Hawks Turnovers becoming an issue

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Mon Nov 14, 2016 6:56 pm

The team, with the addition of Dwight Howard, has turned their rebounding weakness into a bonafide strength.

Now, our most glaring vulnerability appears to be turnovers and points scored off of them.

Turnovers

These are beginning to become a little concerning. The Hawks coughed the ball up 24 times last night leading to 38 Chicago points. If they don’t address this, these points off turnovers will be to this season as the offensive rebounds and second chance points were to last season. The Hawks are averaging 18 turnovers per contest, only the Denver Nuggets at 18.3 average more turnovers in the league.

You turn the ball over 24 times and you’ll do very well to win that game. Last season teams who coughed the ball up 24 or more times went 9-29.

Is this to be expected with such inexperienced PGs?

Is it a concern long-term?

How can we shore these up outside of simply being 'more careful'?

Questions? Concerns? Predictions?

Korver mentions the turnover issue after the Philly game Saturday evening:

THe following night against Philly, yhey started off the game with 9 turnovers in the 1ST QUARTER :o , SMH.
However they corrected that and only had 7 turnovers the rest of the game to finish with only 16.
Hopefully they understand they have to value the ball. The unforced turnovers are killer.

With a complete change at PG and a new scoring option on offense I could see why Turnovers is an issue. If Dwight gets touches he's not adept at holding the ball and I think Schroeder is carrying more of a load than he had last season hence the turnovers. It may get better later in the season but if they go against athletic wings in the playoffs(Chicago, Cleveland, maybe Boston) they can get killed by this.

I think it's just a matter of needing time to gel.

Dennis is the full time starter for the first time ever. Dwight is new to the system, a system that takes time to fully learn. Millsap is playing alongside a C that's completely different from the one he just spent 3 years playing with.

If the turnover problem is still prevalent in mid-December then it'll be eye opening.

After the Heat Win:

Chris Vivlamore wrote:If there is an issue with the Hawks early in the season, it’s turnovers. The Hawks committed seven first-quarter turnovers, including five in the first eight minutes. They went to half time with only 10 turnovers. However, they ended the game with 21 turnovers that led to 20 Heat points.
