While I would be more then intrigued to see Drummond try underhand cause I'm just desperate at this point for him to get better. I refuse to believe he has never sat and tried it before. If he knows he shoots them better that way then I think he might be willing to do it at some point to stay in the court but there is a possibility he just doesn't.

If we're talking physical profile as a limitation, then why is Boban shooting like Nash on his FTs in comparison to Dre? Hell, even far bigger centers in the past like Shaq or HOF Yao Ming shot far better than Dre did while having much more of a physical stature than Dre ever had.

I can almost guarantee it's his mechanics first and foremost. Shooting 60-70% in practice is still pretty bad for a pro player and that only is likely exacerbated with the fact that his shooting coaches are trying to fix tiny issues that probably have nothing to do with overall shooting. Aka overanalyzing his shot to what is his Frankenstein's monster of a shot now.

For Christ's sakes, he's missing his FTs to the left and right of center and sometimes straight up airballs it.

I really doubt the VR from STRIVR works, the tech isn't nearly there yet to accurately trace a FT form yet. It's gotten exponentially better for precise movements, but for FTs it's really not.

That is true, he is missing them in a way the ball is so far off that There's no way there isn't a mechanical issue as well. Maybe the underhand would help him just for the simple fact of holding the ball on each side getting better control of the trajectory of it.

so it's only nine games into the season (he has attempted a free throw in eight games) but andre is shooting 55% on the year and his free throws look so much better. he's getting soft bounces off the rim, it's a lot more consistently in the middle and overall looks more consistent.

from highest % to lowest, here are his results:

3/3
2/2
4/6
7/11
3/5
4/8
2/6
1/6

that's 2/8 games where he shot below 50%, he had about 50 games like that last year.

also, it's only four games but since his 1/6 game against new york he has shot 68% from the line. if you take away his two games without missess (2/2 and 3/3) and his two worst games (1/6, 2/6) then he has shot 60% (18/30).

it's tough to guess what he'll end up with this year but i don't think it crazy to see him end up in the 55-60% range. i'm really happy for andre, he clearly put a ton of work in and should do wonders for his confidence. obviously it'll help the team a ton too.

assuming he keeps up this 50+% pace i just hope he realizes that this wasn't a one-offseason fix, it'll likely be a career-long thing he has to work hard on. guys like shaq, dwight, etc. had years where they shot pretty well and then reverted back to old form. shaq shot a career-high 62% one year and then followed that with a four-year stretch where he shot 47%. dwight had a year where he shot 67% despite shooting below 60% the rest of his career.

It's obvious that he's put in a lot of work. I think we saw it last year that he kept trying to adjust and didn't keep faith in his form. This season, his form is consistent. Even when he misses, he goes back out and starts his motion all over again. This consistency is key. This is what's going to see that number rise. I thought 50% on the season would be ideal, but if he stays this consistent all season long, 60% would not be out of reach. The more he sees the ball go in, the more confidence he has to stick with it. Kudos to the Pistons for sticking by him.

AD shooting FTs at the current rate is a dominant player. We should expect him to become more assertive if he loses his fear of going to the line.

yup, he is well on his way to solving the free throw issues. Now he just needs to learn how to handle double teams...

We're seeing much less hack-a-Dre... extra minutes translates to improving numbers... now he needs to focus on reducing his foul rate.
