Impact of Coaching Changes

Post#1 » by NuggetsWY » Sun Sep 4, 2016 7:58 pm

What impact will the coaching changes have?
I'm thinking the loss of Fleming will be the biggest hit. Finch will bring in a new offense and that always seems to slow down teams early in the year, especially young teams.

To be real honest our offense was not particularly all that great last year, so maybe a better offense that takes advantage of the altitude will not be a bad thing.

Well, maybe, truth is, I wasn't too concerned about it last year with a rookie PF struggling and old guys having "worst seasons" and other young players. But Denver has been talking about "more 3s" and Finch was involved in Houston's "Three or Slam" philosophy. I think his approach fits the modern NBA and I think the team we are building is better suited for that. Look at our new talent, they can all shoot 3s: Chandler, Murray, Beasley, Hernangomez. Add them to Harris, Barton, Gallinari, Jokic (all of whom hopefully improve) and the Nuggets should be a pretty good 3pt shooting team. Smooth offense? Might take another year or two.

I remember when NBA teams started adding a third coach to their staffs and there was all kinds of talk about "Why would any team need three coaches?" and stuff like that. It made me chuckle to read about the Nuggets coaches in the following article. It's actually a pretty good article and I am a firm believer that a team that has more coaches can help players more with specialization and so forth - especially since there are no limits to how much the owners can spend on coaches. I think I like the team Malone has assembled in his second year.

Never forget Steve Hess, even though hes only a strength and conditioning coach, i feel he embodies what this team is really all about and all the players love him. He helped Juka shed 30 lbs this off season and I personally think without him the Nuggets would be visibly worse.

He also seems to be a "Life coach"

I have to hand it to you NuggetsWY you called the early offensive struggles with the change in assistant coaches, I must say our offense so far this year sucks.

Thanks for that. I'm one of those stat geek types. New head coaches or massive assistant coach changes seldom work well in their first year. But that's OK, if we are developing our young players. I was hoping I was wrong, but our problem this year is basically the same as last year. The players all have one favorite position: spectator. On both offense and defense. On offense the Nuggets just don't have great one-on-one iso players. Gallinari and Chandler and Barton and Murray are fair but when the games on the line and the other team looks at our lineup, I just don't think they are afraid. On defense, who are our lock-down defenders? Nurkic who seldom plays late in the game; Chandler and Harris and that's really it. Again, I just don't think we strike fear in the hearts of our opponents.
