Mudiay - What's his role?

Post#1 » by NuggetsWY » Thu Jan 5, 2017 2:00 pm

Have you noticed that when Malone plays Nelson with Mudiay, that Nelson acts as a PG and Mudiay acts as a SG?
Mudiay seems to be a much better shooter when he spots up and does a catch-and-shoot.
He certainly doesn't finish well at the basket. His FG% in the paint is terrible. (Sure wish he'd dunk in traffic and not just when he's open.)

Do you think switching Mudiay to SG would make a difference? It would certainly change expectations. As an added bonus, at SG he would not be expected to make so many passes and perhaps his turnover issue would be minimized.

I think putting Mudiay as the SG is a terrible idea, he should be the PG when on the court with Nelson. Especially with Jokic on the court Mudiay can be a spot up shooter letting Jokic run the offense from the high post, but Mudiay is at his best when he is driving down the lane and hitting open shooters. HE does not do it enough, and I think that is a coaching and a head problem with Mudiay, but he is no SG.

Nelson on the other hand needs to go, I do not care what they get for him at this point but he should have been gone a year ago. He is a detriment to both Murray and Mudiay's development as he constantly demands the ball on inbounds plays and then does not even both to try to run the offense half the time, instead just pounding the ball and deciding whether to pass to Barton or Gallo or jack up a bad shot. Add that to his overall attitude and he is one of the guys that has to go.

Yeah, I sorta' thought so, but hey, I'm reaching here. Gotta' agree about Nelson. One thing I know for sure is that Nelson will be playing all the key plays and when the quarter/half/game is coming to an end, he'll race down and launch a three.

I remember in his first SL play he was showing so much passing ability and court vision, it enthralled the crowd, announcders, teammates and certainly the fan......what happened ??

Too often, players let the press go to their head and they change their game.

There's no reason to put Mudiay at SG on a team that has Harris, Murray and Barton. Plus he's a, uh, lousy shooter.

He not only has failed to improve as a shooter, he also appears to have regressed as a playmaker, his primary role.

I hate to say it, but I think he's running out of time. Murray/Harris may be the answer, and then we go from there.

I feel like mudiay is too turnover prone to be a starting pg. he may eventually become that jamal crawford like player off the bench to get the offence going as a 6th man, but his ball iq seems shakey atm to truly seeing him running a team

So, most young PG's struggle with turnovers and he IS still only 21. To give up on him so soon is being rash. Now if we're having his same conversation next year your probably will get better conviction on your point.

Agreed - you know I'm not a fan of Mudiay but I'm not ready to give up. I think he should be swapping spots with Murray and playing backup to Murray with Nelson sitting until an injury occurs. Harris & Barton don't need Murray's help at SG. Less stress might help Mudiay more and not starting and playing just 20 mpg or so might do the trick.

I usually try to give a PG 3 years to adjust to the NBA. It takes time and PG is the most difficult position in the league to adjust to.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

I think it is way to early to really know what he will become. While he did play in China, he missed most of their season with his injury and sitting on the bench watching. So he was very raw and young when he got to the Nuggets. He was forced into starting too early due to Lawson's drinking, but he and Nelson should be fighting with Murray for those minutes. Murray has shown he deserves them, but Nelson and Mudiay seemed to almost be contractually guaranteed their minutes every game. Hell even Koz calling the game tonight on the radio asked why when the other guys are struggling with Malone not put Murray in the game? Let them all earn it and see what happens both Murray and Mudiay may end up all stars or busts or somewhere in between, but let them fight for those minutes.

I think we should experiment with Mudiay off the bench and see how he plays against second units although I would absolutely not bench him for Nelson as that is not the direction the team should be going.

I would try starting Murray at the 1 and if anything it'd like a fire under Mudiay's ass that a rookie has overtaken him. I would really like to see a lineup of Murray-Harris-Chandler-Juancho-Jokic. Jokic surrounded by 4 guys who are constantly cutting/moving and have 3 point range and I'm confident that all would show effort on defense.

Well, if we wont give Murray like 30+ mpg i would keep Mudiay, even Lowry, and he is allstar now, had real problems in first few seasons. You dont give up on potential if you font have bigger one waiting..

Mudiay does not have the all around game that Rondo had in his prime, Mudiay is more of a scorer, but does not seem to be able to get comfortable.

Absolutely right and sometimes I'm guilty of forgetting that when he was drafted, Mudiay was supposed to be playing behind Lawson. But it didn't happen, so they threw him into the deep end of the pool. My problem is where the above post finishes: we have Murray now and he seems more NBA ready in my amateur opinion, so why not let him play? It's not like we're winning with Nelson getting the bulk of the minutes. (The same can be said of some other positions.)

Mudiay is a pg. no question about it. That's where all of his advantages are.

Can't stand the idea of jameer Nelson. No reason to have him and take away minutes from the 2 guards that need to play.
