Funny how a guy named Laimbeer would bitch about how a player went out. Big tough Billy Laimbeer up and quit on the team 11 games in to his last season. Just abruptly retired because he didn't like how the team was looking 11 games in and he got his jersey retired.

Dennis Rodman's went nuts and was acting so bad we got a broken Sean Elliot for him who we had to trade for Billy Curley to get rid of. The Worm got his number retired.

Rip was by far and away our most consistent offensive threat his entire tenure here. He's the franchises all time leader in playoff scoring. He handled things very poorly at the end but as mentioned above so have two other all time great Pistons. So if you want to ignore Rip's contributions because he was an **** towards the end fine. Then you better be ready to say take down #10 and #40.

Laimbeer had lost his desire to compete and work ethic so he packed it in rather than continuing to cash checks. Rodman was kind of nuts at the end and you'd be free to question his number retirement based on that.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I'm not sure Rip really deserves to have his jersey retired, but there are worse choices. The Pistons have about as many retired jerseys as the Lakers, which seems wrong.

I hear you broheem.

Ive been with like 15 chicks in my lifetime. My friend has also been with like 15 chicks. Mine are like 3s and 4s. His is like 8s and 9s.

But dammit, my 3's and 4s are just as special to me than his 8s and 9s. Cuz like anyone who sleep with me gets a special place in my heart.

How does that make you better than the Lin, Gallo, and Wil fans who root for them over NY?

Gotta admit that post is gold!

1 - 15 people in your lifetime?

Seems a little low if you're banging 3s & 4s....

And seems a little high if you're not the type to play the field

2 - 3s & 4s are just as special to you as his 8s & 9s...only if you married one, son!

Otherwise they were cannon fodder, practice, drunken escapades or easy targets

Your posts are actually really hilarious, nothing like the usual fans that come to another team's board to post a wonky trade.

I don't like Rip. I never liked Rip. I remember his awful behavior the last couple of years, certainly, but the main reason is because he was the only non-elite defender on an awesome defensive team, and his effort on that end pissed me off. He got better, mind you, but a guy with tireless legs that took plays off defensively rubbed me the wrong way. The whole team imploded after 2006, of course, but Rip was the ringleader of the rebellion against the coaching staff, and that's just unacceptable.

That said, we got a title, and he hit the most shots. I'm OK with the number retirement, because it's obvious the Pistons take the "big hall" approach to retiring jerseys, and Rip was important. Still don't like him, though.

The revisionist history to bash Rip is hilarious. The team imploded in the 08-09 season. Of our core guys Rip (after Ben left) was the last of them to take nights off. Sheed, Chauncey and Tay were notorious for "flipping the switch". Rip and Dice were the only Pistons to show up in the Celtic series in 08. Chauncey was not an elite defender. Just because he didn't get destroyed nightly like Chucky Atkins doesn't make him elite. In fact many nights Rip was the one switched on to the tougher cover in the back court.

He was an **** at the end. No doubt but he also got royally **** over by Dumars insanity. Let's look at the time line of the team's implosion.

1. Dumars fire Flip
2. Hires MICHAEL CURRY
3. Dumars wants to hand the keys of the franchise over to RODNEY STUCKEY so he trades Billups for Iverson.
4. The Iverson Rip back court isn't working so Curry benches Rip in favor of Rodney Stuckey without informing him.
5. The Suckey and Iverson backcourt is a disaster too.
6. Because we play better with Rip on the floor he gets the starting job back from Iverson.
7. The Canswer quits on the team 6 games before the playoffs.

Image

8. Curry is fired and replaced with Kuester.
9. Dumars uses the cap space created by dumping Sheed, Chauncey, Dice, Afflalo and Amir Johnson to bring in BEN GORDON, DNP-CV, and Chris Wilcox.
10. Dumars still thinks Stuckey is the future of the franchise.
11. Similar back court drama as the year before. Stuckey isn't a PG and can't play with Rip. Gordon got his fat contract and forgot how to shoot.
12. Second idiot coach in a row has no idea how to handle the situation or PT.
13. This crap goes on for a year and a half before the mutiny.
14. Rip, Ben, Tay, McGrady, Wilcox, Stuckey and Daye are the ones that skip the shoot around.
15. All this goes on while ownership is in limbo and Dumars literally does nothing to fix the teams issues.

Remember how angry you were as fans seeing this team go from the ECF to a laughing stock within a year? Remember how angry you got after Dumars doubled down on dumb after the 08-09 season? Now imagine you are a player on that team. Not only a player but the one who has been most negatively affected by all the coaching and management stupidity. How angry would you be having to live through all the idiocy EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. It justifiably got to him and especially after all he did for the team was incredibly disrespectful. I don't think you will find a single person that will attempt to justify how he responded to all this but this situation needs context. If you think Rip sabotaged the team out of nowhere you are an idiot. If you think he is the reason we were so bad for so long you are an idiot.

And to add to that:

Didn't Rip sign his extension like 4 days before Joe traded Chauncey?

Pretty sure that wasn't mentioned to Rip before he signed it

^Yes. In Rip's place I would've been pretty discontent too...he never said anything bad about the fans, all of his frustration was directed towards Joe D, Michael Curry and Kuester.
