Jabari vs Melo
So Jabari had a ton of Melo comparisons prior to the draft. Getting close to 2.5 seasons in for Jabari, just curious how people think those comparisons have held up? Here are their numbers on their 3rd season
Jabari per 36
22.1 ppg, 6.2 rbs, 2.6 ast, 50 FG%, 38 3pt%, 74 FT%, 54 eFG%, 17.4 FGA, 4.3 FTA, 1.6 TOs
Advanced stats
20.4 PER, 57 TS%, .149 WS/48, 26 USG%, 1.3 BPM
Melo per 36
26 ppg, 4.8 rbs, 2.6 ast, 48 FG%, 24 3pt%, 80 FT%, 49 eFG%, 19.2 FGA, 8.7 FTA, 2.7 TOs
Advanced stats
22 PER, 56 TS%, .153 WS/48, 32 USG%, 1.5 BPM
Their seasons are very similar, Melo averages 4 more points but he has the higher usage and put up more shots. One thing that probably helps Jabari's efficiency numbers is he is being groomed as the 2nd option and not as the franchise guy. Jabari definitely seems to be a more physical player than Melo even if the FTA don't back that up. Jabari seems to be living up to the comparisons and that is scary since he is their #2 behind Giannis.

Jabari will be more similar to Pierce, more physical player who can play within a team better - and probably will be a more effective player than Melo similar to how Pierce was.

Pierce minus the defense is where a lot of us are at. Jabari really needs to figure out help D to be the gun he could be.

Re: Jabari vs Melo
He is great around the rim, getting to the rim -- and is extremely strong and in a couple years he will be a monster on the offensive end next to Giannis. Him and Giannis will be an even bigger force in transition, which is why the Bucks need an athletic rim protector so bad. His shot is pretty solid now, and the little spacing we had last year is much improved much in part because Giannis & Jabari can hit a few outside shots per game now.
With that being said, he needs to vastly improve his defense. I would be happy if he was a below average defender.

Melo for sure I would still take.

Re: Jabari vs Melo
Jabari is a much more team orientated player and that sways this comparison in Jabaris direction for me. Ill echo the thought of Jabari reminding me of a Paul Pierce type of player rather than a Melo
Easier to slot Jabari on a championship team rather than a super ball dominant guy like Melo. Jabari is both a lot better off the ball and a better + more willing passer. Once Jabari starts getting these star calls at the rim that the refs always ignore, he will statistically surpass Carmelo.

Parker is more athletic than Melo and Pierce were also, or at the very least far more physical. Parker attacks the rim like he is Karl Malone sometimes, he doesn't seem to care about how much traffic there is.

Which makes his low FTA very weird. I think the Bucks fans have a legit gripe about the lack of calls Jabari gets. The dude gets some punishment on a nightly basis with how much he drives and attacks but rarely gets the calls.

Young melo had 160+ dunks one year, early on in his career, a number that trumps anything Lebron or wade have done. I think people forget his earlier aggressiveness some because you don't get that high of a number without jamming on people. Melo also used to be less of a jump shooter or his shot was less consistent. He used to be much more interior based, though Jabari probably has better athleticism.

It's infuriating, it's pretty obvious his size/strength puts him at a disadvantage in terms of officiating. He's got that LeBron-esque problem where he's so difficult attacking the basket that teams foul him on pretty much every drive, but because he's so strong/explosive he absorbs most of the contact and the refs subsequently don't call the foul. It really sucks watching smaller, skinnier forwards get calls on even the slightest touch, whereas Jabari regularly gets wrecked on drives with no calls. And it's all made worse by the fact that he doesn't flop, flail, try to sell contact in any way. Oh, and the fact that he plays for the Bucks lol

You sure? Melo might have been slightly less athletic (if at all) as a leaper... but Melo had a first step that Jabari could only dream of.

Re: Jabari vs Melo
Melo had a lightning first step, Jabari does too. Melo could leap, Jabari has cut his forehead dunking this season. (yeah he pulled the ring down slightly but it did still hit him a fair bit down his large head.)

I do think prime Melo's athleticism has become somewhat forgotten by many. With that said I do think that Jabari has the edge slightly on athleticism. He's obviously explosive as hell at the rim and for his size his first step is pretty ridiculous.

Re: Jabari vs Melo
Idk about comparisons but I absolutely love Jabari just does not GAF and attacks the rim like a young Barkley did in PHI.

Re: Jabari vs Melo
Underrated part of Jabari's skillset is his ball handling which is pretty ridiculous. Could probably count on one hand the number of guys his size in league history who had that type of handle.
Hopefully Jabari can get to average/above average one day on defense. He is more willing than Melo in that regard but his instincts are quite terrible.

Bucks fans: why are Jabari's impact stats so poor? Why are the Bucks so much better with Parker off the court? Is his defense that bad?

Yes it is that bad. He's getting the hang of staying with guys one on one at the perimeter but his help defense is just terrible some days. He lacks both understanding and concentration. He does have some solid games on D though so there's hope. He shouldn't ever share the court with Henson, just a soft bonehead.

because when he comes off giannis comes on, and giannis is le impact monster
that does happen some times, kidd staggers them a lot
But the main thing is his D, which is weird. Jabari has the fastest feet I've ever seen on a man this size, I mean seriously if he wasn't a basketball player he could be a tap dancer or something. So when he's on ball and he's focused, sometimes he's practically impossible to go around and he shows some amazing defensive flashes.
But when he's off ball, man... he literally

He could really use a legit rim protector at C to help make up for his defense, I'm just hoping that over the summer the coaches really help him and he works hard on it. Needs to get better awareness of what's going on, the game still needs to slow down a bit so there is still a little glimmer of hope he becomes average.
Jabari is actually better without Giannis and with Monroe, I believe. While Giannis is also better without him. So staggering their minutes more might produce some positive results. Important to note that LeBron/Kyrie also have better numbers when apart as well, so it's possible to make it work. Hoping in a few years Jabari becomes a monster on offense to help off-set his D.
