Widely considered the hottest of the NFL coaching candidates, McDaniels is scheduled to have three-hour interviews with Jacksonville, Los Angeles and the 49ers. He will have one-hour breaks between those interviews, a source told CSNBayArea.com.

The Patriots’ playoff schedule dictates that the interviews will last an hour less than typical. Because New England opens its Super Bowl quest on Saturday, Jan. 14, coach Bill Belichick requested his coaches conclude all their interviews in time to get back to work full time on Sunday to begin preparations on a normal seven-day work week.

The 49ers have received permission to interview Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio, a source said. But it’s still unclear whether Caserio will take part in an interview for the 49ers’ general manager position or whether he is content to remain as the Patriots’ top personnel executive.

One league source described any talks that take place with the top candidates: “You’re not interviewing them as much as they’re interviewing you,” he said.

If Caserio remains with New England, it does not appear to be a deal-breaker for McDaniels, who could be comfortable working with ESPN analyst Louis Riddick or Green Bay director of football operations Eliot Wolf. The 49ers interviewed Wolf and Packers director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst on Thursday.

The part that drives me a little bit crazy because I am sure there are noticeable differences in your upper echelon names versus guys who are still finding their way, but the whole thing on the source saying "you're not interviewing them as much as they're interviewing you" like they're re-inventing the way interviews are being conducted? C'mon.

If you're interviewing anybody who isn't taking anything from you or doesn't want to pull information out of you then you're interviewing a a pure schlub and he should be disqualified from consideration almost immediately. And the fact this stuff is often said about Patriots employees like they JUST GET IT more so than allllllllllllllllll these other names in the league, so stupid and maddening. Tired of that.

I think my hopes are Gm wise Wolf, Riddick, Kirchner Beane in that order. For Head Coach Shanahan, McVay, Mcdaniels almost anyone but Cable in that order.

Matt Maiocco:

The #49ers are currently interviewing Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan for the head-coaching position, the club announces.

Meaning they'll be in the hunt now as well for some of these names. And if you're unaware, Ray Horton was their defensive coordinator. 49ers fans should remember him well from when he was the Cardinals DC for a short period prior to his Browns, Titans, and Browns again, positions.

Jason La Canfora:

Would be very surprised if Gregg Williams is not the next defensive coordinator of the Browns

Consider me skeptical.

Wolf and Shanahan would be my dream but I'm not sure that it'll happen. I'd settle for Riddick and McDaniels or Wolf and McVay.

A lot of fans never would have fired Harbaugh or started a leak campaign against coaches, GM, QB.

Nor hired Tomsula. A lot of fans saw from the start that he would be horrible as HC.

Source: 49ers are Josh McDaniels’ preferred team

For the love of Pete. Although, I wouldn't doubt if he stays and probably would lean that way.

Patriots can’t afford to let personnel czar Nick Caserio go elsewhere

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/patriots/2017/01/patriots_can_t_afford_to_let_personnel_czar_nick_caserio_go_elsewhere

Caserio, who is under contract with the Patriots through at least 2020, makes about $2 million per year, according to a source. It’s decent money, but don’t underestimate a team like the 49ers that may covet him so passionately that they would offer double his salary.

---------------------------

A refresher:

Caserio’s value can’t be undersold. Of course, he takes the lead on negotiations with contracts and trades. Last offseason when the Patriots courted restricted free agent Chris Hogan, Belichick’s sit-down with the wide receiver never touched on money. When they parted, Belichick affirmed to Hogan that Caserio would ensure the deal would be executed, and they struck a creative three-year, $12 million pact.

Caserio also orchestrated recent trades for tight end Martellus Bennett, cornerback Eric Rowe and linebackers Kyle Van Noy and Barkevious Mingo. And Caserio’s pro personnel department properly scouted linebacker Shea McClellin, defensive end Chris Long and Hogan before the offseason signings. To varying degrees, those veterans were discarded by their former employers before fitting in seamlessly with the Patriots.

Caserio’s role has increased substantially since 2013 when Floyd Reese departed, though he has had the same job title since 2008. It took a certain level of on-the-job training to master these negotiating tactics, so the loss of him would serve as a setback from that perspective, even if they elevated their trusted director of college scouting Monti Ossenfort.

There’s a reason for Caserio’s comfort level within the front office as it has translated to his ability to locate well-suited players for the system. Caserio attends virtually every practice, a Belichick mandate that he picked up from Bill Parcells, and he re-watches every practice tape in his office. Caserio frequently meets with the entire coaching staff and exchanges player evaluations, so he understands precisely what type of player each positional coach wants in his room.

The more I'm reading, the more it sounds like McDaniels is gonna be our guy. I guess I'm ok with that, Shanahan is my first choice but you can't always get what you want.

Thanks!

Jed keeps adding to his CV of horrible decisions and those of us who aren't apologists won't overlook them.

I'm fine with this choice as long as he goes NOWHERE NEAR the draft room. Tim Tebow??? :o WTF?

...although his picks at WR were really good. Maybe just keep him from evaluating QBs.

The Tebow pick was just sheer arrogance on his part and he let himself believe that he could be the one to turn him into a great QB.

It's far from a guarantee he leaves New England because as long as York is in charge people are going to be leery of the job but if he really intends on leaving soon to be a HC he might not find a better landing spot.

McDaniels is likely York's top choice so York is likely going to be very accommodating to what McDaniels wants and who he wants as GM.

Just think. He made the playoffs and won a playoff game with Tebow at QB. If that isn't good coaching then I don't know what is. LOL

Seems like it would be like with Ballard and you would've heard of a decline to interview already.

So if I had to guess he might only consider a move if McDaniels is likely to go and he's waiting to see how that pans out first.
