Again, it seems to be a deep draft, meaning that there will be good-decent players available into the late teens. Moreover, there appear to be no LeBrons in the draft this year--i.e., no transcendental, franchise-changing talents worth tanking for. Just a lot of good players. Accordingly, at least to me, this seems the perfect time to try to win.
What's the point of trying to "win" now (when we have no chance of getting past the Cavs, let alone GSW)? As the 76ers and Twolves keep demonstrating, you can't build winners just through the draft (unless, say, you luck into a LeBron or a Duncan). Good but not great young players--and both teams have a number of good players--do **** without veteran leadership. You need a balance between good youth and good vets, with at least one superstar (more than one in recent years) on the roster.
The problem is how to get those good vets. As I've written before, having "gobs of cap space" but no recent winning pedigree is fool's gold in today's NBA. The best players, the one's that can really make a difference, are going to get the same amount of money wherever they go. Thanks to the Internet, players no longer need "big markets" to make their "brand." Winning is
much more important, particularly winning in the playoffs. That's why teams like the 76ers, Twolves, Nets and Knicks haven't been able to even get interviews with--let alone sign--major free agents for years. It's a Catch 22--teams seeking to rebuild now need to win at least enough to show potential to free agents (but at the same time lose enough to get good draft picks). By signing the current mix of young and old talent, Phil has tried to do just this. It's a risk, certainly...but a calculated one.
Though as the absence of Rose recently showed, one serious injury to Rose or to Melo or to KP and we'll be a lottery team...most likely high lottery. We just don't have the defense in place to compete without offensive contributions from all three. And frankly, given their ages/medical histories, there's a good chance either Rose or Melo will miss substantial time later this season.
I just hope we are good enough long enough to demonstrate potential to good FAs before the inevitable injury happens.
RIP magnumt--you're literally why I'm still here on these boards.
RIP The Hater--keep up the good fight in the great beyond.
