2016 RealGM Pro-Wrestling Awards

Post#1 » by Spens1 » Wed Dec 21, 2016 3:14 am

With 2016 winding down and not much happening in the wrestling world really until 2017, its time to do some random voting

(Going to do it kind of like the observer awards since it has a lot of categories). I tried to keep it relatively even, giving New Japan, ROH and TNA a slot each, with WWE getting the other 6, with another for other (if other state who in the comments).

Wrestler of the year - as in the poll, 9 options + other. If other state who in the comments
Most outstanding wrestler - Focused more on the in ring output moreso than wrestler of the year which is the complete package.
Feud of the Year - self explanatory, best feud this year from any promotion
Tag Team of the Year - again, best tag team from any promotion
Most improved wrestler - most improved wrestler for the year from any promotion (overall, as a complete package)
Best on Interviews - Best wrestler on the mic from any promotion
Most Charismatic - Most charismatic wrestler from any promotion
Best Technical Wrestler - Best technical wrestler from any promotion
Best Brawler - Best brawler from any promotion
Best High-Flyer/Luchador - Best high flying wrestler/luchador for the year
Most Underrated - Most underrated/underappreciated wrestler from any promotion in your mind
Promotion of the Year - the promotion your felt had the best year as a company and as a product
Best TV Show - The best wrestling TV show for the entire year (from january)
Match of the Year - Best match for the year
Rookie of the Year - Best first year wrestler (meaning wrestler who made their wrestling debut, not just debuting in a company)
Best Non-Wrestler - Best individual who isn't a wrestler (i.e. managers, authority figures)
Best Commentator - Best commentator from any promotion
Best Major Wrestling Show - Best wrestling show overall (so the best individual show, that includes PPV's and specials, from any promotion)
Best Booker - Best booker of any promotion for the year
Promoter of the Year - Best promoter/manager from any promotion for the year
Best Gimmick - act with the best gimmick for the year

Worst Commentator - Worst commentator from any promotion
Most Overrated - Most overrated wrestler in your mind from any promotion
Worst Major Wrestling Show - Worst wrestling show overall (worst individual show including PPV's or specials)
Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic - So most tasteless, tactless disgusting tactic a promotion has used
Worst Television Show - Worst wrestling TV show for the year from any promotion
Worst Match of the Year - Worst wrestling match of the year from any promotion
Worst Feud of the year - Worst feud from any promotion for the year
Worst Promotion of the Year - The promotion you feel has performed the worst out of any promotion
Worst Gimmick - Act with the worst gimmick of the year

Like its a long list so pick and choose which ones you want to vote on (like i'd say major ones are wrestler of the year, oustanding wrestler, technical, lucha and brawler of the years and maybe best and worst tv shows + best and worst promotion, then some of the other side ones are interesting too).

Wrestler of the year - AJ Styles: greatest rookie year of all time.

Most outstanding wrestler - Sami Zayn: I feel like as long as he is alive he should win this award.

Feud of the Year - Charlotte vs Sasha: Carried Raw for the last few months of the year.

Tag Team of the Year - The Revival: Consistently were involved in near 5 star matches.

Most improved wrestler - Alexa Bliss: Overshadowed by the four horsewomen. She belongs amongst them.

Best on Interviews - Chris Jericho: This should be unanimous. Literally got the word "it" over.

Most Charismatic - Shinsuke Nakamura: I haven't seen a guy that naturally oozes charisma like this since The Rock.

Best Technical Wrestler - Cesaro

Best Brawler - Samoa Joe

Best High-Flyer/Luchador -

Most Underrated - John Cena: As I've said before, he's the best heel and face in the company simultaneously and all of his matches elevate the guy he works with.

Promotion of the Year - NXT

Best TV Show - Raw: Smackdown is overall a better show week to week, but the post big 4 Raws are must see tv.

Match of the Year - Sami Zayn vs Shinsuke Nakamura: Takeover Dallas

Best Non-Wrestler - Renee Young

Best Commentator - Corey Graves

Best Major Wrestling Show - NXT Takeover: Toronto

Best Gimmick - Enzo and Cass: Gave them the win because they are almost exclusively over because of their gimmick.

