2016 season strategy talk

Post#1 » by deneem4 » Wed Nov 2, 2016 2:25 pm

Just a discussion from the community how we should operate with our current roster

Not a bash the coach thread
Bash eg thread
Or that other guy who should not be mentioned

Just looking at the glass half filled and wondering how we should gameplan going forward discussion

With that said....

We should have a free flow offense...alll our wings are great slashers...especially Porter...

But our current offense revolves around pnr...n sometimes find the open 3...

It maybe can function better if we focus on scoring options thru iso play...
Let 1 guy (preferably wall) look for the best way to score, while the wings attempt to get in good scoring position...
Wall isn't drawing defenses in enough...he can get to the rim at will but he has to sell contact and more importantly actually attempt...

Based on out personnel Morris should be the 2nd highest usage offensive players...simply because he's a capable passers-by answer capable iso player...
Once Beal handles comes consistent he should take that role...

Defensively we should start Mahinmi over gortat when he comes back...
Our bench needs to be more set orientated and gortat is a better offensive guy than Mahinmi...

We have to switch our attacksite up instead of putting them on the floor at the same time and running standardized plays for them...

Good offense keeps defenses guessing....
Pay your beals....or its lights out!!!
Bron, Bosh, Wade is like Mike, Hakeem, barkley...3 top 5 picks from same draft
mike, hakeem and Barkley on the same team!!!!

If I may use a feetball analogy, the Skins were most effective using play action passing. That was set up by running the ball. The Skins were below average in running the ball, but without doing that, they wouldn't be able to use the play action pass game. So that's why - as deneem says it's important to keep defenses guessing. You have to use a multi-faceted offense. Shooting 3's opens up the pnr for Wall to Gortat/Mahinmi - which should open up cutting lanes for others. It's incumbent on Wall to initiate all of these options, but it would be nice to see others occasionally taking over that initiation to again - keep defenses guessing and also to give Wall some relief.

Before ADK issues, AD would sometimes effectively play alongside Arenas by creating such a disruption, allowing Arenas to be the cutter or catch-and-shoot

I think that our best player needs to run. Which means you need to have your best defensive rebounders and those that are best able to cause TOs on the floor with him.

1. Defense first. If Wall & Beal are lazy and allowing ball penetration. Bench them, even if it costs us in short term. The only way we can compete is to be an elite defending team. As long as Wall/Beal shortchange us on that end, we'll fall short anyways.

2. End the mid-range bonanza. One of the most disturbing things I've seen thus far is the continuing love affair with the mid-range shot. Especially when it's the first option offensively. Nothing is worse to me than seeing no one else touch the rock as Wall comes down a jack a contested mid-range jumper. It should be our last option, not the first.

3. Beal's offensive role should be reduced to: spot up shooting from 3 and attacking the defense and getting to the rim when they chase him off the line.

4. Porter's offensive role should be increased. He would be the only player that should have the green light from mid-range. I would like to see Porter used in pick-n-roll or pick-n-pop scenarios. He's not a bad ball handler and generally makes good decisions. I always thought his skill set was more than just a 3&D guy. Maybe he gets more aggressive if he's used as a playmaker.

5. Have Satoransky & McClellan replace the Burke & Thornton backcourt. There's no upside continuing with what we have, especially defensively. Let Sato & McClellan learn via trial by fire. Even if they struggle, it won't be any worse than what we get from Burke & Thornton.

Theres literally probably 3 or 4 guys in the league that leads they're team offensively and defensively
LeBron(no kyrie isn't there yet)
Kawhi
Wall
PG to an extent(Turner is becoming a stud)
AD (leads his team in probably everything)

Every other team has a separate defensive and offensive leader..

If we're going to be an elite defensive team...we need consistent effort from everyone, wall can only do so much...
We don't have a great rebounder nor paint protecting big
(Until Mahinmi comes back)
Neither do we have an above capable wing defender
(Oubre might be the answer)
We don't even have a secondary playmaker
Those are key things good team have

So yea we live and die by wall but it's not like Porter Morris gortat, etc are stepping up on either side of the floor and making plays for the team it's rarely u can say anyone is trying offensively or defensively more than wall

Continue tanking. Which guarantees our version of a championship...finally getting rid of Ernie.

Thing is Arenas can shoot and the other problem is that AD'sK is quite literally better (or less bad) than Burke.

Yeah, it's hard for me to see Burke working out in much of anything. Maybe at the Burke Lake boat rental.

I havent seen G-Man in a while. Maybe Burke could wear the muscle suit and fire shirts into the crowd.

You know how this goes: if they need a win to clinch the playoffs, they'll lose; if they need a loss to hang on to the protected pick, they'll win; if you only have enough for one VC beer, the price went up.

1. Forget the fast paced offense. Our starters are not built for that (except for Wall).
But they can all do the pick and roll...Wall, Morris, Porter, Gortat. Need the coach to bring an innovative design that engages all these players at the same time...something more than what Billy Donaovan does with triple threat ball....something more than double ball screen play. I dont know what...I'm not smart enough to design it...but we cant have 4 PnR players and not take advantage of it. Beal should take a lesson from Rip Hamilton...run around, especially past screens, get open (help yourself to help Wall, or whoever find you!), find your spot up shot. Instead of copying the rest of the league, try something different.

2. On defense, guards - keep the person you are defending in front of you. Dont take a break on D. Crash the boards. Forwards, and Center - I would like to go old school NY Knicks style, and protect the paint...Make 'em pay when they drive into the paint....but alas, we dont have that kind of personnel. So a lot of help defense, and need people to actually talk/comunicate on defense.

So are we all in now that everyone is sipping the Kool-Aid??? Are there not any 10-Day contracts we can nab for a S4 or more shooting?
