Well can he play like Dirk or play like Ryan Anderson? All tall white dudes get compared to Dirk but none have come close.

I see quite more of Dirk in him than Anderson. Lauri has a sweet jumper, can play in the post or drive with the ball. Not a rebounder or a defender. Of course, we can't know which he will be when he gets to the NBA, I certainly hope he's more like Dirk.

Like Champs says, every white guy gets the Dirk comparison, but it isn't horribly far off with Lauri. He is an average athlete, but he has nice mobility for a 7 footer and a nice shooting stroke.
I don't see him on the Mavs though, unless they miss on their favorite target, and trade down to pick up future assets.

Oh god, please no! The Mavericks have been down this road many times before trying to replicate their Dirk find by drafting Euro talent. Total waste so far.
Everyone else is digging up gold nuggets in the crowded pool, you dig in an isolated area and strike a huge nugget. But, then you waste the next 15 years digging relentlessly in that same area and get nothing, while everyone else passes you up by staying in the main pool.
Let's not look to replicate a Dirk. Let's just find the next 2 superstars, period!

What?? First of all, who have the Mavs drafted trying to replicate Dirk? You haven't even had a pick that high for years. And I'm not trying to get you guys jump on that "have to have a guy like Dirk" bandwagon. I just like Dirk comparison for Lauri, and I see that POTENTIAL. Not saying he will be a superstar. We can't say for sure about anyone until we get them to the NBA

Yes, you are right. No high picks in years. We have watched Donnie Nelson waste picks and draft day acquisitions on countless 7 ft Euros. Donnie track record is well document to be more concerned about the fools gold oversees, than finding true talent here. http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/teams/Dallas-Mavericks/6/draft-history
My point is, I personally am turned off by any mention of a projected player that resembles Dirk, as if that is all Dallas would ever be interested in. It makes more sense maybe to say a "stretch 4" as Dirk was. Maybe I am just taking it the wrong way, and if I am, I apologize. But for years, people pop in and be like "Dallas should draft this guy, he reminds me of Dirk". And I be like...

Re: Dallas Mavericks 2017 Draft
My heart would almost tell me to trade down and pick Lauri Markkanen and hope maybe he could step in and at least be 70% of Dirk?
My brain would tell me not to pass up on Jackson, Fultz or Ball.
If Cuban somehow manages to not trade our pick, there is going to be a heavy burden on all involved in the decision process. Hopefully Cuban will listen to the basketball minds around him.

There is no way I trade away the #1 pick. I draft Fultz there and if someone wants to pry him away, then they had better make an AMAZINGLY good offer.
If we end up at 2 or lower, then I would be more willing to trade down, but I would still lean BPA, unless a very good offer was made.

Name one besides Nick Fazeckas(sp?). And don't try to sell me on the 7'6" Russian dude as a Dirk clone.

Considering where you are from, you might have a small bias

We actually drafted Olynyk and Muscala in 2013

Considering where you are from, you might have a small biasTBF I haven't seen Lauri play much, so I don't know how his potential is. But just remember that a guy like Kaminsky could also post up and put it on the floor in college. Does Lauri have a higher ceiling?
I just see similarities in playing style man

We actually drafted Olynyk and Muscala in 2013So the closest we come to Dirk look-a-likes were not euros and were not really picked by us...
Sorry, not Euros, but foreign.
Milovan Rakovic
Yuyang Xue
Zhizhi Wang
Ansu Sesay
Bruno Sundov
My point was to detail Donnie's fascination with the foreign project.
I guess it doesn't not matter in the grand scheme of things, but the rate of return makes that a failing system in analytics. Time to try something different. I mean the goal is to get the best talent possible right? I hate to say it again, but look at San Antonio. They continue to nail pick after pick late in each round. That's gotta mean something. And yes, I understand that SA hits on a large number of foreign players, and.... we don't.

This is the issue. It's not about foreign vs domestic players, I mean, Jared Cunningham, Maurice Ager and Dominique Jones were pretty awful too. We need to hit on draft picks, period.

Re: Dallas Mavericks 2017 Draft
I just want the best player available. Basically, the only top player we have for the future now is Barnes so I am not worried about duplicating talents.
If we end out with a pick at the top of the draft, I don't want to trade down.

Sesay and Sundov were drafted the same year as Dirk. Wang was drafted the year after. and was Donn Nelson's project not Donnie's. Rakovic and Xue were drafted for other teams just like Olynyk and Zeller. Since Dirk was drafted the only foreign guys we used slightly valuable picks on were Roddy B and the Russian center. All the others were second rounders and a lot of teams gamble on foreign players in the second round.
