Jersey retirements

Post#1 » by NEM » Fri Dec 23, 2016 2:53 am

Since Shaq got his number retired in Miami tonight, it got me thinking "why don't we have any number retired?"

We have certainly had our fair share of franchise players come through Orlando and in my opinion (as well as some other posters on here), their numbers should be retired.

Shaq: won ROY here, lead us to the top of the league in only our 6th season in the league. 4x all star, HOFer, all NBA team while here. Yeah he bolted but he was a FA, so he excercised his right. It's been 20 years since then. I think it's time to move on and retire 32, especially since Miami did it. He was there for 2.5 years...

T-Mac: led the league in scoring two times while here, lead us to the playoffs 3/4 years while having the likes of Garrett, declercq, Vaughn, and Lue starting alongside him. His best years came here and he's headed to the HOF. He wanted out because there was no end in sight to the mediocrity. I'd bet that if he had a little bit of help (and if weisbrod wasn't an asshat), he would have stayed. Same as Shaq, let bygones be bygones and retire 1

Penny: this one is questionable because his numbers don't pop out like mac and shaqs do, but he was largely responsible for our ascension atop the east in the 90's. I'd dually retire 1 for him and tmac.

Anderson: id say most fans will agree with this one. Played here 10 years, second leading scorer in franchise history, our first ever draft pick... yeah he missed some FT's in one game... 20 years ago... can't hold grudges forever. Retire 25.

I'd also consider retiring 15 for hedo, maybe 14 for jameer when that time comes, and definitely 12 when Dwight retires.

We have to start building a history as a franchise or we will forever be known as a clown organization... we are 28 years in with NOTHING to show for it... no banners, no retired numbers, nothing... Miami is a year older than us and they have 3 championships, and 3 or 4 retired numbers and soon to be 2 or 3 more when Wade, LBJ, and bosh call it quits... Toronto is 6-7 years younger and they will undoubtedly retire 15 for Vince... grizzlies will likely have both gasols and Randolph up there... Minnesota will have KG.

It's time to honor our past and build a history...
I live rent free in your head. You know who you are :D

Not changing this sig until Magic win a championship. Started 6/26/2015.

When the dust has settled...and I mean seriously settled...Dwight is the closest guy that deserves to his jersey retired.

The Magic should retire whatever number is the one to lead us to our first championship. The rest are fine on the "Magic Hall of Fame". Save the rafters for championships and the ones that lead us there.

I will always say no to Nick Anderson

Good player but far from a guy that needs to have his jersey retired

We were an expansion team and he was here for awhile, so of course he's up there across the leaderboards

Didn't make a single all-star game

I would never watch a magic game again if they retired his jersey. Something about values, loyalty, morals.

Dwight deserves it. I don't care about the exit. Both sides were at fault.

No one as we don't have a championship and have had no players that are synonymous with the team like Reggie Miller, Stockton and Malone were with their teams.

Only Jameer Nelson and Nick Anderson provided a meaningful career to Orlando. And neigh of those guys deserves to create a retired jersey.

None is my answer as well.

We haven't had a single superstar that left on good terms, so I don't know why Dwight gets singled out. I hope Magic fans get over it someday. He gave us some great years.

When you look a thing accomplishments as a member of the Magic, Dwight Howard is the top of the list. Don't get me wrong I have no problem not retiring anyone's jersey. This debate has only come up because Reggie Miller (he of the ability to over-exaggerate every second word that comes out of his mouth) keeps saying 'you're up Orlando' or words to that effect re retiring Shaq's jersey.

I don't like the retired jersey thing at all except when it's completely obvious.

All of the players above are fringe worthy but not completely obvious imo.

What I like better than retiring a jersey is a ring-of-honor type thing.

Most of the players listed above would easily qualify for that .... and everyone's happy. Lol

I'd be happy if you gave the Bucs forum some attention. You have not posted in there in almost a year. I've asked to be co-mod since you are never around, but I can't be one with warnings and a suspension in the past.

I don't think any of them deserve to get their jersey retired. It has to be whoever brings home a championship.
