Anderson Paak - Malibu

Chance The Rapper - Coloring Book

My two favorite projects of a really great year!

Saw Anderson Paak back in October at Freakfest in Madison, I was a little bit too intoxicated but I loved hearing his music with the band live.

Gotta throw these Ye tracks as a few of my favorites of 2016. I still remember the day "No More Parties in LA" and "Real Friends" dropped. My god!

One of my most played tracks as well. I loved the album too.

I'm a huge Kid Cudi fan since 2008, the new album has a lot of good vintage sounding Cudi tracks. Still wish Emile and him would link back up in the studio that would be amazing. What I love about Cudi compared to Ye and Drake is he continues to innovate and work with his sound compared to Drake and Ye who chase the sound and collabs that are hot at the moment.

I'm a few months late on this track, but it is catchy as hell if you like indie synth-pop

On a hardcore kick. One of the smoother Glassjaw tracks but it kicks ass anyway.

I've been in NYC with the fam (the fam, not our poster fam) for the past week and haven't had much chance to post. Sorry :P Here's some more of my top of the year list, which I will try to wrap up by the end of the year :)

11. Someone That Loves You (HONNE, ft. Izzy Bizu)

This indie-electropop song became an ear worm for me a couple months ago and has been in consistent rotation since. The star, without a doubt, is Izzy Bizu's wonderfully curious voice. As she's singing through the first verse, it's both vulnerable and optimistic. HONNE's piece is much less interesting, but doesn't detract much from the overall song.

10. The Less I Know The Better (Tame Impala)

While I am not the biggest Tame Impala fan, I still like them quite a bit. This track of theirs is my favorite yet, and the accompanying video is so damn interesting. It in total feels like it should be a late 80s/early 90s coming of age movie. But yet, somehow, the song is much more mature than that. The song really peaks is the closing verse, as the character is reconciling not being with his love interest. And the final lyric of the song, repeated, is one of my favorites of the year: 'Come on, Superman. Say your stupid line.'

9. In A Blackout (Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam)

If I were to revisit this list a year or two from now, I suspect both this song and the next would likely move into my top 5 when considering longevity in my personal catalogue. I was distressed when I learned of Rostam leaving Vampire Weekend, one of my favorite alternative bands, but if he can pump out music like he has on this record with Hamilton Leithauser (as opposed to his poor solo work), I can live with his decision. This song is of Apple commercial fame, now. They picked a good one.

8. Modern Act (Cloud Nothings)

Cloud Nothings are so goddamned interesting; I am ecstatic for their album next year. I have been a fan since "Stay Useless", but I love that they've gone more hi-fi in their new music. They still have edge and style, but it feels more put together which I appreciate. You can have your cake and eat it, too (see: Hot Hot Heat). I especially love this song in 2016, and at the time it came out when I was fearful of a full year long of crappy music.

7. Life Itself (Glass Animals)

Glass Animals' sophomore effort was the soundtrack to my summer, highlighted by this track. It's uniquely Glass Animals and incredibly fun. The uptempo beat was wonderful for a summer hit (as opposed to Gooey and Black Mambo, both of which I also love). I just don't know how you can't love this: 'Thought that I was Northern Camden's own Flash Gordon; sonic-ray gun, gonna be a superstar. I can't get a job so I live with my mom...' The dichotomy is just so **** fantastic :D

6. Trouble (Cage the Elephant)

Cage are an old favorite of mine, and this song of theirs was my favorite since Shake Me Down six years ago. Early in their career, I never would have expected this song out of Cage. After Cigarette Daydreams I got hopeful - they weren't there yet (I was not a fan of 'Daydreams, but saw where they could go). This one did it for me. I also appreciate the throwback to mentioning the wicked get to rest.

I'm currently trying to decide whether I want to give my money to Spotify or Apple Music. Anyone have a recommendation?

I'm firmly in the Apple ecosystem and I'd still easily go with Spotify. It's supported on more devices, and you're far more likely to run into Spotify playlists online when people want to share music.

The biggest reason, though, is Spotify Weekly. It scans your library, analyzes your listening habits, then curates a playlist of 30 songs every week from stuff you probably don't know but would probably like. It's SCARY how accurate it is with my tastes.

If I had to choose one streaming service across all mediums, it would be Spotify and it isn't close.

What he said. I had both but I'm also in the Apple ecosystem so Apple Music makes the most sense. But for discovery, etc, I would choose Spotify. Easier to navigate as well. I'm guessing Apple will close the gap at some point (and they are starting too) but not yet.

Thanks fellas. The Spotify app is definitely easier to use than Apple Music. The only thing that has really drawn me to Apple Music is that their selection seems to be bigger and I run in to fewer instances of not finding specific music that I'm looking for. I know that they both have ways of loading files from your own libary, but this has been easier for me to figure out with the Apple app.

5. Light Up (Mutemath)

I've been waiting many users for a new Mutemath album. I didn't love the album itself, but the lead single stuck with me throughout the year for a long time early in the year when I was really struggling to find something to listen to. It was the same great electronica-laced alt they've become known for.

4. Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance) (SIlversun Pickups)

I didn't really hear this track until Spring 2016, though I've come to find out it was released in 2015 (too late for me to revise :P). It took a few months for it to catch on with me, but it eventually became an ear worm. Nikki shines through, and makes me wish she was featured more often. It's a somber melody, and I think a sad song; one of many on my list (coincidentally) about death.

Bonus! Radio (Sylvan Esso)

This one came out after I had already assembled my list. It would not be my #3 or #4, but I did want to include it as it hadn't been posted yet. A snarky, tongue-in-cheek song about record companies making music for the radio, production, consumerism, and money. The lyrics are pretty brilliant, and it's exactly 3:30 long.

3. Past Lives (Local Natives)

The lead single to follow-up on one of my all-time favorite records (2013's Hummingbird), when Past Lives came out my hype for their new album was soaring. It became tempered as more of their new tracks were released, unfortunately, but I still do love Past Lives.

2. The Names (Baio)

Vampire Weekend managed to produce a lot of good music this year without even releasing new music; Rostam in partnership with Hamilton Leithauser, and early in the year Chris Baio had an impressive record in his solo debut. Sister of Pearl was pretty good (2015 release), and there's a few other solid songs with his unique sound, but The Names is the easy standout. I think the lyrics describe a relationship between two people struggling with depression, maybe social anxiety. The partner's trying to take him out of his shell, and he's having a harder time with it, but he's trying to change.

1. Casual Party (Band of Horses)

This is not only my #1 of the year, but also one of my favorite tracks of recent years - Band of Horses came back from their 4-year hiatus with a bang. This song 'rocks'. But it's full of meaning behind the rock, and it's not pulling any punches. I think again the subject here struggles with some mental health issues, probably somewhere in the range of social anxiety ("...where's the door? I can't locate it, where's it located?"). They want nothing to do with the social conventions for small talk (detailed extensively in the second verse, which is hilariously awesome). I've interpreted this a couple ways over the course of listening to the song: both that the subject thinks these topics are mundane and pointless altogether, but also that s/he may recognize them as normal but just that he struggles with them and the setting. I eventually settled on the latter, but either way, it's a point well made and really gives you a view into their perspective ("It's all or nothing, all or nothing, so you really got something to lose"). This song has been in my daily Spotify playlist of new music for 8 months now.
