Where's Your Brain, DJ?

What was DJ thinking with that foul of Frazier on the perimeter just before the end of the half?

Yea, I actually didn't mind the idea of him when he was first drafted, it seemed like a solid pick as a rim running, shot blocking, energy type PF who has a 7'4.5" wingspan. Maybe we missed out

Felton had a death in the family. And I was happy when we drafted Diallo before we traded him. If you can get a top 10 high schooler in the second round, why not see if you can tap into his potential?

...because you want to get 22 year old David Michineau: http://www.basketball-reference.com/euro/players/david-michineau-1.html

Maybe not the best decision, but Stone also has potential

A Look Back on the Draft

Post#30 » by Ranma » Sun Dec 11, 2016 4:51 am

I didn't know enough about Diallo to feel one way or the other about him during the draft; I knew he was on the BPA list at that point in the proceedings. While I was a little dismayed to trade down from the top of the 2nd round, I thought we got decent value in trading for the back-to-back picks starting 8 picks later. However, we could have also purchased the pick just before those selection slots from the Bucks that the Warriors used to select Patrick McCaw. Also, I thought getting Stone was good value with 1 of the 2 picks we got in the trade down, but we used the other one on Michineau, who most thought could be signed as an undrafted free agent; Doc initially said that he planned on having him start the season with the big club only to send him overseas.

Even with our dwindling draft options, Doc doesn't do a good job of making the most of our draft opportunities. This in spite of devoting more resources into the draft evaluation process. Taking Brice Johnson with our 1st-round pick was a bit of a letdown for me and this is coming from the guy who advocated for him to get consideration early on in the pre-draft process.

Missing on Michineau?

To be fair, we all knew David Michineau was a project in need of development, but it was a head-scratcher to see an organization not known for developing young talent under Doc take him that high even in the 2nd round. I was hoping Lawrence Frank's increasing influence was an indication of a different and more improved approach to our draft, but it doesn't look promising even so soon after the draft.

I wish we would have gone with my preferred approach and take Furkan Korkmaz with the 25th overall pick. Brice Johnson would have been my top target with the 32nd overall pick, but if he was unavailable I would have given serious consideration to Deyonta Davis and Patrick McCaw at that spot. I probably would have leaned toward McCaw, personally, but it would have been tough to bypass a prospect who was given lottery consideration even if he was mentally weak during the live draft broadcast. Buying the 38th overall pick would have netted us at least McCaw but if we had already selected him before then, we still could have taken either Stone or Michineau at that point if the team really believes in his long-term projection.

agree with OG that Stone has potential. offensively he can play right now imo but he just does not have the defensive tools to be an NBA big. I do think Stone can carve a career similar to our Mo. Michineau had a great body, for a PG anyway. I am still hopeful we somehow eventually find a way to get him back and have him be a productive player.

but hey, I honestly can say I have never heard of either Stone or Michneau before we drafted them. barely heard of Diallo. second round kids are truly a crapshoot unless you are scouting players like a pro. well maybe I am just speaking for myself, I don't spend nearly as much time looking up basketball prospoects as I do with baseball.

well despite our collective wrath for Austin's inadaquacies, hope he is not too terribly hurt. he was showing classic symptoms of concussion, with loss of balance and looking disoriented.
