The best rim protectors in the league

Graph is pointless. Blocks are the single most overrated stat. How many go into first row? How many are retained by offensive team? How many teams still score on the given block possession?

Better graph needs to take into consideration usage. I want to know who defends the rim most efficiently given the most opportunities.

Better graph needs to take into consideration possession change. I want to know who defends the rim and his defense leads to possession changes (and by proxy give some weight to defensive rebounds).

It's true that only the brave even try to challenge Gobert. Almost no one goes over him. They have to go around him or get to the rim sooner than he can come over. The best way to score on Gobert is a high floater.

Yeah, it doesn't happen often, but there's been a few guys who have figured out getting to the rim on Rudy. Lillard and Lowry have both had success at getting their shots at the rim over him this year. Mostly, players end up missing when they try shooting to avoid the block.

Kemba has had a lot of trouble with Gobert in the past, but he was able to make a couple nice shots at the rim against him this year and last by not worrying about trying to elevate or anything and just flicking the ball up at the rim at an opportune time while Gobert was moving his feet. Not saying Gobert still didn't have a huge impact or anything, but Kemba at least has figured out how to sneak in some occasional buckets against him.

Not sure what opportunities would be indicative of, I haven't done any additional research, but could assume that some rim protectors deter players from shooting on them or closer to the basket.

Yeah Kemba did score pretty well around him. Steph also can put up shots in a weird rhythm that throws Gobert off.

This is such a misleading title, the graph only displays the relationship of the effects blocks have on FG% near the rim not who is the best rim protector. Overall it does look like their is a weak relation between blocks and FG%, especially after obtaining ~1.7 blocks per 36, where the residuals are much larger than before, this could be the point at which true talent at protecting the rim come out, those who are hunting blocks versus those who are in position to change the shots.

It's true but look at the graph above. Porzingis and Embiid are still awesome rim protectors. Embiid's skill set is just scary.

And yeah, Embiid for a *first* year player is really impressive.
