You are probably wise to remove the opportunity for Mr Godwin's law to be invoked, but it is not exactly a matter of ancient history as to where hardcore racism and nationalism, and demagoguery in regard to same, have led in the past. My concern btw is the rising tide of both, in general in many places in the world including Australia where I live. From my admittedly remote vantage point I don't think Trump himself is a hardcore racist, or necessarily a hardcore nationalist.

1- If the US political system is not moving too far right. I think the left has really gone left and the right has went right to counter it too, thus leaving a gap in America saying, "What the hell happened."

2- I tend to find democracynow in the same light as breithbart. There is a certain agenda both sites have and I filter all the white noise in most media anyways, so I don't like the extra work of having to filter out even more of the bias agendas of either site. They both breed an unwarranted the sky is going to fall which I find unbeneficial. IMO, he definitely isn't. But the message he put out - one that was a giant F U to political correctness and respect - not only countered overbearing <insert whatever here>-identities, but the alt-right took it to the place of condoning mainstream racism. It's possible that Trump never considered that as a possibility, but I dont think he's that naive.

His rhetoric isn't dangerous in a vacuum, but it's given low-key racists the courage they needed to be 'out' with it. And his tepid "Stop it" to racists, while just a day later going on a tweetstorm about how Mike Pence was attacked by a theatre troupe.. it doesn't give me much hope that its going to go away soon. I wasn't excusing him. I think he is a (lifelong) opportunist and a reality TV star/actor rather than a racist himself though as you would seem to agree.
