I'm on the fence re Kamasi Washington - when I heard about him and read descriptions of his music I thought I'd love him, but listening to his stuff I was a bit underwhelmed. I felt like it was a little too disjointed and abstract, but I'm gonna listen again with a fresh mind and see how it goes.

Snidely, I'm listening right now to that Carlos Henriquez album you recommended a while back, it's definitely staying in my rotation of good tunes.

you should listen to it on one of your bicycle excursions, the music rises and falls like the Latvian countryside :D

haha, that's a great idea. only problem is that we're seeing our first snow in Latvia right now and I won't go on one until May probably. so I'll probably give the album a listen before that.

Since nobody posted an album yesterday, I'll do a short one that is a significant departure from the genres I normally listen to:

Image

Causa by Vitalism

I am told this genre is progressive metal. It's pretty short, only four tracks but it is intense and extremely technically impressive. A good description of the album I found:

Enter Vitalism, a Brazilian four-piece shredding their way through their listeners’ ears with their new EP Causa. Vitalism’s technical, chaotic, yet eloquent and melodic sound is sure to impress even the most stubborn of listeners. With song elements reflecting both tropical, chill, happy CHON and technical, dissonant The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza, Vitalism have created something that melds the darkest and lightest of progressive metal into one Frankenstein-esque piece of instrumental music.

Lots of layers to this and I love the way they are in and out of rhythms - the drums are extremely impressive. Very cool sounding album, glad I stumbled upon it.

The important thing to understand here is if your lady friend cannot cook a proper bowl of grits, you should probably look elsewhere or learn to cook them yourself. However, writing songs about cooking your own grits just doesn't have the same appeal.

"I cook my own grits;
in a crock pot;
using lots of butter;
serve it red hot"

you know, just spit-balling here...

for some reason rappers love women that can cook breakfast and roll weed. its been referenced in more than a few songs. that said if she cant cook good grits she is not the right one.

of course, Sean Price had to be the exception to this rule

"I love it when my bitch cook, come home
To a hot meal, it's not real, the bitch can't cook"

^much better.

One of my main beefs with this genre of music is the consistent over-drumming. I rarely like drums to be in your face with unnecessary fills. I like my drums to be more subtle. You can still shred a drum beat but do it in a way that doesn't overpower the music. My two cents.