Worst Commentator - David Otunga

Most Overrated - Brock Lesnar: His matches don't feel big anymore, are the same old sh*t over and over, and he himself clearly doesn't take it seriously.

Worst Major Wrestling Show - TLC: Could win every year. Shameless crappy gimmick matches.

Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic - Susan G Komen: I just have a problem with that charity in general. Won't get into it but I urge others to look into them.

Worst Match of the Year - Tie: Every Dana Brooke match.

Worst Feud of the year - Rusev vs Dolph Ziggler

Worst Gimmick - Roman Reigns: Not his fault. He would be a money heel as the darling of the authority. Instead he's a combo of sloppy shield seconds and a guy that just makes stank fart faces.
Do it for Chuck

(will edit it as i go on since i need to add stuff still)

Wrestler of the year - Tetsuya Naito (bit of a controversial one but as a complete package Naito has been amazing. Having amazing matches and being the most over wrestler in New Japan right now. It was a toss-up between him and AJ Styles (who has been far and away the best WWE wrestler i think) but i gave the nod to Naito on the basis of charisma. HM: AJ Styles, Matt Hardy

Most Oustanding Wrestler - AJ Styles (Styles may miss out for me on wrestler of the year, but for me he has been the best wrestler in the ring. Every match of his is must see and pretty much any match he wrestles, especially every one he wrestled this year, has been great). HM: Sami Zayn, Kazuchika Okada

Best Technical Wrestler - AJ Styles (i guess he falls under high flyer also but as a technician he is probably the best in the world right now). HM: Kazuchika Okada

Best High-Flyer - Will Ospreay (absolutely phenomenal year from him, going to New Japan and ROH, only worry is he may be doing everything too fast, however his matches are exciting and fast paced). HM: Ricochet, Fenix, Kota Ibushi

Best Brawler - Katsuyori Shibata (he is sick in his head but Shibata is the hardest hitting man in the wrestling world right now, absolute monster that is to be feared and he is only 200lbs, who would have thought). HM: Cesaro, Tomohiro Ishii, Jeff Cobb, Samoa Joe

Most Improved Wrestler - Matt Hardy (who would have thought Matt Hardy of all people would be the one leading TNA into 2017, he has established himself with Broken Matt Hardy as the premier talent in the company and is one of the main reasons it is one of the better products on TV today, despite issues at corporate level). HM: Chris Jericho, The Miz

Best Gimmick - Broken Matt Hardy (like there was any other option, far and away the best gimmick this year, a character with so many intricacies, it is his own little world really. A character that has been able to get over anything and everything, including a boat, a remote control drone, reby sky's father, reby sky herself, their son etc. HM: Chris Jericho

Promotion of the Year - NJPW (Highly succesful year for them, which is a shock really given they lost their main tag team and 2 of the biggest stars within the first month. They've recovered nicely, finding new stars in Kenny Omega and Tetsuya Naito to replace them at the top. Whilst the tag team division isn't the same and they have struggled for most of the year in the Jr Heavyweight ranks, which that too is improving, their product overall has been very good and business wise, they're in the best position since their peak in the 90's). HM: WWE

TV Show of the year: Lucha Underground (They've done it yet again, after a slow season 2, season 3 has been absolutely amazing, with the emergence of Pentagon Jr/Dark, Johnny Mundo, Sexy Star and reermergence of Prince Puma and Mil Muertes, plus Mantanza's destruction, this show has everything a fan of wrestling could possibly ever want) HM: Impact Wrestling

Best-Non Wrestler: Dario Cueto (one of the best authority figures ever, seriously this guy is an absolute treat, he is a heel but he does things for a reason, everything is calculated, everything is for a long term goal and for his enjoyment. He is the ultimate puppeteer. He also has a compelling backstory which not many other authority figures have). HM: N/A

Best Major Wrestling Show: Invasion Attack (really close between this and Money in the Bank but Invasion Attack gets the nod, mainly due to slightly better wrestling on the card (and not subjecting me to a Golden Truth match) and some great angles such as Tatsu's return, Sanada's debut, Shibata vs the Old Guard with Nagata getting in his face along with Naito fulfilling a 3 year oddesy after being rejected from the main event by the fans, and finally winning the big one) HM: Money in the Bank

