Big Question... Can Ish and RJ play together?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Sat Dec 3, 2016 3:16 am

Ish has been running the show phenomenally the last few weeks... With only 3 TOs to 50+ assists the last 8 games. Reggie is expected to be back within the next 2 or 3 games so the big question is.... Do we split minutes about 24 each.... or do we try to play them both on the floor together, since backup SG is one of our week spots on the bench? Can Reggie play off the ball offensively for 8-10 MPG?

Reggie will get 29-31 mins and Ish will get the rest. Ish is our backup PG. From the looks of it, a pretty good one.

Only time they are on the floor together will be during a small ball lineup (probably).. Reggie can't really defend the taller 2's.

I doubt they will. I just hope RJ has learned something from Ish. RJ can push the ball too.

Grant Long just said don't be surprised if you see Ish with RJ and KCP on the floor at the same time. I won't be to surprised, but don't really expect it

Can anybody here honestly tell me they think that either Hilliard or Stanley are a better option at SG than a healthy Reggie??
Can anybody here honestly tell me that Ish has not earned his minutes at PG??

At this point I'd be shocked if we didn't see them play 8-10 mpg together. Yeah, we'll definitely be giving up something defensively... but provided our offense continues to click this will clearly be our best option. And if we need more defense, well, we have options for that too.

If Stanley wasn't in the dog house I might not be so confident about saying this, but he is soooo.... this is happening. Get ready for small ball.

If RJ can shoot at a decent % then yes... we just can't shrink Ish's room to the paint

I know RJ isn't as fast as ish. Probably doesn't have the handles either. He can run tho right? I think he's probably pretty fast compared to a lot of PG's for sure has more length. So he should be able to kinda do same things as Ish, but hit the three better. Well i'd think anyway.

If we do see them together like I said cool, but idk.

the thing that makes me doubt we'll see them play together a lot is not only the mismatches (with reggie) on the defensive end but reggie on offense. we run a lot of sets that require the SG to be able to shoot coming off screens and reggie has little experience doing that and is not nearly as quick/fast as KCP so i don't think he would be able to get open off the ball well.

KCP having the ability to guard any PG in the league gives almost zero incentive to play two point guards defensively. it all comes down to offense and i think we would see a two-PG lineup very situationally like leuer paying at center.

Depending in the opponent we could hide RJ on the SG or SF and play KCP, Ish & RJ together

Ish defends the PG, KCP the better scorer of the SG/SF and RJ gets the SF...

Like against Atlanta it could be:

Ricky Schroeder v Ish
Korver v KCP
Bazemore v RJ

Situationally maybe, but it wouldn't be an everyday thing. I could see SVG going to it for a few minutes if he thought we were struggling to create. It won't be a major part of this team though.

I'd bet if HIlliard and JOhnson can't be consistent by the playoffs, and RJ is all and better we got too. Either way our starters with this change of pace game, and bench we should be nasty, signs are pointing in that direction.

I'd like to see SVG give Ish and RJ a chance to play together at some point...most likely turns into a situational type thing. For now, I think the best bet would be to split the minutes between RJ and Ish (approx. 24 each) until Reggie improves his conditioning, rust is gone, and is playing at an all-star level again. Once that happens, it'll be 30 minutes for Reggie and 18 for Ish (maybe 28 and 20 if Ish still excels).

We have the main SG in his best season and Hilliard stepping up and you still want to play RJ out of his position.

Why do you want experiments when things are good?

I wish this nonsense of Reggie playing the two would die. He's not a great shooter and will have more issues defensively. It would also screw with the chemistry/roles of the team.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

The thing I am worried is about is that Reggie like to slow the game down. Walk dribble to mid court and dribble too much.

Ish likes to push the ball down the court quickly and he gets everyone involved. The #s speak for itself. When everyone touches the ball and is involved, this team is deadly. The scoring has gone up tremendously!

If I'm not mistaken, RJ completed 35% from the 3pt line last season. He's not a sniper by any means but he's adequate and can't be left open from there. The SG position is the NBA is one of the weakest as a whole. I believe RJ can play spot minutes at the 2 to push the pace.

Also I read that RJ doesn't have the handles like ish well I actually think it's the contrary. Reggie has a mean crossover and is very quick with his maneuvers. Either way this is a strong PG unit.

The good thing is, it gives SVG options. He can create match up problems against other teams using RJ or Smith.

I'm nervous about Reggie coming back and interrupting our chemistry, I feel like Ish does a lot for our intensity too, seems like Jennings during that nice stretch a couple years back before he got hurt.

I expect we'll see a lot of them both, and maybe together against other teams that employ small ball lineups. RJ could play 2 but would struggle against some of the more physical 2s. Lately Ish has looked like he can play with anyone who knows how to play baskeball. Getting RJ's closer services back will be a help.
