Is there hope? Is the 62% from the field over the last five games a mirage? Everytime I watch a highlight video of him I can't help but think he has all the tools to be a successful player in today's game.

There is hope. All last year he played as a spot up shooter. Now that he has turned into a driving playmaker that can knock down smart shots he is like a whole different player. Hell, his defense is only looking meh rather than the abomination it has been. He could be a valuable rotation player if he keeps this up.

His tools were always there, it was more of a mental issue. Now he finally seems confident and it shows. Give credit to him, he knew that he had to work on his mental game and decided to see a sports psychologist. It seems to pay off. Sample size is still small though...

Talent was never the problem with Nik. At least offensively, he is very talented.

Really think that Stauskas benefited from having his first quiet off season. Work with the psychologist is paying off and he looks stronger than ever which helps his driving game. Getting some "easy" buckets at the rim is the basis for his shooting confidence. Keep improving Stauskas (and Hollis).

Still don't trust the guy in the guts of a game. He just seems soft to me.

Anyone notice how often he gets past his first defender so easily with his pump fake or the little jab? Dude is dangerous on offense.

Think he needs to spend some time tightening up his handle and becoming stronger with the ball.

I wonder how much it will cost to extend him. Hopefully we could lock him in at a reasonable rate like $8M/yr. Dude currently has a .642 TS% which is crazy good. Defense is improved too.

Quick question. Was out so I couldn't catch the game but I noticed he put up another decent statline tonight. Only thing that is weird is his -21 (worst on the team tonight). Is that circumstance or is he **** the bed on defence?

Nik is slowly starting to build some momentum. If he can keep this up for the rest of the year his career would be off of life support and he would be back to a legitimate third guard type of potential. He has been a quiet bright spot for this team recently.

Eh circumstances definitely played their part but there was also a stretch where Wiggins took nik to task with his post up game. Wiggins has looked unstoppable.

He looks like Jah. On offense they look like fluid athletes but on defense they look like there running in mud.

wow. remember when the line was "Even with Nik not working out, Sam still robbed the Kings blind on that deal."? now suddenly he's looking like the very guy the Kings were hoping they drafted (and who Sam tried to trade up for with that 2nd pick that turned into Saric and another pick). right now i appreciate Brian's steady caution, but Hinkie is the gift that keeps on giving.

I have generally liked Niks defense this year but yes againt Wiggins he was awful.

Can't expect him to hold up in the post against a scoring SF. I don't knock him for trying

He's grading as the third worst defensive SG in the NBA right now (ahead of only Booker and Klay). I don't think he'll ever be a positive on that end but if he can keep up these offensive contributions, he'll have a bench role.

I think another jump in his strength (which I think has been apparent this year) and effort and awareness by the time he really grows into his body at say 26 will put him at a not negative defender. Never will be a lock down but he has the potential to be top 5 offensive SG and maybe top 25 on D?

The accelerated development phase for the average NBA player tends to end roughly age 23. Players tend to still improve marginally until around 27-28 but it's unrealistic to expect massive gains - obviously it's possible for players, just not common.

Image

This is Stauskas' third year in the league and has graded pretty similarly in each of those years (DRPM -2.45 in 2014-15, -2.44 in 2015-16, -2.35 this season). He's very marginally better this year but has actually decreased in position among SGs. He's probably a massive underdog to ever be a top 40 defender among SGs (roughly league average), much less top 25.

It's also probably just as ridiculous to expect him to get anywhere near top 5 offensive SG given that he's shooting at unsustainable levels in a small sample right now and he's still only grading as 32nd best offensively.