Tag Team of the Year: The Revival (The best heel tag team in the world today, its atonishing that they went from barely known to being one of the better names in NXT and guys who are likely to be called out very soon, they're everything a heel tag team should be, proper old schol mentality also) HM: The New Day, Young Bucks

Most Underrated: Sami Zayn (the man has been one of the best wrestlers this year, but cannot get a snif of any of the titles, to be honest he should have been on smackdown and main eventing given how much quality he has, at least finally they may have him in a major storyline against Strowman, but its taken far too long) HM: Cesaro

Most Charismatic: Shinsuke Nakamura (just name this the Nakamura award until he retires, he owns this really) HM: Broken Matt Hardy, Tetsuya Naito, Chris Jericho, Rush

Best on Interviews: Chris Jericho (everytime he has a mic, people listen, like really listen, this is the best incarnation of Jericho since 08 and his feud with Micheals, he is gold). HM: Kevin Owens, Tetsuya Naito

Best Commentator: Mauro Ranello (a good WWE commentator, a rarity right, he is the best colour commentator WWE has had since JR, and the fact that he is quality despite having to deal with JBL and Otunga is astonishing). HM: Corey Graves, Vampiro

Best Booker: Ryan Ward (i know i didn't include smackdown because its the whole year but Ward's half a year of booking here was more than enough).

Match of the Year: Sami Zayn vs Shinsuke Nakamura (this was just hype, so much hype around the match and then they pull this off

Rookie of the Year: Gzim Selmani (one half of the authors of pain, an absolute freak of nature, i mean i couldn't think of many other wrestlers who debuted this year specifically but he as apart of of the AOP has been amazing)

Feud of the Year: Tetsuya Naito v Kazuchika Okada/NJPW (again i go back to New Japan for this one, this feud which is still kind of ongoing in terms of Naito v New Japan, has been amazing and the backstory for it has been 3 years in the making, which given the past makes this all the more compelling) HM: The Miz v Daniel Bryan

And now for the worst

Most Overrated: Brock Lesnar (he rocks up and stands there, or he rocks up and suplex's people, they've killed suplex city and it isn't really his fault, its just that they don't let him really do or say anything, and brock when he's allowed some room to breath can be entertaining on the mic, especially playing of Heyman, but we haven't had that, also this almost applies to heyman himself as his mic work has been some of the worst in his career, but there is only so many times you can say the same thing before it gets old). HM:

Worst Commentator: David Otunga (oh the choices, this is a 5 way toss up between 4 WWE commentators and 1 really bad TNA commentator, but Otunga wins out for just being that awful, seriously he's only been on commentary for a few months and he comes off terribly and doesn't do anything or provides anything, get him off my TV now) HM: Josh Matthews, Byron Saxton, Micheal Cole, JBL

Worst Major Wrestling Show: Triplemania 2016 (so many issues, oh so many issues with this show, first of all most of the matches were spotty as all hell, as an english viewer there was just too much wrong with the show to enjoy it) HM: Wrestlemania 32,

Most Digusting Promotional Tactic: Using Eddie Guerrero to get Sasha Banks over (when Foley said "you are a part of Eddie's legacy now" i had no words, absolutely none. They used it 10 years ago for Mysterio, that was bad enough but at least he kinda was close, i'm not convinced Sasha knew them, yeah i'm sure Vickie would have given her consent but even Chavo himself tweeted that he wasn't too much of a fan of this). HM: Susan G Komen

Worst Television Show of the Year: ROH Wrestling (its astonishing how boring the tv product has been, this is a product that one year ago was actually really compelling, now its regular shows are mostly irrelevant and don't do a lot towards the build) and whilst their is slight improvement recently, it doesn't forgive them for the large proportion of the year, the only saving grace this entire year i feel was Jay Lethal's title run). HM: Raw, NXT

Worst Promotion of the Year: Ring Of Honor (yep, they're picking up worst promotion also, i cannot think of a major company who has had a worse year than ROH in terms of growth, and that includes TNA who nearly went bust, they've lost most of their mid card because of bad booking, have built 0 stars this year and are probably about to lose their best and second best talents in Cole and Lethal. Constant pandering to New Japan and its stars, lack of build for its own stars, questionable booking decisions, questionable dealings when it came to talent and letting them go, little went right this year and its going to take them years to rebuild i'd say). HM: TNA, AAA

