It was a win-win in my view. He was going to leave regardless because we were clearly not keen on keeping that ship going and he wasn't going to play for peanuts on a sinking ship. So he reached out to Sarver and got a deal done where he can go to where he wants to go and we get some great picks from the deal, which unfortunately turned into Knight. The only thing I disagreed with was him going to the Lakers. Had he went to any team other than LA or San An, I'd be more than fine with it.

I remember we had this question a while back, it was aimed at 'outsiders' from Az.

So here's my reasoning from that post:

TASTIC wrote:Everyone in NZ was a Bulls/Lakers/Hornets fan and those were basically the only three teams on TV until Shaq and Penny hit the scene, then Kemp and Payton as well. The Bulls were everyone's favourite's and they were obviously playing the Suns and that's when I remember watching a game every week with my dad. He was a Bird fan but also liked Barkley, so I went with Barkley and the Suns because they were the underdogs.

About a year later my mum went to Australia for a reunion and when she came back she'd gotten me a Charles Barkley vs Godzilla Nike tee, which I wore to DEATH.

Image

Then when I started playing basketball they bought me some Converse React Kevin Johnson's...which were also worn into the ground.

Image

I actually won a half-time shootout comp at the local team's game, but I was only 9 and it was this MASSIVE LA Lakers Spalding jacket. They moved the mats forward (essentially 5x car mats with 1-2-3 painted on them, scattered inside the 3pt line) where you stood and shot on them, getting as many as you could in 60sec. Because I was so small they brought them all forward to just around the key and I buried about 12pts in the first 30sec, then they moved them back! Still won though and still...unfortunately...have that jacket, though I never wore it. Was always too big for me then by the time I fit it, I naturally hated the Lakers :D I rocked my hornets cap, Godzilla tee and KJ shoes though, was awesome having like 5000 people cheer me on, mum has the video somewhere.

My favourite players through this time were Barkley, Majerle, KJ, Penny Hardaway, Kemp, Augmon, Hakeem and LJ. When Penny did the S&T to the Suns, that sealed it.

Two trips to Phoenix, about a dozen games and the rest is history :)

I had the white KJs, man they were cool.

Also literally everyone I meet/have met round the world knows I'm a Suns fan. Either from talking to them incessantly or from wearing Suns tees or a few different Suns jerseys.

It's crazy - a guy I work with here has a younger cousin who applied to study at Arizona and he got in. And he went there purely because he's a Suns fan, I was/am very jealous. So if you see a 19yr old Maori dude walking round wide-eyed, I work with his cousin haha.

My Cubbies won this season. I don't want to wait another 60yr for the Suns to win a damn title!

I was probably too young to really consider myself a true fan, so I'd say I really got into the Suns on my own during the Backcourt 2000 period. We were really fun to watch when healthy, and I loved Penny and Kidd. I remember being heartbroken when we traded Kidd after the domestic abuse incident, he was my favorite player at the time and I was so disappointed in the entire situation.

My peak fandom was definitely the return of the prodigal Sun, Steve Nash. That was when I was starting to play basketball seriously in the AAU and school ball scene, and I basically idolized him and tried to emulate his game on the court, so naturally I watched a ton of Suns basketball and Steve Nash mixtapes when Youtube came about. I abstained from the Suns during the 2012-2013 season because I was heartbroken (again) that we traded him, especially to the team I was taught to fiercely hate my entire life. Then, I remember tuning into the draft after that season, and I was insanely excited because Ben McLemore AND Nerlens Noel somehow both dropped to us at #5. I thought we could do no wrong picking between those two, until Stern walked out and announced we had taken Alex freaking Len from Maryland over my 2 favorite prospects of the year, after which I went on a Twitter rant that I still completely stand by.

BMac would have been good ANYWHERE but the place prospects go to never develop and eventually leave for greener pastures: Sacramento. Yes, I'm still mad.

You probably know this information already, but just to be clear, Nash left the Suns as a free agent and basically became a Laker by choice. He then went to Robert Sarver and personally requested the sign-and-trade to Los Angeles in order to to make the cap numbers work and receive the "market value" contract that he wanted. Reluctantly, Sarver agreed to facilitate Nash's desire.

For the record, I am not blaming Nash—I thought that he cut a great deal for himself. But he and the Suns just suffered a business disagreement that caused him to depart. The Suns made a wise business decision, and Nash—like most athletes (or people in general)—could not see matters objectively. But of course, seeing matters objectively is not the goal of a free agent, either.

As for Noel and McLemore, I doubt that Phoenix would be better off today with either one of them. Cousins has developed in Sacramento, and McLemore was a "shooter" who has not shot that ball all that well in the NBA. The atmosphere around him surely has not helped, but his prospect stock probably happened to be grossly inflated. When trying to assess players after only one year of college basketball, this kind of misjudgment will occur.

Yeah I know, but it just felt wrong letting him go to the Lakers, regardless of how it happened or if we got something out of it in the end. I don't really blame him or the Suns, it just sucked a lot seeing your favorite player ever go to your least favorite team. Plus I still get the "Lakers Legend Steve Nash" jokes from some of my friends that are Lakers fans lol.

Boogie is the only guy in recent history that the Kings drafted and haven't **** up, and in my mind he's the exception, not the rule. Maybe it's because I loved his story and his game at Kansas, but I'm not ready to give up on McLemore. His biggest problem is that he never developed the ball handling skills to be a threat outside of catching and shooting. Part of that is probably his fault, but blame also has to be laid on the Kings considering their recent struggles with developing prospects. He'll never be an All Star, and probably wouldn't have been regardless of where he landed, but he is the pretty much exact same player that I saw in college and it's the franchises job to make sure their players don't stagnate. I doubt we'd be competing in the playoffs or anything right now if we took him though, that's for sure.

