a few nice assists, didn't force any bad shots.
Unfortunately that's the bar for he and KCP right now, because it's at least better than them chucking and playing dumb.
But I agree that's not good enough for 2 8th picks, and we'll eventually need more than that from those spots. Hence why I think one or both should be traded while they still have value for being 8th picks, and not wait for them to bust first.

Stanley isn't gonna be a 4... He's like 6'6"

To be fair, he's only .75 inches shorter than Draymond Green. Green might be right at the bottom of how short you can be as a PF though.

Height has very little to do with position. Stanley absolutely has the strength to play the PF position, and I'm starting to think it may actually be his natural position which puts us in quite the quandary.DetPistons04 wrote:Moose10Fan wrote:I've said it before, Stanley doesn't have the quickness and agility on the offensive end, very flat footed and a very slow first step.

Someone is going to have to be moved in the near future, and if that's the case, I'm all for upgrading the SG position after this year if Pope can't get it together.
Problem is, SG is the current weakest position in the league, so it's going to be a difficult trade.
Barkley was only 6'4 and he was an amazing PF (he played alot of different positions. The original versatile forward)and Stanley with his combo of strength and speed could be quite the devastating player.
Work in progress and I think this is the year, a lot of wrinkles are ironed out on this team.

And Dray can guard 1-5 positions because of how intelligent and how fast he can shuffle his feet while having likely one of the greatest core strengths in the league. Maybe SJ can become a poorman's Dray but I don't think he'll develop here with Mook and Leuer taking all forward minutes.
I'd rather develop Ellenson since he's the perfect PF size while being long enough to be defensively helpful.

I like how you just created a make believe quandary when in fact there isn't one. The only one that sees SJ as a 4 long-term is the select few of you on this forum. Stanley is 6'5 with a wingspan barely at 7'0, if that. That's not a PF.

Wow. Just wow. Pass along whatever you are smoking because that must be some good ****. Oh wait this is a joke. It has to be a joke. No way you are being serious. Not possible.
Barkley was able to succeed as a PF despite his height because he was an amazing athlete with skills. There are very few players that can succeed at the PF spot being so undersized. It's insanely rare and the common thread with all the players that pull it off is that they are amazing athletes. Stanley has below average NBA athleticism. In terms of athleticism Stanley has nothing on the likes of Blue Edwards and Clarence Weatherspoon and they were just solid players far from being "devastating" like you think Stanley could be.

So it looks like my innocent comment brought out some people itching for a fight over absolutely nothing.
Go on, get to it you two. drag me over the coals because as I'm "smoking something" anyway, I'll let you two go hog wild over a point, or comment only you care about.
People with no sense whatsoever coming out of the woodwork.
I'll just sit back and laugh my ass off.

Johnson grew up playing as a big I believe, Mater Dei started turning him into a wing player.

Itching for a fight? Drag you over the coals? Dude miss me with the woe is me bs. All I said is Stanley is not a 4. Is your comment not allowed to be debated or something? What am I missing?