Worst Gimmick: Curt Hawkins (what kind of poor excuse for a gimmick is this, it gets x-pac heat, not sure if they intended that but it sucks beyond belief)

Worst Feud of the Year: Rusev vs Ziggler (who thought this was a good idea to do this again)

Worst Match: Rebel v Shelly Martinez (don't watch this match, its bad, like minus 5 stars bad)

AJ Styles has easily had the best year in wrestling. Made a huge debut at the royal rumble, had great feuds with Jericho, Cena, Reigns and Ambrose, every match is 4 or 5 stars from him and he is doing it all as a heel. After the way they started with him, he quickly made WWE take notice and took the top spot.

I voted Other. Other is Charlotte. AJ Styles would have been my second choice.

I was trying to think of anyone in WWE (that's pretty much all I watch so that's my talent pool to choose from) that has been on par with AJ and Charlotte is the only one that comes close. She was a little rocky to start the year though so I went with AJ.

Full disclosure: I don't have access to Lucha Underground and I don't watch NJPW, but I have watched TNA for a few months and just started watching ROH too recently. I'm mostly a WWE guy, though.

Wrestler of the year - Styles
Most outstanding wrestler - Styles
Feud of the Year - Sasha/Charlotte
Tag Team of the Year - The Revival
Most improved wrestler - The Miz
Best on Interviews - Eli Drake (only recently started watching TNA, but I like this guy a lot)
Most Charismatic - Nakamura
Best Technical Wrestler - Styles
Best Brawler - Samoa Joe
Best High-Flyer/Luchador - Dumb answer 'cause I'm blanking, but my favourite flying spots have probably belonged to Charlotte
Most Underrated - Tyler Breeze
Promotion of the Year - NXT
Best TV Show - Takeover Toronto
Match of the Year - Revival vs DIY
Rookie of the Year - Braun Stroman (like the monster gimmick and the mic work is decent)
Best Non-Wrestler - Maryse (The Miz' rise coincides with her comeback)
Best Commentator - Cory Graves
Best Major Wrestling Show - NXT (still holds up better than most)
Best Booker - Sounds like whoever writes Lucha Underground belongs here
Promoter of the Year - No clue
Best Gimmick - Broken Matt Hardy (HM: List of Jericho)

Worst Commentator - David Otunga (any other answer is wrong)
Most Overrated - Adam Cole (I keep hearing everybody wants him and I see that he's good, but I haven't spotted greatness yet)
Worst Major Wrestling Show - I remember hating Clash of Champions
Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic - "philanthropy is the new marketing" or whatever Stephanie's quote was a few years back is becoming way too apparent. Your company doing good shouldn't make me cringe as a viewer. With all of the Susan B Komen stuff, WWE has managed to turn cancer babyface.
Worst Television Show - Raw (especially pre-draft)
Worst Match of the Year - Lesnar/Orton
Worst Feud of the year - Reigns/Rusev (no feud was booked more backwards than this)
Worst Promotion of the Year - TNA (ownership stuff was just too much)
Worst Gimmick - I'm going to say Reigns. Everything about him is backwards: A tough guy that needs to wear a bulletproof vest. A cool guy that comes off as awkward or swarmy in any interview. A good guy that tormented a competitor's wife to start a feud. etc.

