I was on Melo's side when I saw the original quote on reddit "Melo replies no way when asked about Karl's book", until I actually saw the quote. This doesnt sound made up guys...It doesnt make Carmelo any worse of a scorer or that he doesnt care about the knicks, but if this is true it really makes Melo seem selfish, he probably could have at least one ring if he gave it his all on Defense . Same exact thing goes for JR, he had the potential to be a career 20ppg guy but it seems like Karl aired him out too. I can see why these guys are salty about it. It takes balls for George Karl to put out a tell all book.
George Karl is highly critical of Carmelo in a new book, saying that when Denver Nuggets traded Anthony to the Knicks in 2011 it was like "popping a blister."

"Carmelo was a true conundrum for me in the six years I had him," Karl wrote. "He was the best offensive player I ever coached. He was also a user of people, addicted to the spotlight and very unhappy when he had to share it."

Karl's memoir, "Furious George," is set to be released in January. It includes several unflattering comments about Anthony as a player and a person.

"He really lit my fuse with his low demand of himself on defense," Karl said. "He had no commitment to the hard, dirty work of stopping the other guy.

Carmelo Anthony: Players shouldn't vote for All-Star Game

"My ideal — probably every coach's ideal — is when your best player is also your leader. But since Carmelo only played hard on one side of the ball, he made it plain he couldn't lead the Nuggets, even though he said he wanted to. Coaching him meant working around his defense and compensating for his attitude."

Karl added: "The volume of questions about Carmelo eventually wore me down. Sometimes I got so sick of talking about him that I'd just throw up my hands and say: 'I don't know what he is and I don't care.' "

Before the Knicks played the Orlando Magic on Thursday night, Anthony responded "no way" when asked to address Karl's book. Earlier this month, Knicks president Phil Jackson angered Anthony by saying on a television show that Anthony stalls the offense by holding the ball.

Karl admitted that the reason Anthony forced his way out of Denver is because head coach and star player had "a little conflict bubbling."

"I want as much effort on defense — maybe more — as on offense," Karl wrote. "That was never going to happen with Melo, whose amazing ability to score with the ball made him a star but didn't make him a winner. Which I pointed out to him. Which he didn't like."

The Nuggets eventually traded Anthony and Chauncey Billups to the Knicks for Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov and draft picks.

"We won this trade, definitely,'' Karl wrote.

Karl was also critical of two former Denver Nuggets, J.R. Smith and Kenyon Martin, who eventually were teammates with Anthony in New York. Karl compared Smith, Martin and Anthony to "the spoiled brats you see in junior golf and junior tennis."

Karl even used the word "posse" to describe some of the issues with Smith. That's the same word that Jackson used last month to describe LeBron James' friends and business associates.

Karl said Smith had "a huge sense of entitlement, a distracting posse, his eye always on the next contract and some really unbelievable shot selection."

Karl also said that Smith's father, Earl Sr., "urged his son to shoot the ball and keep shooting it from the very moment I put him in the game.''

"When we traded J.R. in 2011, I was disappointed that I hadn't helped a clearly talented player advance his game more.”

How does it "take balls" to release a book like this? Calling Melo, Jr, K-Mart spoiled brats and commenting on K-Mart and Melo not growing up with a father is not something any coach or person who was in a high ranking position should say. He's acting like he wants to stay in the spotlight and is willing to say whatever he can to do it. This guy has had issues with every high level player he's coached and HE'S in the right here...? He's the equivalent of an internet bully hiding behind a computer screen. When you can't hear both sides of the story, you don't believe the first one you hear. :-?

I assume from the above you didn't watch Melo on the Nuggets?

First, Kmart has responded that Karl didn't coach defense. The Nuggets were a run and gun team.

Second, Melo could have at least one ring if Karl wasn't such a loser of a coach. In the WCF, Kobe commented that Melo was playing tough defense on him. The Nuggets had a chance in the series. However, Karl overplayed bad players like AC, whom he had man crushes on. Plus he had zero inbound plays, and there were some costly inbound turnovers.

Karl is just a bitter old man, who by all accounts, is a terrible human being. I have yet to see any former players come to his defense.

Edit: If I remember correctly, Karl had this switching-WTF-is-going-on defensive scheme. It was awesome.

Seriously

The more attention this thing gets, the more interest it will gain and watch how many people will then want to go get this book. This is a classic PR move, Karl trying to cash in on this. Don't fall into the trap

Next time they ask him about George Karl, he should just reply with "Who?". That's it, like he's that irrelevant. Leave it at that

Yeah what I am more interested on is how can you be this calm and collected of a poster yet lose your shİt after one great game of Melo

We were losing to the Pacers man, I was heated. I've calmed down :)

You guys know that writers read RealGm, you've noticed this.

If you want to force Karl into an apology or stand up for Kenyon and Melo. Say it loud on the General Board and somehow it'll get out.

It sucks to have ESPN go after Phil all the dam time and others get away with worse on the Knicks.

Where are the New York beat writers when you need them?

Also love the grilling of a guy for doing what Phil Jackson already did. And then to paint him a racist? Hahahaha.. George Karl??? lol... Why would a racist decide to take up decades of employment working with people he fundamentally hated because of the color of their skin?

He's a crotchety old man.. so was his mentor Dean Smith.. and so was Bobby Knight... and Larry Brown.. are they racists too?

He ain't going to apologize.. he's been saying a lot of those things for years. He's said them on ESPN for christs sake. In America you can say whatever the hell you want just be prepared to handle the repercussions. I'm pretty sure George Karl knew exactly what the repercussions were going to be when he said all this stuff to his biographer.

Ibra I know you haven't really cared for Melo in recent memory but this is too much of a contrarian even for you.

Return to New York Knicks
