Vegas Owner Defends Use Of 'Golden Knights'

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Nov 30, 2016 9:01 pm

Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point but says that the naming of his NHL expansion team doesn't cross any lines with the U.S. Army, whose longtime elite parachute team also uses the nickname Golden Knights.

"I have complete respect for the US Army and all that it does for our nation," Foley told ESPN in an email after news surfaced that the U.S. Army was looking into the official naming of the 31st NHL franchise last week because of the shared nickname.

"Our development and use of the name Vegas Golden Knights was based upon Nevada being the largest gold producing state in the country and the golden tones of the Las Vegas strip," Foley wrote.

Golden Nights, without the k, would make more sense.

So the players are nights? That doesn't make sense.

After some thought I guess some current sports team names don't make sense either. Like Utah Jazz. Miami Heat. Etc.

If one wins in Las vegas, their night was golden. The strip is golden with lights at night. Las Vegas has no connection at all to knights.

Well, Utah originally began as the New Orleans Jazz before being moved to Utah; New Orleans...Jazz music...get it?? and Heat...because Miami is one of the top 5(??) warmest cities in the U.S...kinda makes sense, just like the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix being the warmest city in the U.S.

Yes. I get that.

Re-read what I wrote. The players are nights? That doesn't make sense. Like players being Jazz or Heat doesn't make sense.

Get it???

You literally said "some current sports team names don't make sense either." I took that to mean you didn't know why they were named that way in the first place, but now I understand your point. Apologies. But, I mean, your argument goes for every team name in the NBA...the players are Clippers? The players are Lakers? The players are Thunder? The players are Trail Blazers?

As a Las Vegas resident, it is pretty much assumed that eventually everyone will just refer to them as the Vegas Knights/Nights, just like the Tampa Bay Devil Rays turned into the Rays.

I mean, Silver Knights wouldve made more sense since we are the "Silver State", but I digress.

Las Vegas Hookers (thats a hockey term right ?)
They could play in an arena called the Brothel
Squatters could try to take it over when no one is looking every off-season
Fans throw Foreclosure signs on the ice for a hat trick
Around the World season ticket package
Half price tickets if you make it to the arena without being robbed or killed

Now that would be Golden
