Do we need a better Shooting Guard?

Post#1 » by MagicStarwipe » Tue Nov 22, 2016 11:44 pm

Considering Fournier is a one dimensional selfish prick and Mario can't get on the court, do we need a better SG? Discuss.

I'd like one that plays like he gives a **** and not like he just signed a massive dea and can relax now.

What? it's only fair. Fournier has not played well this season and looks like he has trouble fitting into a team system. Certainly does not seem like a really good quality starting caliber SG considering he can't defend and can't do anything on offense but shoot. He's putrid off the dribble. I think we could do with an upgrade at this position.

Turnabout is fair play.

Let's be real - if we want to be title contenders, we're going to need a better everything.

But if we want to be borderline-8th-seed-sweep-material, then meh, I think we're doing alright.

We do need a better back-up SG, though. I mean one that actually plays. *cough*

I just wish we were an American League team so we could move him to DH.

We had a good one and gave him away in a completely short sighted decision, after the new year he played really well and is starting to settle on nicely with his new team. Oh and he actually tries on defense, something our present starting 2 doesn't do.

I think if you put McGee back then, he would get those blocks just as easily as Russell did. Russell's athleticism was well ahead of the players of his time, and that's about it.

I really like Dipo and if the money were equal I would have preferred to keep him but don't talk as if he didn't have a lot of knucklehead plays and even entire games just like Fournier.

Ibaka is starting to play very well for us. I would rather have Fournier + Ibaka than Dipo.

Sure. Every player on the team could use a better player on the team. We have a team of 2nd fiddles.

Unless something significantly better comes along i wouldn't be expecting much change.

Replace Fournier with Harden and our team is a different beast. The team doesn't change unless you bring in a dynamic playmaker at any position. Id say outside of Ibaka id be open to anything.

I think our best option is to try to propel the entire group into the playoffs, install the system, coaching, and habits then make a move next year trade deadline or summer 2018 to get significantly better while cashing in on our culture and foundation which we can use to quickly turn around and bring everyone up to speed much faster. Minimal roster turnover.

I prefer the more selective Fournier we had last year as it translated to better scoring efficiency and less turnovers. This season he is forcing more shots and forcing more passes. I'm guessing Vogel wants him playing the way he is though. Just like he wants Gordon exploring jumpers, Elf taking 3s, Ibaka/Biyombo getting touches in the post, etc. He wants these guys to step out of their comfort zone and improve. We aren't all-in on winning... we're developing a good portion of the team, and like it or not that includes Fournier. Hopefully Vogel knows what he's doing...

It's a fair question.

If the Fournier we have seen thus far ends up being the Fournier we see all season, then yes, we definitely need a new SG. But if this turns out to be a funk that he busts out of, and he goes on to be a slight improvement on the player he was last year, then I think that would be something that we could live with.

A similar statement can be made about Vooch. I think their situation is different from Payton and Gordon, who need to achieve a new level that they have never previously demonstrated over the course a season.

Jeff Green, on the other hand, seems to be an all-around dumpster fire beyond hope.

I get the feeling you *might* be starting with a preconceived notion of the answer you would like to see.

Not at all sure I agree with either premise, yet.

He's averaging 17 a game, shooting 36% from 3 and his FG% is 42. We know he can shoot 40% from 3 and usually has a higher field goal %, so he looks like a guy who can average 18 ppg if he has more scoring around him to open up more space.

Currently he is forcing too much and turning the ball over at the highest rate of his career. Not too worried about that. We don't really have an alpha scorer yet, so he's just trying to fill that role. We get the right guy at SF and I think Evan's numbers improve.

No, we don't need a better SG.

The bigger question is *IF* we ever get an all star caliber SG or any player for that matter at that level, will Fournier's ego allow him to take a back seat or will he consider himself the #1 option?

I suppose the same thing is happening with Vuc now.... they both are content being #1 scoring options on a losing team instead of a role player on a winning one. Both are gutless losers and we are stuck with them until Hennigan is fired and the new GM cleans up the mess.

Basically my point is I don't trust Hennigan's process and worry that he is covering up one mistake with exponentially larger ones. So just keep everyone for now until he is fired.
