Chandler rejoins team

Suns center Tyson Chandler rejoined his team Sunday in Oakland after being with family in Southern California following the death of his mother Tuesday.

In his absence, Alex Len averaged 9.8 points and 10.0 rebounds per game on 53 percent shooting and avoided foul issues until Sunday, when he had five in 18 minutes.

Chandler no longer qualifies for league leaders with the missed time but his 13.3 rebounds per game would rank third in the NBA. The guards miss Chandler for how he frees them with the fourth-most screens that set up scores in the NBA (5.1 per game).

“Tyson brings a lot of fire,” Suns guard Devin Booker said. “He’s a vocal leader for us. We need that. He’s been there. In those tough games, he knows what to expect."

Rookie Dragan Bender has been a part of the rotation in Chandler’s absence, averaging 5.0 points in 13.3 minutes per game on 8-of-18 shooting and playing with confidence.

“As sad as I am, and I gotta let myself go through the grieving process, I’m also proud and inspired by what she did and what she overcame,” Chandler said.

“Having seen these young players and seeing where the organization is, I wanted to be (a) part of change,” Chandler said. “To me, that’s just as satisfying as one of the top teams that know in their head that their competing for a championship, because, ultimately this team is going to be competing for a championship, so it’s about setting the seeds now and getting young players to understand the way you’re supposed to play.”

Chandler’s grandfather passed away earlier in the summer, meaning he’s lost both his father figure and mother in the past few months.

Despite all he’s been through, Chandler said he never thought about not playing basketball anymore.

“I need it. I need to be out here,” he said.

From Brooks Ohman:

. The Suns have an offensive rating of 103.4 which ranks 24th and a defensive rating of 109.5 which ranks 25th. Both these numbers are less than ideal.

I put together a chart showing how the Suns’ numbers look compared to rest of league:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/149094809@N03/31066369541/in/dateposted-public/

The lines (in the link above) represent league average for both offensive (y-axis) and defensive rating (x-axis). A lower defensive rating is better so teams on the left side of the graph is better. Thus the best quadrant to be is the top left and the worst is the bottom right. Sadly, the Suns occupy the worst quadrant.

However, there is hope, as Tyson Chandler has only played in 8 of 15 games. His absence has been due to personal matters and not an injury so assuming he can return to playing consistently the Suns will likely see a strong improvement. The chart below shows the difference with Chandler on vs off the floor

Chandler ON court: Off Rtg 105.9 Def Rtg 106.4 Net Rtg -.6

Chandler OFF court: Off Rtg 103.9 Def Rtg 112.6 Net Rtg -8.7

Thus, Chandler being on the floor makes a huge difference for the Suns and his return and consistent playing will boost the Suns to playing closer to a .500 team rather than where they are now. The one positive to Chandler’s absence is the opportunity for younger players like Alan Williams, Dragan Bender, and Marquese Chriss to get more playing time and develop.

The way he's been playing this season, Tyson is closer to being underpaid than overpaid.

As long as you're only paying attention to rebounding. His interior defense has not been great, offers no rim protection, and of course basically has no offensive game except lobs and an occasional fast break finish. Worth what he's making in the current salary climate? Probably. Overpaid? I don't believe so.

For the record, I don't think there's barely any chance that Tyson gets trade to Portland - after all, we're barely behind them in the standings. Why would Tyson want to make that move?

Now if there's a team that might go for him - I suspect that would be Toronto. Chandler was really able to keep Tristan Thompson off the glass. And that's the team they have to beat. And yeah, he doesn't give you much rim protection, but no one on the Cavs does. They just have to find someone to stick Lebron.

... PJ Tucker isn't the worst candidate for that task, either.

That is the problem, and that is the reason (aside from his age) why I think his value around the league is low even with his great rebounding.

Chandler doesn't intimidates no one, and protection is what Toronto and Boston needs to fight against Cleveland and Lebron.

Bogut, when healthy, is a way better rim protector and passer and he is an expiring. I think that Boston is gonna trade for him and Toronto is gonna stay pat with Jonas and Nogueira.

Hopefully Portland wants Chandler badly and they offer us their pick and Ezeli/Davis, for example. That would be great and has a lot of sense for both teams.

We're 4 whole games behind them. I can't see us winning 5 more games than them in the last half. Trading him would be more because we realized we probably can't compete (if we fall more behind by deadline) and if there is an offer on the table we can't turn down.

I think it's more likely we trade him next year around the deadline though, if he continues this play and holds value, unless we are really in the hunt next year.

Though I also think there is a decent chance we don't trade him at all. I'm fine keeping him as long as we trade Knight and Tucker.

HIs value is never going to be higher....has to be traded at the deadline or we will regret it this time next year.
