Redrafting the 2015 Draft Top 10

Post#1 » by TTP » Wed Nov 16, 2016 5:21 pm

I posted about this on my team specific forum but I'm curious what a more neutral consensus looks like knowing what we know now about the 2015 draft class. If the 2015 draft was re-drafted right now, who would be your top 10? Mine would probably look like:

1. KAT
2. Porzingis
3. Russell
4. Booker
5. Turner
6. RHJ
7. Winslow
8. Richardson
9. Powell
10. WCS

It might look strange to include a couple of second rounders and leave several high lottery picks out but we've seen all of these guys experience some amount of success in their first year in the NBA. I'm expecting some disbelief that I didn't include Okafor or Mudiay. However, a year of production (or lack thereof) in the NBA is a big deal. The further we get from the draft, the less pre-draft expectations mean, and both of those guys have been significant disappointments thus far. That said, there are several that didn't make my top 10 that could certainly be there with significant improvement this season. Another big unknown that I like is Delon Wright, who has been buried on a very deep Raptors team and has been injured this year as well. He's been good in a small sample and a lot of models liked him as a prospect. I'd like to see what he can do in a different situation.

It's still early but I'd redraft like this,

MIN - KAT, nothing to say there, although the way they are developing him is concerning
LA - Porzingis, easily the 2nd best prospect even if Russell's highest end could be on par, Randle-KP duo is a giant mismatch
PHI - Booker, I like DAR but Booker is a better shooter with similar creation ability and clearly a better athlete albeit not as long
NY - Turner, easy one here, Myles is not KP on offense, not as fluid but can be a better defender down the road
ORL - Russell, that team needs badly an offensive engine to power their other pieces
SAC - Winslow, not even an argument in my mind, he should've been the guy for them back then, still is

Until then it's easy, after it becomes a cluster, Richardson, Powell, Anderson, Nance, heck even Kaminsky at times, have looked good, but they are 3 years older than guys like Mudiay, Johnson, RHJ, Hezonja, or Lyles, than even if they are flawed guys could end up been better in the long run.

Yeah I was ignoring team fits but did not specify in the OP. I should have asked who your top 10 would be.

Thread is 3-4 years too early at minimum. The players I was high on then have not changed but Booker stands out as a guy that I miss the mark on.

Too early for being fairly certain about players, but certainly not too early for sharing one's opinions! One year of NBA play is pretty significant, especially when you're judging a lot of players off of one year of college play. It's not too different from how high school prospects can fluctuate greatly after a year of college (see Skal, James Michael McAdoo, Cliff Alexander, etc).

While I'm a homer, Powell looks like a stud to me. I'd take him over RHJ, Winslow, Richardson

Powell is 3 years older than Winslow and 2 years older than RHJ. Winslow and RHJ are already better defenders than Powell, and you honestly think in 3 years Winslow wont be where Powell is right now? Winslow right now at 20 is better than Powell is at 23. The only thing Powell does better is shoot the 3.

Are people overating Winslow's poor shooting or is he always going to be somone that fails to find offense? I also don't see Powell in the top ten, Rozier is shooting at the same efficiency yet is a better passer, rebounder, and defender. Neither will go in the top ten unless they do it over a longer span. The top ten would most likely remain pretty similar player wise with maybe one or two guys like Booker and Turner jumping in. Even with a bad start to the season though I couldn't see Okafor dropping out of the top ten, there is still a lot of upside.

I don't believe we'll ever see Winslow shoot over 40% from three, he's been a pretty inefficient outside shooter to start his career. Overall he will be a better player though, I just don't see the high upside everyone else does.

1. Zings
2. KAT
3. Turner
4. Booker
5. Russell
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and say:“Hey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.”

Towns
Porzingis
Russell
Turner
Winslow
Okafor(last two is pretty interchangable.

By the way if everything else is same, that Embiid-Simmons-Russell trio would be pretty special with Russell and Simmons being friends and all.

Booker over okafor at least. Winslow too but I can see based on needs where you could choose him. Okafor is just a very poor man's Jefferson.

We recently analysed the 2015 NBA Draft and re-drafted the lottery.

https://thefourpointplayaus.wordpress.com/2017/02/06/2015-nba-re-draft-late-lottery-luck/

Question - is a draftees success purely based on talent? Or does where they get drafted impact success just as much?
