payitforward wrote:Nurkic is an odd case. He's tremendously talented; everyone seems to agree on that. But, so far he has not excelled in the league, and Denver has decided Nokic is going to be their C of the future.

As a scorer, Nurkic's 2 point % is well above average for an NBA big. Plus, he gets to the line at an above average rate for an NBA big. But, he has no 3 pt. shot at all, and he shoots 54% from the line; the result is that his TS% is a little below average.

Nurkic is a terrific rebounder overall & an elite offensive rebounder. His blocks are above average, his assists are too, and so are his steals. But... he turns the ball over a lot. It's his single biggest problem as a player. Especially in that he's not a super-high usage guy like Cousins who has the ball in his hands so much.

But, Nurkic is only 22 and, as I said, tremendously talented. He's also gotten better this year. I'd love to have him. I'll be eager to see what he turns out to be worth. Off the top of my head, I might give our 2018 R1 pick for Nurkic and Denver's 2017 R2 pick.

But, it'd be a big surprise if Ernie targeted him, unfortunately.

His single biggest problem is his defense.

Nurkic is a good player and he is 22 years old! I would trade for him in a heart beat,
Man if we traded a second for Hardaway and a second for Nurkic I would be a super happy camper! Just because those contracts are guaranteed for the year they are less than a mill a piece and can be cut and little to no consequence.

At some point we'll run out of 2nd round picks, right?

We currently have 2 left over the next 5 years.
2017 and 2018. We traded 2019 2020 and 2021.

Actually, we have our 2020 2nd. Technically, it belongs to the Bucks, but it is protected from 31-55. Its highly unlikely we'll be in a position for it to be moved.

With $35M a year devoted to the center position, we're not going to trade for Nurkic.

I'd sure as hell rather have him than Mahinmi though.

A massive downgrade in defense from Manhimi and Gortat. Obviously the contract is nice and Nurkic is young, but I don't think he's the center for the future.

What about this deal:

Wiz trade Mahinmi+Nicholson+2017 1st for Trevor Booker?

Nets only have cap space to offer, so they might as well do anything they can to get picks. The Nets are not going to be signing FAs of any consequence anytime soon. Wiz get out of the disaster Mahinmi & Nicholson contracts for a guy we should have signed instead of Nicholson last year.

But neither is Mahinmi. Only at least Nurkic doesn't cost $16M a year.

Let's not forget that Mahinmi has been a bench player for every year of his career except one.

Also, I trust Zach Lowe who says that Nurkic is really good.

Funny how after all these years, the best stretch 4 we ever got was a washed up Pierce. Until we can figure out how to get a big who shoots 3's, we'll continue to be a dinosaur team.

I really have a hard time endorsing any trade that involves us giving up our pick. With the way free agency is going, marginal veterans now cost a fortune. There is even more value now in finding a competent player in the middle of the first round who is locked into a dirt cheap contract. I'd really hate to give up that asset.

The bottom line is, who exactly do you think we can obtain this summer with the cap room made available from this trade? Keep in mind that it won't actually be cap room, per se, but it'll be luxtax room. Most of our cap room will be spent resigning Porter, so we'd still only have the MLE to work with. That's $8.4M or so.

Would you rather have Booker plus an $8.4M vet? Or would you rather have Mahinmi, Nicholson and a 1st round pick?

What is so infuriating is that if we hadn't signed Ian Mahinmi, Andrew Nicholson we would be at $81M in cap space. We could be taking guys to make a push.

I know, I know - preaching to the choir.

Wizards fully guaranteed the salary of all rookies including House and Ochefu. Ochefu is one of the worst I've seen in a Wiz uniform in a while, and House wasn't considered good enough to get any meaningful minutes before breaking his wrist.
At this time, NBA teams can now use 10 day contracts to try out d-league stars. There's always a few that become solid NBA contributors, but we don't even seem to be willing to try.
I don't get it. According to Jan 6th Bulletsforever article, we have the worst, by far, bench in the league, and 4th worst since stats started in 1997.
We have no backup PG. No backup SG,and no backup C or PF, depending on what you consider Jason Smith.
Understood that Mahinmi should help, but there's also a chance his career is over.
I think we deserve a truthful response from EG/Leonsis instead of usual BS about the state of the bench and what we're planning to do about it.
There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics — quote popularized by Mark Twain.

Wait wait wait...but Ted told us that Nicholson and Mahinmi were going to bolster our bench and give us elite depth. Dck...just accept it. Management was right.

Only if we run out of future years! :)

Nurkic won't be traded for a R2 pick, gambit. No way.

Alright I'm ready to make my trade prediction for this season! Now this isn't what I want to see happen but it makes sense on multiple levels. Here it is:
Wizards trade 1st round pick, Nicholson, Sato, Burke
Phoenix trades Brandon Knight

Why for Wizards:
We continue our yearly donating 1st to Phoenix. Traditions are important.
Currently our guards off the bench are terrible, Knight is just regular bad. #Upgrade.
Brandon Knight is young. I know alot of you have a fetish for young players you sick f****.
We get rid of Nicholson's contract

Why for Phoenix:
Get the better end of the deal. Duh.

LOL !!

We should have a "worst possible trades" thread. Then we can see which of them Ernie makes.

a knight trade is frightening...we keep going back to that well and knight seems like exactly the sort of guy we'd bring in

hoping its nerlens at this point---preferably with decent protection, walk away with him and our 1st for this year