Wrestler of the year and most outstanding wrestler: AJ Styles
Feud of the year: Cena-Styles gets the edge for me over Sasha-Charlotte because I thought Sasha-Charlotte ebbed and flowed whereas I think Cena-Styles was consistently very good.
Tag team of the year: Tough one between New Day and The Revival. Its a really good example of your decision being based on what criteria you're putting highest value on. I'd probably go New Day by the slimmest of margins.
Most improved wrestler: Alexa Bliss. I've been wrong about Alexa at pretty much every turn. When she debuted I didn't see anything in her. When she was with Blake and Murphy I thought her charisma shone through. But adding spice to otherwise bland teams was what her career was going to be. Then when she got called up I thought she was a year away. And now she's got a very long and very good career ahead of her.
Best on interviews: Matt Hardy. Jericho and Owens are great promos but I feel like there promos have been like the equivalent of crappy fast food. I listen to them, I enjoy it and then an hour later I forgot what they said and I'm certainly not more interested in whatever match or program they have. As bizarre as it is, Matt Hardy's interviews make me more interested in whatever program and match he has coming up.
Most charismatic: Nakamura
Best technical wrestler: AJ Styles
Best brawler: Samoa Joe and Kevin Owens tie on this one
Best high flier: Angelico
Most underrated: Cedric Alexander and Rusev. I think Cedric's got big time potential, IMO easily the highest ceiling of anyone in that division. And Rusev should be a top heel.
Promotion of the year: NXT. This was a hard one to answer as I don't think any promotion has been great. I said NXT because I feel like I've seen very little bad from them.
Best tv show: NXT. Same as above. Smackdown would've won in a walk if we were looking solely at post-draft. But it was a total throwaway show before the draft.
Match of the year: Sami Zayn-Nakamura
Rookie of the year: I don't have one. Everyone I can think of are guys that I've known about for more than a year, they've just gotten to a bigger stage in the last year.
Best non-wrestler: Stephanie McMahon (I'm trying to get a job). But honestly, if they go down the direction they seem to she won't be on this list much longer, but I think Renee Young is so good in this all-purpose interviewer/host role and I'm afraid they're killing that by making her just another character.
Best commentator: Mauro. He can be a little too schticky at times and Graves is entertaining, but there's no one better at calling a big match right now.
Best Major Wrestling Show: NXT Takeover Dallas (The Joe-Balor match has grown on me)
Best booker-Chris DeJoseph
Best promoter-Heyman
Best gimmick-Heath Slater during the period between not getting drafted and winning the title. He was gold during that time. Once they won the title, the gimmick wore thin on me very quickly.
Worst commentator-David Otunga
Most overrated-Another tough one. A month ago, TJ Perkins would've been the easy answer and he's still I guess my answer. I think Reigns deserves consideration because while I think the root of his issues are that he's miscast as a face, I don't think he's main event caliber on the mic as a face or heel. And Sheamus will always be a contender for this award in my eyes.
Worst major wrestling show-ROH's weekly show. I respect how fiscally responsible ROH is, but they go out of there way seemingly to have a TV show that's skippable.
Most disgusting promotional tactic-I feel like there isn't one that jumps out at me. Sasha using Eddie seems more eye-rolling than anything else. And WWE getting a hand cramp from all the patting themselves on the back they do is pretty gross but they've been doing it forever. Last year they gave the slammy award to John Cena for his charity work which was pretty gross. I'm not sure this qualifies but I'd probably go with Joey Styles going into business for himself and explicitly going against what Gabe Sapolsky told him to do.
Worst match of the year: Dana Brooke-Bayley, the match where Dana Brooke was clearly supposed to have her feet on the ropes but pinned her too far away and got a clean pin
Worst feud of the year: Reigns-Rusev. I wonder if Vince really hates Rusev on a personal level because that seems to be the best explanation for this feud and his current feud. He seems to think we all hate Rusev so much that you can do all these horrible things to him and we'll cheer that guy because he's against Rusev.
Worst promotion of the year: TNA. Creatively I'd go with ROH but TNA has been such a dumpster fire in every way other than their creative that I have to go with them.
Worst gimmick: The drifter

The actual WON awards came out.

Styles won Wrestler of the year and outstanding wrestler of the year (makes sense he was that good, also apparently Naito, Okada and Omega were 2,3 and 4 and the next WWE guy was 9th which shows how far ahead AJ Styles is right now).

Riddle somehow won ROY and Most Improved (only beat the Miz for Most Improved though by 6 votes).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wrestling_Observer_Newsletter_awards

Otunga won Worst Commentator of the year and Mauro the best (even though to be honest, he hasn't been as good this year at all, mind you miles ahead of everyone else but it feels like his colleagues drag him down, aside from the 205 crew). Maybe someone will notice, then again it is WWE so he probs would become lead commentator.
