http://www.espn.com/blog/nba/post/_/id/25348/tuesdays-suns-news-as-expected-no-extension-for-alex-lenNo extension between Suns, Alex Len at deadline: Eight of Suns center Alex Len’s fellow 2013 first-round picks signed four-year contract extensions by Monday night’s deadline but Len has some proving left to do. As most teams did with 2013 first-rounders, the Suns explored the idea of an extension but ultimately did not sign Len to one. That allows Len to become a restricted free agent in July but the Suns maintain control of his future. They either can match another team’s offer sheet for him or exclusively negotiate a five-year contract rather than the four-year deals other team will be able to offer him.

Hopefully, we move him before we have to make the decision to match an offer from another team.

Thank you McD. Len should either start improving or we ship his sorry ass out.

Re: Alex Len
I'm afraid Alex Len may be asking for Miles Plumlee type money. Even though I'm sure the Suns don't want to let a guy they drafted top 5 to just walk as a FA after his contract ends, it would still be smarter to do that than overpaying him.
Len seems like the kind of player who will stop caring once he gets paid. He already plays like he hardly plays. He has questionable work ethic right now having barely improved since his rookie season so I can't imagine his work ethic or drive or motivation getting any better after getting a fat pay check.
Someone like Cole Alrich imo can provide everything that Len can and he costs about half of what Len's gonna be getting from some other team in the league.

Re: Alex Len
I've given up hope for Len as a Sun. Not saying he'll never amount to anything in the league but it's been three seasons and we've seen nothing but inconsistency and a general lack of basketball instincts. It seems clear we don't have the development staff to help him improve much further so a change in landscape and training staff might be good for him.
Let's build his value up and try and move him.

Hey at least you had some. Aside from I think twice in 3 years when he showed a couple flashes I've been down on him since day 1.
In the 2013 draft thread when Noel and McLemore were still there for #4 I posted:
"No Len... please god NO LEN!!!!"
Which was followed up just a few minutes later with:
"GOD ****ING DAMMIT!"
And capped off with:
"Len will be Robin Lopez 2.0."
A bunch of people in that thread were really high on him and saw a ton of potential, but I just never liked the pick. Obviously McLemore hasn't set the league on fire either, but man... what a crappy draft class in general.

I didn't want him either. I thought Noel was easily the best prospect in that group but once I heard about the knees, I lost all interest in him. I didn't really have a second favorite so my vote was for Bennett. Not because I thought he'd help us, but almost the opposite. That next year's draft class was looking stellar (at that time) so I figured Bennett had the best combination of up-side and low current value. I wanted the number 1 pick and didn't want to risk bringing in someone like Oladipo that might actually make us a little better that season.
But I have seen glimpses of Len that made me think he could turn into something special. Unfortunately, I've seen very few of those glimpses though since we signed Chandler. And I'm having a lot of trouble trying to reconcile what we've all seen from Alex with the positive reviews that kept coming out about him from the GM, coaching staff and teammates. I have a similar problem with Brandon Knight, how in the world did anyone think that guy deserved a spot in the all star game or had the kind of value worth giving up a prized draft pick for?

Re: Alex Len
Len is sloooooowly turning into Anthony "Magic" Randolph.
Drafted due to his HUGE potential. Year after year after year of "glimpses", but never reaching anywhere near that potential. I remember GS fans going postal when trade rumors were flush with a prime Amare being sent to the Bay for AR and a draft pick. Many GS fans also said that when the failed trade attempt happened, it was not due to the pick (which became Steph Curry), but was because of the young stud Anthony Randolph. He was supposed to top out as being BETTER than Amare ever was.
And here he is, 8 years after being drafted, coming off the bench for Real Madrid Baloncesto.
Len can show all the glimpses he wants. If you look hard enough, you can find these glimpse games from any player in the league. Consistency is what makes great players great. Being able to do that on not just any but EVERY given night. Len isnt consistent at all. Hell, he is the exact opposite. He might have 1 good game out of every 20, where the good players might have 1 bad game out of 20. And even then, he doesnt have a great game, its just a good game, one that would be average to any other talented starting C in the league. We get exstatic if he can end a game with 15 points and close to 10 rebounds, while most good starting C's AVERAGE THAT!
Time to send his ass packing once he has another one of these "good" games.
......and yeah, you will have the crowed that says, "You cant trade him now that his value is this low", but i say, yes you can! I mean c'mon, his value keeps getting lower and lower the more he plays for us. Honestly his value was at his highest before he was ever drafted when he was still a #4 pick in the draft, from the point we drafted him, the value just keep going lower and lower and lower. You need to know when to say enough is enough and walk away. Its sad when a 35 year old C is outplaying you and you cant even come close to wrestling away the starting spot from him.
Seriously, what the Suns need to do is make this season all about righting the ship, trading off anybody who is not involved in our future, and obtaining more young talent stuck behind vets and draft picks, and giving Booker/Bender/Chriss/Ulis all the minutes they can handle......
....and picking up Lance Stephenson.

I agree completely here and I also think Brandon Knight is in this same situation. Both these guys ruin any value they have/had the more they play...
Tucker may be in this group as well.

Re: Alex Len
As I watch Len around the basket, he seems to rush too much. He tries to make quick moves instead of strong moves. He can initiate quicker, but then not rush. Just focus on getting the ball in the hole.

I still think there's hope for Len and the Suns shouldn't give up on him just yet. IMO his problems are all mental, he has the talent.
BTW, FG% through first 3 season in the NBA:
Len .451
Cousins .448

If the needle hasn't moved by the end of the season, what do you guys think about Meyers Leonard? I'd wager he could be had cheaper than Alex Len because he's got a lot of competition in Portland. He can shoot the 3 and catch/finish the lobs. I don't know much about his defense.

He wasn't early in his career (9/54 from three in first 3 seasons). But even if you take into account threes and free throws their efficiency through 3 seasons was identical:
Len .501 TS%
Cousins .502 TS%

Re: Alex Len
Loved Alex's quotes in today's article by Coro. He wants to prove he's worth the money other bigs in his class have gotten, feels they're no better than him, wants to prove it. We're all on the same page here.
If Alex does make a leap this season, we're well positioned with RFA, our ability to give him 5 years, and his cap hold being less than an extension would have been (just in case we see a FA target in the summer).
BTW... does the Suns coaching staff monitor my posts? A few weeks ago I complained about Alex not challenging shooters sufficiently, reducing his block count. The very next game, I noticed he had started challenging more shots, especially in the mid-range. Most recently, I said Alex needed to stop taking the J and start just going strong inside. And apparently that's what the coaching staff told him to do before the Blazers game.

Then perhaps you could write them that:
1. Knight should take less long 2s and dribble less
2. Watson should play Bender much more
I can't do it, they don't seem to take my word seriously enough
