Not sure I agree with that. The Magic need 2 way players on the wing more than down low. Crowder is not a star, but he is a 2 way player who also brings a lot more consistent energy every night, which is something we need badly.
Nik does not even start for us now, so even though he has been quite good off the bench, having a starting wing who would slide AG down to PF or move him to a 6th man role would help us immensely.
Nik plays more minutes as a reserve than he does as a starter and has been worlds better than Biyombo outside of blocking shots. The only reason he's a reserve is because we cant play Payton and Biz together. Crowder is a slight overall improvement at SF compared to the massive drop off in talent we'd experience going from Biz/Nik to Biz/Zimmerman. Not only that but the one two punch of Payton/Nik has been better for us than what Crowder could bring as an individual player. This is another bandaid fix imo.
Im tired of the front office getting in their own way when it comes to player development. I think AG could become a better version of Crowder if they would just let him get into a damn rhythm and keep growing. I'm concerned that not one of our three top 10 picks has seen any development and I feel like the constant coaching, rotation, and personal changes attribute to that. Henny needs to calm the hell down if he has any knee jerk panic moves in mind.
Outside of blocking shots - that is the main role of a 5 now. Protecting the rim.
For the record, blocking shots does not equal protecting the rim or playing great defense. Some excellent defensive bigs also block a shot or two, but that isn't the only trick of a defensive center.
If your team's offense is inside out in 2017, you are going to have a bad time. That is why the Golden State Warriors and Cavs have journeymen at 5 and still are title favorites.
Just guessing here, but I think the fact that both teams have
multiple stars at every position except center might also be a factor. They're good
despite having journeymen centers, not
because they have journeymen centers.
The drop off in talent at Center is highly overstated. We have too many bigs and could use an upgrade at the wing.
Well, it is unless you happen to watch Vuc and Biz both play, at which point it becomes quite obvious. I'm not saying we shouldn't trade Vuc for a scoring (preferably two-way) wing, but I don't agree with your statements that you can't win with an inside-out approach, and I do believe there is a significant talent difference between Vuc and Biz, at least right now.
edit: Oh, and by the way, we don't have
too many bigs, we have a nice mix of bigs. We just have zero effective wings other than Fournier.
