I always like breaking up lists into tiers as Fats did.

I also like MA's idea about viewing it as who we could least afford to lose in a playoff series. I'm not going solely on that, but weighing both that and how good I think the players are in a vacuum.

1 - Kemba

2 - Cody*
3 - Batum*
4 - MKG
5 - Marvin**

6 - Lamb
7 - Marco
8 - Frank

9 - Ramon
10 - Hawes
11 - Graham

12 - Roy
13 - Roberts

14 - Wood***

* - If we had a reasonable backup center I'd have Batum 2nd and Cody 3rd.
** - If Marv gets his stroke back and MKG doesn't I'd swap their rankings as well.
*** - incomplete, last by default

Core players

1. Kemba

2. Cody
3. Batum
4. MKG (wish we could merge MKG and Batum..)
5. Marvin

Bench

6.pf/c "x"
7.combo guard "y"
8. 3D "z"
9. Marco
10.Lamb
11. Frank
12. Hibbert
13. Sessions
14. Hawes

Others almost never play, no point ranking them. No point trading for another star if you can't fix x y and z

I think it would be interesting to see where all other fan bases stand on their teams as well. In all honesty, most teams have 3-4 clear guys but then after that it gets real shaky. The difference is that they have a stronger 3-4 top guys than us.

Most teams have holes in them and really struggle with depth somewhere. I don't think we can get that much better chasing improvements in the 6-8 range. Our goal should be to bring a guy in that will be in our top 4. Without just depleting the roster in total.

The goal should be get the 4 best players you can and just survive everywhere else. To be a real playoff contender we need another go to guy outside of Kemba.

If it's players we could least afford to lose for a playoff series (this factors in who the backups would be)
1. Kemba
2. Nic
3. Cody
4. Marv
5. MKG
6. Marco
7. Roy
8. Frank
9. Lamb
10. Sess
11. Spence
12. BRob
13. Graham
14. Wood

If it's players that we would most want to not include in a trade:
1. Kemba
2. MKG
3. Cody
4. Nic
5. Marv
6. Lamb
7. Marco
8. Frank
9. Wood
10. Roy
11. Spence
12. Sess
13. Brob
14. Graham

If it's players that I actually like the best and would be the most heartbroken if they were not playing when I attend a game
1. MKG
2. Kemba (mostly because I would have to watch Sessions for 35 minutes)
3. Nic
4. Lamb
5. Marco
6-14. Everyone else
Who I woulda took:
2023: Miller | 2022: Duren | 2021: Bouknight, Jones | 2020: Ball | 2019: PJ | 2018: MPJ | 2017: Monk | 2016: Damian Jones | 2015: Winslow | 2014: Vonleh, Napier | 2013: McLemore | 2012: MKG | 2011: Knight, Kawhi

Current consensus rankings:

1.23 Kemba

2.08 Batum

3.31 Zeller
3.62 MKG

5.15 Marvin
6.62 Marco
6.69 Lamb
7.54 Frank

9.80 Hawes
9.80 Sessions

10.62 Hibbert

12.31 Graham
12.62 Roberts
13.69 Wood

Only real movement was Marco moving up over Lamb and Batum dropping a bit.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Of course that's different from trade value but I suspect on a 1-year expiring most NBA teams would see it similarly.

Is that Cody you are knocking out of the top 3? You've seen how we've played with and w/out Cody this year. I'm a huge fan of what Marvin brings, see my last post, but I have a hard time putting his value ahead of Cody right now, especially considering what we have behind Cody.

No doubt Cody is valuable. As for the question it's between Marvin and MKG and for now I'd still take Marvin, either from the 4 or potentially backup 5 which I'd assume is on the table in a PO series.

Cody is interesting because his ball skills are limited and he's not elite enough defensively (few C's are) to lock him into 34+ playoff minutes. Obviously Cody is central to Nic but good defensive teams will make removing Nic their #1 priority. Considering the center position is where playmaking/spacing provides the highest return Clifford has to weigh Cody vs. the alternatives....which explains 1 difference between Q's 1-3 and Q4.

Kinda related, with every team focusing on 3P shooting the differentiating factors are increasingly about cutting efficiency and playmaking against spaced defenses. Meaning I'd favor Marvin's defense + Marvin's spacing + MKG's wing defense + MKG's cutting + MKG's ball skills when everything falls apart.

I love Kemba but this team (and Kemba (and Cody)) took drastic leaps of respectability when Nic took over as floor general. Suddenly Clifford could coach offense after we acquired him, no small feat. He doesn't wow in the box scores but he just seems so much more irreplaceable than Kemba that I can't justify ranking him below our All-Star worthy guard. A lot of that has to do with every other team seemingly having an All-Star worthy PG though.

I honestly don't understand how anyone could still think this.

Or that anyone can still rank MKG as the best player on this team. MKG is to RealGM Hornets fans what Trump is to the Alt-Right. It doesn't matter what he does, he's going to be number one.

Kemba could average 30-10-15 on 65% shooting and one-fifth of the people on here would still take MKG's monumentally overrated self.

I personally feel like Batum gets overrated on this board a bit just because this team and our fans haven't seen a above average wing player since Gerald Wallace prime. I knew the moment that we finally upgraded from Hendo's mediocrity that we'd be a legit team. I've been asking for a upgrade from Hendo for years and when we finally got it with Batum of course it was going to make everyone better.

We are 10-6 over the past 2 seasons without Batum.

With that said I think it's hard to argue against Kemba easily being the best player on the team.

If you came around more often you might realize that this isn't close to true.

You picked on a Lin fan's ranking (one who is not a regular poster here) and said that was evidence of why you don't post here. Seems like you are looking for reasons.

Which isn't totally uncommon. High quality starters disproportionately rest have nagging injuries against weak teams.

Last year there was a spreadsheet making the rounds about JLin's magical powers as a starter when Melo, Harden, and Kemba were out. Kinda funny for obvious reasons but pretty sure those peddling it were undeterred.

I'm not sure if I think he is overrated on this board, but if he is, I'm guessing this probably is the reason why.

Oh he's overrated because some people think he's more important to the team than Kemba. But that's not to say he's not good.

Take Kemba off this team I doubt we win over 30-35 games. Take Batum off this team I still believe we play over .500 basketball. But with Kemba and Batum combined I believe we can play .600+ basketball. This team is a sum of their parts but without a doubt Kemba is the MVP of the team regardless of what anyone thinks and the numbers prove it.

One person in the entire thread has mkg 1st. and as Ben pointed out its a Lin fan who is not a regular.
