Even 2011 Dirk couldn't drag this injury riddled tire fire of a team into the playoffs. So why rush a banged up 38 year old back into a hopeless fight? Let Dirk rest, he has been giving mediocre players piggyback rides for long enough.

It's only a concern if we were a contending team. We are far from it, so no it's not.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some under the table agreement between Nowitzki, Cuban, and Carlisle to have Dirk miss so much time allowing us to lose games easier while also allowing Dirk to spend some time with his family "recovering"

Murmurs... Waive Your No-Trade Clause

Post#64 » by Jinra » Tue Dec 13, 2016 9:39 pm

There are murmurs out there that Dirk should approach Mavericks Execs about possibly waiving his no-trade. They say another mid-first rounder could be in play.

Put yourself in the GM seat:
Do you consider it if Dirk comes to you?
What are some realistic options that might be out there?
Do you pull the trigger?
Or, do you talk Dirk into retirement, with your team option after the season?

Where have you heard that? But it's not easy to match his salary in a trade. Plus if you consider where he is at this stage of his life with 3 kids, it makes it unlikely that he'd be that interested in moving.

No way he waives it. He knew what he was signing into. He would have left if he wanted to.

Unless he actually wanted to go to a winner do we entertain whatever he wants, we owe Dirk everything.

But he will never leave, and is a loyal Mav for life, why go elsewhere for your last year anyway, hes a HOFer on one team his whole career, a rare feat.

Personally id rather lose and see Dirk on this team then win.

My feelings resemble this sentiment more than the alternative.

The Warriors, before the Durant thing, were actually a really good way out.

Now, even if you just pretend that this would be possible, there's no realistic option. Don't forget Dirk's salary. Teams have to match salaries in trades. Look around the contending teams and you will see that it's difficult to make a trade.

It's hard to know what the Mavs are really doing/will do: focus on young players? Try again next off-season to build a roster to again chase a playoff spot? Dirk can be a part of either really. The late 1st rounder or minor prospects you'd get for him are not that enticing to get worked over him staying around.

Dirk says retirement possible seasons end

Post#71 » by Jinra » Wed Dec 14, 2016 4:22 pm

No denying it now. Something is really happening behind the scenes.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nowitzki-says-retirement-could-happen-2017-130915582--nba.html

Dirk is adamant he plays to 20 years.
Dirk gets hurt with minor strain.
Dirk comes back and plays.
Dirk on the shelf again with definite time table for return - 1 more week.
Mavericks keep losing.
Out of the blue, Dirk out indefinitely.
Dirk in media session 1 week ago, I am not retiring.
Now - I may retiring at the end of the year.

I doubt it. Obviously health is a factor, but the appeal of playing with Barnes after a year in the system along with whatever high lottery talent we bring in from the draft will be enough to make the old man come back one more year. Regardless, it's sad to be so close to the end of the Nowitzki era

Maybe someone who knows German and has access to the original article can help us understand his state of mind better, but just reading off the translation, it feels like he is just being realistic, "If I have injury problems and am in pain, I'll retire". He still mentions that the goal is to play until 2018 though.

Agreee. Dirk's salary will prevent him from being traded into a favorable basketball situation. In addition,Dirk is just not healthy enough to help a playoff team.

If it hurts too much to play basketball and prevents the game from being fun anymore why wouldn't he consider retirement earlier than planned?

He would never want to play of a new Team, even if its only for one Game. And its not like Dirk is competing and can't win. Its like with Kobe in hist last Years, he can be happy if he can stay on the court. He knows the time to compete for championships is over.

Nowitzki has earned the right to make his own choice. Even if he does not reach the two decade mark, he's a legend that left the franchise with plenty of memories. Before he and Cuban came along, the franchise was a mess. Mavericks fans should forever be grateful to these two guys.

I really hate this for Dirk. I think that this comes down to Dirk NOT having fun playing for this Dallas team. This is not the playoff team that he emphasize he wanted in order to keep playing. The Dallas Mavericks have hit a new decade low.I wanted Dirk to go out on a high note as well, but I think it is just reality that every player waits at least one year too late to retire; which is why most announce retirement mid-season or at the end of the season.

What I DO NOT like is when a team feels like it has to pay for a "past-his-prime" icon to wind down his career. Based off productivity and team needs, and that sort of stuff, there is no way anyone can justify Dirk being the 4th highest paid player is the league this year.

That being said, start the farewell tour. Start building the 15ft statue with Dirk's signature fade-away, and place that bad boy on the front lawn. Give Dirk whatever position he wants in the front office. Start planning the jersey retirement... because this franchise should not endure one more year of Dirk Nowitzki being the priority and focus as a player.