As far as Noel, I could see us being in a better position if we'd taken him over Len than we are now. I doubt our 2013-2014 season would be any different assuming we let Noel take the year off like the 6ers did, considering Len barely got minutes at the time anyways and was dealing with his own injuries, but to me Noel as a rookie offers more of what this team needs than Len does at this point in time. He's a very high impact defensive player, he doesn't require a bunch of touches in the post or anything like that to be valuable, and he runs the floor better than Len. His strong rookie year could have effected the direction the FO took going into last season a lot, whether it's signing Chandler, obtaining LMA, etc etc. Obviously it's all hypothetical, and I still doubt we'd be playoff contenders or anything, but I think we'd be better off in the sense that we'd have a more talented young core on the team with him than Len.

I was even fine with him going to the Lakers—shocked at first, but not upset. On paper, the opportunity seemed ideal for him.

Of course, the Suns were willing to bring him back for a decent contract: two years at around $6M per season (remember, by 2012 standards). But, really, athletes older than thirty-five should almost never be signed to multiyear contracts, and offering three years at major money to a thirty-eight year old just did not constitute a good business decision.

Personally, I thought that Phoenix should have traded Nash before he reached free agency, anyway.

In terms of talent, I would take Noel over Len, but he has not played this season and he of course did not play as a rookie, so injuries constitute a major concern. I do not believe that his '14-'15 season would have changed that much for the Suns, and Phoenix probably would not have been quite as good in '13-'14 without drafting Len, even if his contributions to that team proved modest at best.

If McLemore really has not progressed at all, that problem speaks more to him than the Kings. That situation may well have held him back to some extent, but not to this extent. Overall, I would rather have Len than him, especially given Booker's presence.

Great post. I was a HUGE McLemore fan too. I was even tweeting Coro saying "if McLemore drops we won't pass him up will we?" I think he tweeted back saying "No, I think the Suns would be ecstatic." I think most on this board at the time were higher on Noel, but both had quite a few fans...maybe a couple wanted Len. Going back to that draft thread is funny to read.

The Suns started the season 11-10 that year; this win gave Phoenix a 14-4 record since the 11-10 start. Three games later, Phoenix would blow out the "Showtime" Lakers at home for the second of three times during that regular season.

Suns` fan since `93 and first round playoffs vs Lakers. My fellow countryman Vlade Divac was playing for LAL but I cannot help myself and fell in love with that magnificient team in purple jerseys. My fave players were KJ and Thunder Dan back in the days and, man, what a comeback that was - from 0-2 to 3-2 against our friends from Cali.

I was more a barkley guy than jordan fan in the 90s so started following the suns when he was traded here.

I continued rooting for the suns when they drafted michael finley because i grew up in Wisconsin and he was my favorite college player.

Really didnt follow the team very closely in the late 90s but then i moved to Arizona in 2002 and ever since ive been a huge fan. I consider myself a basketball poligimst where both the suns and bucks are my co-favorite teams.

The year after we went to the finals. I didn't really follow bball then but saw some of their games and loved Majerle.
I really struggled when we blew the 3-1 lead to the Rockets in 95. THAT was probably our best chance to win it all. Then all the bad breaks during the Nash era. They're the last of my 4 major sports teams I need to see win a championship so I'm closer to them than ever before.

Growing up I was more NFL & MLB than NBA. I grew up in Jersey so it was the Knicks & Nets on TV. I could've cared less about either so I didn't watch much basketball at all. When I was 15 we moved to PHX after my Freshman year was over. June of 1993. My first night in PHX I watched the finals on TV and I've been a fan ever since. The Suns are my first real connection to this City. Because of that they mean the most to me out of all my teams.

Your Giants are having a good season. I keep saying their record thinking "I can't believe they are 8-3". I haven't watched them much though. This poll to begin the season was interesting. viewtopic.php?f=139&t=1476952

Yeah so far so good. The defense is coming along and getting hot at the right time. Offense still needs to put it all together if they're going to make a serious run. Eli can be good like that sometimes though so it wouldn't surprise me if he played lights out to finish out the season/in the playoffs. It wouldn't surprise me if he did the opposite, either. The joy of being a Giants fan lol.

And yes, Yankees not Mets. Although I've only followed baseball loosely for the last 10 years or so.

I was born in 85, basketball was really starting to take off here in Australia in the early 90s especially with jordan setting world crazy. Basketball is in the off-season to our number one sport over here Australian rules football. (No its not rugby)

I guess it was about 93 or 94 i started to take notice of basketball and started playing and watching in the small country town we lived in. I did like mj but i was never a fan iv just backing the favorite teams, but then this purple team would come on the tv and i really enjoyed the bloke wearing the 34 jersey. How could you not love chuck

Iv followed them ever since and last year was the year i finally got to come over and watch. Unfortunately the first game was the game bled went down and we ended the 76s losing run. I went to the next home game and we lost to cleavland which was a ok game but we lost to a Knight game winner being called for a illegal screen on Chandler. I got to watch one more game when we went to San Antonio and that was the icing on the cake when the coach really lost the players.

I am going to come back over to Phoenix next year for one last time id say, as i wont have time again so hopefully ill get to see a W.

Return to Phoenix Suns
