He's been working hard and got his first real opportunity in 2 years and took advantage of it. He's only 6'8" but he has a 7'2 wingspan and a good vertical so there's not reason he shouldn't be a good rebounder if he's aggressive. He missed all of his 3's (including an air ball) which was disappointing considering he was shooting 46% from there in the d-league but I guess its different shooting in front of large NBA crowds compared to d-league crowds and the only way he'll overcome that is through consistent NBA minutes. But overall he looked really good and I thought the team collapsed at the end when they took him out.
14 rebounds is not just Bennett's season high, it's his CAREER high. It can't just be "he's been working hard" or "got his first real opportunity." I read that KA told him before the game that he's has to start showing something. With his body and length, there's no reason Bennett can't average 10 rebs a game if he just focuses on it as his prime directive.
His goal every game should be to gobble up all the rebounds and play good D. On offense, he should just set good screens and take open shots if they're there. If I was 6'8 with length and good build, and you put me on the court with no skills, I guarantee I could still average 10 rebs in 30 minutes by making it my one goal in life!
If he started on this team I think he'd easily average 10+ rebs because the starting unit are all below average rebounders and that was pretty evident. The two skills I think Bennett has to work on most is his "3pt shot in the NBA" and defense and I don't think he'll develop either of these in the d-league because the competition is way too weak. His shooting troubles I think are mental not skill because he's proven he can shoot the 3 in the d-league and now he needs to be able to shoot it with confidence in the NBA (a wide open three is the same whether its in the d-league or the NBA just more noise and bigger crowds). As for his defense its hard to tell what type of defender he can be because he doesn't get the opportunity to guard real players too often. Jabari got the best off him last game on a couple few isos/post ups but that's the type of experience he needs to develop there (Jabari still shot under 50% but I'm not sure how much Bennett guarded him). I don't think he lacked effort on d when he was guarding Jabari but he was a bit slow contesting shots which is likely do to his inexperience and lack of NBA PT. Anyways, you can definitely see potential with him he just needs consistent minutes to develop.
He's not starting over Trevor Booker. What he does, and what Booker does, is night and day.
Booker is averaging 10pts 8rebs 2asts 2stls per game 18 PER 58%TS.
