There are a lot of missed opportunities, but I just dont see Dwight as one of them. His case is nuanced as his personality, injury history, and connection to ATL make that a real stretch.
He signed with ATL (his hometown which is also close to his home in Florida and a contender in the East) for 3/70M (23.5M per). We would have had to offer around 25-26M per to pull him away...minimum. So 3/78M for a 30 y/o Center with a history of back problems, acts like drama queen and shy's away from confrontation by being passive aggressive.
We would have had to have a Gortat trade in place because there is no way that situation would work. Then, we would of needed to sign a high level backup as we would have gone from an iron man in Gortat to a roll of the dice in Howard.
Also, Howard had his amazing visit with the Hawks on July 1 and signed the next day. We met with Horford in ATL on July 2nd and he didnt make his final decision until late that night.

Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XXXI
I think Gortat and Burke to Phoenix for Chandler and John Jenkins makes sense.
http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=zx5ndkc
Even better would be to include Jason Smith and a second rounder for PJ Tucker.
Alex Len needs to eventually start. Gortat would be a better mentor than Chandler, who is strictly a defender and a rebounder.
Chandler would probably play harder for the Wizards than Gortat at this time. He would be extremely well suited to come off the bench for Mahinmi, who is making starter money.

Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XXXI
Trading Gortat would be the greatest stupidity... He is our player with best efficiency/minute after Wall. The only one to be over 0,5eff/min....
Porter, Gortat and Wall are the only players to be underpaid in this team for this year. Maybe Morris too....
We can say our 5 is good. We need Beal to make shoots because he is overpaid at this moment...
The main problem is our second unit! Only 5 games were played but we can see there is a big problem. Total efficiency of second unit is 93 in 387 minutes... It is under 0,25!!! And we can't say it is a good defensive unit!
The second unit is so bad that even Michael Jordan at his best age can't help us to make the playoffs!
They will destroy all hopes to win if it continues even if starting 5 take the lead.... So trading Gortat for Chandler who is 4 years older would be a very bad decision for next years.
Most of second players unit are new players to the team so there is a hope they will do better later. But I am not very optimistic. If there is something to change, i suggest to start by replacing all the second unit.

Chandler has been in the NBA a lot longer, but he's only sixteen months (roughly a year-and---half) older. October 1982 to February 1984 isn't much difference in age.
You could be right about the rest, but my thoughts are that Chandler can back up Mahinmi; who will IMO be starting. I don't see Gortat being happy playing less minutes.

Why would Gortat not start? When Mahinmi is healthy he can anchor the second unit and play some minutes with the starters. But Gortat is still more efficient player who tends to start seasons slower. It was exactly the same year ago - many wrote him off at the beginning and by December he was a player of the week once + noted the highest efficiency numbers in our team. Gortat is still leading the team in rebounding (btw. some posters blame him for his rebounding inability - he had over 30% of all Zards defensive rebounds this first 5 games. Do you expect Mahinmi to grab 15/17 rpg?!), his advanced numbers look very similar to what he performed last year, and basically every single year of his career. Of course he ain't no Mutombo but damn he is not the one responsible for this team's poor performance. In fact, Wall-Beal-Porter-Morris-Gortat starting unit seems to be playoff team, skill-wise. Mahinmi will help second unit AND play some minutes whenever defense is needed. But he is very raw offensively, he shoots FT poorly, fouls a lot ... The Gortat/Mahinmi duo can be great if used correctly, however this team needs SHOOTERS. Burke was terrible. Nicholson is poor. Smith is awful. Thornton is meh. Beal is underperforming.

Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XXXI
I am not against trading Ian Mahinmi for something good at PF/C and someone who can play 30 minutes so he can substitute Morris and Gortat from the bench... But he need to be solid at both positions.
And because we have not much to trade, I will try to add something like Martell Webster to make some shoot
But this saison may be a very long for us... If we want to win some game we need to make Wall, Beal, Porter, Morris, Gortat and maybe Ian play very very long minutes... And with injury risks of Wall and Beal (and now Ian) it is not a great idea...

Anybody should be available for a trade -- it's just a matter of what you're getting back.
People often think that building a good team is like doing a puzzle, where you need just the right pieces and to fit them together right. It's not. It's like stacking chips. The better players you have the better your team, period. Just add up how good they are. If you have 3 players who are very good at a position you are able to trade -- you have a player to trade whom other teams will want and for whom they'll give up a player you want at another position.
All the rest of it -- the "great" coach, "chemistry," etc. -- is of relatively minor importance. Not that it can't ever come into play, but it's the least of your worries, and especially if your team is full of guys who just aren't very good. Like ours.

Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XXXI
Mahinmi has value, but to salvage the season the Wizards might be better served with him in the starting unit and Gortat anchoring that awful awful bench.
That basically leaves Oubre and any number of picks as the only tradeable assets, and I really doubt that this will net Washington what they desperately need.
A productive second unit player at the wing or power forward.
This situation is hopeless.

What if Brooks just pulled Gortat in the mid to late 1st for Mahinmi and Wall for Sato in the late 1st. Then Wall/Gortat could come back in the early/mid 2nd... so something like
Start:
Wall
Beal
Otto
Morris
Gortat
Mid to late 1st:
Sato
Beal
Otto
Morris
Mahinmi
Early to mid 2nd:
Wall
Thornton
Oubre
Nicholson
Gortat
Etc.
This allows Sato and Mahinmi to play their High IQ game not force the offense as Beal, Otto, and Morris can score. This helps Oubre as well

Gortat and burke for snell and Monroe....
Say what you want about Monroe but he can be a go to scoring option...
Once Mahinmi comes back let him start while Monroe and sato bully 2nd units...
Playoffs easy

Leonsis, traded anything and everything including picks outside of john wall to the get demarcus cousins.
Build your team w/5 shooters using P. Pierce Form deeply bent hips and lower back arch at same time b4 rising into shot. Elbow never pointing to the ground! Good teams have an engine player that shoot volume (2000 full season) at 50 percent.Large Hands

I assume Burke and Snell are in this trade for... what? Why are they in the trade? They have no use for Burke (who would?), and we have no use for Snell (who would?).
So, really it's Gortat straight up for Monroe? That's what you really want?
No thanks. Gortat is the better player. But... one good thing still might come out of the trade for us. Monroe can play the 4, so we could start him next to Mahinmi and move Morris to the backup PF where his production level wouldn't hurt us so much.
If all 3 of them could handle 30+ minutes a night, with Monroe playing C for part of the time Gortat is on the bench, that would put Nicholson and Smith out of the rotation. We'd win a few more games. Not sure we'd manage to sneak in w/ the #8 playoff spot, but maybe, & at least we'd be better than at present.
Still, not going to happen. We could have gotten Monroe in the off season and given up less.

We had our chance to let him walk. I took a bunch of crap last season when I was saying to let him walk. Clearly that would have been much better than paying big money for a mediocre, injury prone player.

Interesting Wall-to-Denver deal. Go all the way to the bottom for this deal:
There have been absolutely no indications Wall can be had, but it’s at least plausible he could become available. Just to toss an idea out there: Maybe Mudiay, Nurkic, and both 2017 draft picks would be enticing for Washington. The Wiz would still have Otto Porter and Bradley Beal, with their own first-round pick, two high-to-mid first-rounders in a deep draft, and tons of young talent....
