Weak first quarter, but at least the bench is hanging on so far in the second.

Due to the hole the Kings are already in yes it was, but this was a good loss in a way because you can practically blame it on Gay and Cuz being completely off. The effort was there, and the rotations were better after the half. If they play like this every night they have a chance this year to make some noise, outside of Cuz and Gay having sketchy games of course, they can't have that any night and expect to win.
I thought Ben looked good and it was nice to see Tolliver get some minutes. He plays solid defense and if they can find him rhythm shots he can be a huge part of a potential turn around. Now with that said, I fully expect to not see either Ben or Tolliver for a month or so because duh.

If they play like this every night they're going to win 30 games...

It's a bad loss because the Knicks played without Rose -- who is their best guard on their roster and Porzingis had an off night. It was essentially Melo and scrubs vs the Kings. And they won on our home court. It's not a good look at all.
They killed the Kings on the boards -- the Knicks were +15 on that department. Knicks committed 16 turnovers, while the Kings committed only 7. This game was there for the taking but they didn't capitalize on it. This team doesn't do the little things i.e. winning plays, concentration, etc to make the step forward into becoming a good team.

You have to look at what the Kings are trying to do, especially on defense. They want to be a team that generates turnovers and I didn't see a ton of sloppy Knicks play as a sole reason for those turnovers. The Kings want to create turnovers as a part of their defense. I'm not a huge fan of that as a defensive backbone but they accomplished it, especially Temple who is turning into a defensive pest lately.
Rose was out but that meant more Jennings who last I recall was a total Kings killer and they put him in check for most of the game. The boards were a problem but not that huge of one. The Kings shot like 40% so of course you are going to be at a disadvantage. They lost the offensive rebounding battle by only 6 and mostly thanks to O'Quinn in a small grouping of plays. For the first time this year Cousins also finally said enough is enough and owned the boards late. He has been putting up better numbers than the start of the year but he's just not dominating the boards like he used to so hopefully that changes going forward.
All in all you had Joerger once again fiddling with the lineup and it looked like a more balanced team as a result. The question is how it changes from here on out because I think if Joerger isn't being told to spread the minutes around for showcase purposes then I think that historic numbes of starting lineups he put out in Memphis last year might been mostly his own doing even beyond their injuries. That's another strategy I loathe because inconsistent minutes will breed inconsistent output.
