I remember last year he was playing so well off the bench that he nearly had a run as a starter.. I did root for TJ and I was hoping that this year with Sergio Rodriguez as a starter he could perform even better to potentially get a run as a starter but doesn't look like it.

When he comes in he still get couple of steals and play solid defense as usual but offensively sometimes I'm wondering what is this guy doing... Turnovers, bad passes and crazy wild shots.. C'mon TJ you better then that

BTW his game against Detroit was fantastic defensively and offensively....

Crazy shots? Guy rarely shoots let alone taking "crazy shots".

Yeah... crazy shots and turnovers seem like an odd criticism of TJ.

Yes, his biggest problem is that he doesn't shoot even when he's open, which hurts the rest of the offense. He needs to learn how to hit an open 3 this offseason if he wants to stick around as a bench contributor in this league.

he's not an NBA player

at absolute best, he's a 3rd stringer who gets 2 minutes a game

There's so much to appreciate with Tj but he's just not a good NBA player. Bayless and Henderson are good NBA reserves and I don't see Tj ever being able to consistently make plays in the NBA.

McConnell can be a career NBA 3rd PG....He just needs to improve his shot IQ and shooting ability. His game would possibly better fit on a team like Houston or GS where he could come in for a few minutes, defend and just kick out to an open shooter.

Here, its a little more magnified because we lack quality perimeter scoring. He defends well, but on offense he simply looks for teammates to a fault, and we simply don't have a roster capable of creating a shot most of the time.

Im not a very big TJ fan on this roster, but I certainly think he could find a spot on other rosters as a 13-15th man.

dorkestra wrote:Like I said I like the guy and he's definitely easy to root for. I just think that compared to backup point guards on some of the top teams, he is definitely a bit outmatched. it can be overcome, but it's certainly not a strength on the court, despite his intangible contributions. That's why I said "ideally" he is your third string point guard.

He is a good defender, but a poor offensive player, and he isn't a great shooter.

If he could consistently take and make 3's, while providing the same defense then he would be a valuable player to most teams.

I like TJ, he's one of the very few guards on this team that tries to play defense. If he had any semblance of an outside shot, he would certainly be fine as a back up. I think he just needs to start letting it go when he's open.

He can't shoot. I've never seen an 'NBA player' shoot 3's by catapaulting shots up like a female would... due to a lack of strength. The guy really should not be seeing court time at all... and hopefully won't be when Simmons comes in.

If he wants to stay in the league he has to work on that 3point shot. What did he work on this past summer?"..The release is slow and akward, I find it odd that he didn't add to his game. He still could be a 'Kevin olive' type but it depend on his shooting...

He's young, plays average defense and sees well the floor, he isn't that bad as a shooter the problem is that he doesn't even try it. Also, don't complain and is a good locker room guy...he's the perfect 3rd string at the PG, unlike Sergio Rodriguez, who will be gone after the year with Bayless and Simmons recovered because isn't a great fit next to Simmons, he needs the ball in his hands to be effective and can't play even average defense.
When this account gets more "And1"s than posts written ...then my life will be complete. And maybe it will be the right time to hang it up. (Achieved on 2017-2018 season)...but still here.

Its not a lack of strength its his mechanics. His form is very similar to Andre Miller and like Miller his shot is very effective from mid range but is poor from 3.

wow. I originally voted no. But I guess 2 years ago this was a different team and TJ was just another scrappy white kid trying to live the dream. Didn't realize he was gonna become our Delly/Patty Mills.

I guess there could be worse options to have at PG but let's put it this way

When this team is going to the playoffs and actually capable of winning a series, I really don't want to see TJ playing a lot of minutes.

I'm cool with him being a bench player who can come in every now and then and at least put effort out on the defensive end and set up other players on offense, but he is not a scorer in the NBA, and not a starting point guard in the NBA.

I love the kid, love his effort, love his attitude, but let's not all become prisoners or the moment and think he is somehow a big part of our franchise's future because he hit a buzzer beater over Carmelo and put up decent stats during the dog days of the NBA season

I already proclaimed him Brett's Delly/Patty Mills. Everyone move along.

Return to Philadelphia 76ers
