Fantasy Auction Game: Hawk Eye vs Timmaytime--FINALS

Post#1 » by Hawk Eye » Wed Dec 7, 2016 7:33 pm

Here is a quick list of what you need in your writeup.

1. Specific years for each player on your team
2. Rotations and minutes for each player
3. Reasoning as to why your team will win and/or why people should vote for you.

Do NOT vote in this thread until both players have submitted their writeups.

**First to 5 votes advances**

I think this is another first for me as well! I've never faced Snakebites and if memory serves I'm like 99% certain we haven't faced off either. I've actually got some free time at the moment so I'll have the write-up posted soonish. Hopefully you can get yours up soon as well. Let's do this 8-)

Starters:

PG: Chris Paul (2007-08)
SG: Reggie Miller (1993-94)
SF: Julius Erving (1981-82)
PF: Dirk Nowitzki (2010-11)
C: Bill Russell (1964-65)

Bench:

G: John Stockton (1996-97)
F: Shane Battier (2008-09)
C: Bill Walton (1976-77)

First off, congrats to Timmaytime for building a great team around LeBron and reaching the Finals. LeBron/Robinson is a hell of a duo but I really like my chances in this one.

Write-Up:

My write-up essentially isn't going to change since I always stick to talking up my team so I'll just provide some things I'd like to make note of...

1. The SG matchup between Reggie/Klay. I think it's close but Reggie should have the advantage here. He's got an amazing track record against strong playoff defenses. He always buried clutch shots in the playoffs and is in all honesty, probably one of the top-5 offensive playoff performers for the better part of the 90's. He's a more proven #1 option in the event that any of my other starters get cold, and any edge that Klay has defensively isn't significant enough to close the gap imo.

2. I'm bringing Russell off the bench for this matchup and playing him 22 minutes while Walton gets the start and plays for a total of 28 minutes. Starting Russell when my C matchup is David Robinson just wouldn't have made much sense. Walton is going to give Robinson a signifcantly more difficult time on the court guarding him then vice-versa.

3. I think playmaking finally catches up with Timmaytime here. LeBron is the only elite playmaker in his starting 5 while I've got multiple different playmakers at different positions to spread the offense and keep it flowing.

Ultimately, these are two VERY strong teams so I'm looking forward to how the voting plays out. Good luck Timmaytime!

I'll be sticking to my style of talking up my team (as usual). For starters, I honestly believe I have assembled, not necessarily the best overall roster, but the best fitting roster. This team literally has everything: transition offense, athleticism, playmaking, shooting, defense, off-ball play, i could go on and on.

I decided to go with 82' Erving. Was still in his prime, led the Sixers to 58 wins, and took a much superior Lakers team to 6 games in the Finals (and he played great through all of it). The most important factor is that he was already accustomed to deferring to a high usage ball handler (Cheeks) which is exactly why the fit is so perfect with 08' CP3. His off-ball game, cutting, and slashing was much greater by this point as well.

Reggie is probably the GOAT off-ball player which is something your going to need with such a stacked team of scorers like mine. I think he fits like a glove and Paul is going to make life unbelievably easy for him with his ability to zip passes through windows/lanes that aren't even there.

Walton/Russell is the epitome of the perfect center rotation. They compliment eachother so well with Russell's defense, quickness, length, and Walton's passing, playmaking, and scoring.

G: '96 Gary Payton
G: '15 Klay Thompson
F: '13 Lebron James
F: '02 Rasheed Wallace
C: '96 David Robinson

G: '87 Derek Harper
F: '78 George Gervin
C: '75 Artis Gilmore

Rotations:
Gary Payton (36) / Derek Harper (10) / Lebron James (2)
Klay Thompson (36) / Derek Harper (12)
Lebron James (26) / George Gervin (22)
Rasheed Wallace (32) / Lebron James (12) / David Robinson (2)
David Robinson (34) / Artis Gilmore (14)

Rebuttal:

Only playmaker is Lebron
Payton averaged 7.5 apg in '96. Every one of his Sonic's teams other than the last one ('03) had a top 10 offense. Derek Harper averaged 7.9 apg in '87 and his Mavs were ranked 2nd in ORTG, while also being in the bottom half of the league in pace. Admiral averaged 3 apg from the center position. We've got playmaking.

