He brought up the family member, who is himself a professional basketball player and a public figure, because the topic was Cousins being involved in an incident at a club. His brother was with him in the last incident that resulted in an arrest, so the brother was named. Again, it wasn't some unrelated family incident irrelevant to the topic at hand, it was a incident very similar to the one that just happened, so it was mentioned.
As far as spin, you don't think the players and teams do this too? Everyone plays that game, that's why the team and players have their own PR consultants. And are you implying that Cousin's image is just part of a media spin conspiracy and not any fault of his own?
No, he knows the rules in dealing with those parasites, he should shut up and pull a Bill Belichick/Marshaun Lynch I am just here because I don't want to get fined. The situation is what it is, they have access, I just wish they didn't. I am a fan of a team, I want that team to win, the team wants to win. The media wants to sell advertising, which one does not belong?
If the media had no effect on generating fan interest and thus additional revenue for both the team and the NBA also, do you think the league would mandate media access to the players? The local team being in the local papers, or even national media, every day basically is free advertising for their product, which brings more people to attend more games and buy more merchandise, which in the end allows the team to generate more revenue to sign better players to help the team win more.
How well do you think a team would do as a business, which is relevant to its competiveness, if it had zero media coverage? And it can't just be a one way street where they will only allow favorable coverage, because that's what their PR department does. Its a mutually beneficial relationship, the team uses the media for free advertising, the media uses the team to draw traffic.
There are so many reasons that these teams NEED the media, let's not act like there is no benefit on their end.
There is a benefit, but what about the negative image the media portrays of the team, which one do you think you hear more of? Up here in the northeast the media market is terrible, multiple papers, tv stations radio stations etc all vying for ratings, What do you hear about, the winning streak or a player being late for practice. Up until the 90s the media did have a role in service to the fan, but that role has been usurped by the web driven new media. The traditional sports reporting has gone by the wayside and has been replaced by what we have now. Rumors, muck, unnamed sources. Iam dating myself, but I remeber the time when reporters would not publish an account with unnamed sources, now every article is rife with them, more media, same amount of news, but now more time to fill. Andno one is saying zero coverage, you cant ask espn, TNT or whoever that pays broadcast fees not to have access, I never said such a thing and that would be too stupid to fathom.
Look through the Boston, NY or Philly papers and look for positive articles. Check about Melo saying he may need some time off. You think he stole a pocketbook from his grandmother. How many of us have said we could use a couple of days off? Now you see him portrayed in the media as a lazy, non appreciate person. Players playing hurt, barely a mention, siting out a game while nursing an injury, bank robbery! How many times Cousins has said he is fine being with the kings, how many stories do you read that are contrary
