Blacks couldn't go to these big universities. That's why HBCU's are around. You're talking 50 years ago Abe.

Blacks weren't allowed to play basketball when Karl was coaching?

Even if he was a jerk and was difficult to coach.. what is so groundbreaking about this type of stuff? We're talking about young kids who are brand new to being rich and famous. And yes, maybe some of them grew up without a father figure and need great coaching to become great professionals. That's why they're payin you millions to be the coach, Jack!

All I can say is that Melo has grown up quite a bit, even in just the 6 seasons he's been a Knick. He still holds the ball at times, and he's still not a great defender, but Knicks fans know how far Melo has come as a basketball player and as a man, and he doesn't need to be ashamed of where he came from or how he got here. No matter what George Karl or anyone on the internet says about the guy, he's a success story, and Karl knows that.

I'm only 30 years old and I look at kids in their early to mid 20s and see them as babies. I think back to when I was 19-24 and can't imagine how much I would have F'd up had someone given me 40 million dollars and told me I could have practically any girl I wanted. As a fan, I would be annoyed if I learned any player was being a distraction or getting in the way of the team's success, and I've even accused Melo of doing exactly that in the past. But as a middle-aged man, an experienced professional, and a highly-paid head coach in the NBA hired to be a teacher and a manager of egos.. you should know and understand what you're up against going into a job like that, and would only attack a former player - years later after he's turned 32 and has a wife and kids of his own - if you were desparate to sell a book.

That's exactly it.. but I wouldn't call it desperate. Isn't he still getting paid by ESPN?

Greedy and shameless might be better words than desperate.

I just love me some old grumpy coaches. This conversation is really a basketball fraternity conversation so for me that's how I view it. I don't read into race.. George Karl has his place in the fraternity cemented. This is an old grump coach throwing kids that drove him crazy under the bus.

But the other truth is also.. it was Karl that cost the Nuggets a chance at a championship more than it was Melo with two of the most awfully designed in bounds plays in NBA history.

You've been here a while.. let's reminisce about the time I was the boards biggest Melo Stan. Good times.. I should post some stuff from back then.

George Karl: 27 years as head coach = 0 rings.

George Karl: Career losing playoff record of 62-83 (.427%).

Who is George Karl to criticize anyone?

Especially a future 1st ballot Hall of Famer of Melo's caliber who's an NCAA Champion, NBA Scoring Champion, 9x NBA All-Star, 1st & only 3x U.S.A Gold Medal Olympian and will go down as one of the greatest NBA Pure Scorers of All-Time (on pace to crack the top 10 in All-Time scoring and with good health, possibly top 5).

But yea. Right. I guess George Karl can hang on to his "whopping" 9 coach of the month awards after 27 years of coaching. Laughable.

And wasn't George Karl an NBA player from 1973-1978? How did his little 5 year NBA playing career go? He's a sad, angry & bitter person.

Can Karl be racist and yet coach blacks? Yes.
Do you think when integration was enforced all those coaches were happy? Just an example.

Karl is the one running his mouth.

You don't get it.. he coached mostly young black men for over 30 years of his life. His fundamental hate for them because of their skin color was something he could look past in order to keep coaching them? And why didn't anyone ever in those 30 years working with young and old black men ever accuse him of being a racist before?

I believe it's been brought up with him before.

So you're saying if he made a bunch of negative comments about anyone, like KP or Lin back when he played for us, you'd be here caping for Karl?

That's highly unlikely. I'm sorry I disagree. Why would a guy that's a racist coach a bunch of people of the race he supposedly "hates" to success all while those people are making way more money than him? He could've done a bunch of other things for a living.

Abe your argument is weak if you are going to defend George is not a racist. You are using that because he works with Blacks for x amount of years means he would not be racist cause why would he work with people he don't like. Well last time I remember....Coaches CONTROL the team. He is the head banana when it comes to pecking order. What he says go(overseer) So yes a person who is racist can still be a coach and it works the way he would like it too. You acting like Karl was under somebody black being told what to do. These same black people that he controlled made him rich and famous...dont see how that can't super seed any hidden thoughts. Who cares there is no reports of him being racist. Donald Sterling was racist as **** for decades, and it only came out when it came out. If you going to argue the dude is not racist find a better argument than saying he worked(controlled) blacks for 30 years...how can he be racist.

When you wake up PM a source. I don't remember. I know he's tough ass coach who was hard as hell on his players but I don't think I've ever heard him called a racist. Sleep tight sugar.

Nobody wins in this debate. George Karl is an Azzho.. Melo has grown up and turned into a upstanding citizen.. Karl has to get some credit for that too.