'82 Erving
This doesn't mean much, but Mo Cheeks usage in '82 was 16%, Erving's was 28%. Dr. J didn't defer all that much.

Write-up:

Lebron is gonna go wild this series. When Battier isn't in, Hawk Eye is forcing Dr. J to guard him, and when Battier is in, his offense suffers. Walton/Russell are both solid, but DRob is a better overall player than either of them, although Russell probably has a slight edge defensively. Klay probably ends up matching pretty well with Reggie, because he actually has some hope of guarding him.

Wallace/Payton on Dirk/Paul is huuuuge. I happen to have two of the greatest man defenders at their positions to deal with Hawk Eyes best offensive players. I can't imagine stopping either, but i'll be able to slow them down. When Russell is in, i'll have Robinson (or Gilmore) free to help whenever he needs. Gervin will impose his will here too. Battier will be stuck on Lebron, and Hawk Eye doesn't have anyone else to guard him.

I think Hawk Eye has built an incredibly balanced team, but I also think I matchup here better than he does. I have stops for the Dirk/Paul PnR, and he doesn't have any stops for my wing scoring.

Congrats on two great teams.

I'm seeing a push or an advantage for Hawkeye at every position except the three, and even there prime Doc is a capable defender who will keep LeBron busy at the defensive end. I don't see it as that great a mismatch. Hawkeye has one of the best teams I've seen assembled. No weaknesses, really.

Vote:Hawkeye
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I have to vote for Hawk Eye here. Lebron is without a doubt an amazing player, and the best player in this series, but to be perfectly honest I feel like Hawk Eye has the advantage everywhere else.

Russell/Walton are each equal to Robinson or better- crazy that Gilmore is the weakest of the 4 centers in this matchup but its clearly true, Dirk will simply outplay Rasheed despite Sheed's defense (I'm a Piston fan, I've seen it), and CP3/Miller are an amazing pairing in the backcourt that has a clear edge over Payton/Thompson.

Have loved Hawk Eye's team from start to finish. Doing a writeup against him was no easy task and I am honored to have come so close to beating him. I think he's got the edge here. His team meshes well too, so I don't think chemistry is going to save Timmaytime in this matchup.

Vote Hawk Eye.

I just feel like Hawkeye has the better overall team here so my vote is Hawkeye.

I still think TT has the best team in this tournament, particularly at the defensive end. He's also got a far superior bench which I expect to dominate in this matchup. Against a wing rotation of LeBron/Klay/Gervin/Harper, I don't think a combination of Dr. J, Reggie, Stockton at SG, and 22 minutes of Battier is going to cut it defensively.

Hawk Eye for me. Just an unreal offensive team and enough defense on LeBron and Robinson to get the job done.

I think I'll go timmaytime. I just think the team has a higher defensive ceiling. despite being not as talented, still has scoring form every position and the best player.

not sure if my vote counts or not, since I didn't play this game - and i suppose there's a point at which outside votes are needed, but i don't know whether we're there yet

but if my vote WERE to count, i would go with Hawk Eye. I don't like Gervin or Klay guarding Dr. J, IMO the 3rd greatest player of all time. I can live with Klay guarding Reggie. Sheed on Dirk is a huge disadvantage, and Russell on Robinson obviously makes the Admiral's life a living hell.

Drats! Wish I would have started from the beginning, don't think I would have splurged so much on Bron had I been the one bidding.

Good job Hawk Eye!

Can't imagine Erving playing too many minutes without Bron, considering Bron's playing 40 minutes. I guess either way it doesnt matter
