Help me understand the Pistons

Post#1 » by heyPlayer » Tue Jan 10, 2017 9:19 am

What's the problem with the Pistons? They play real good sometimes and sometimes just doesn't show up. For example, they'll beat a team by 20 and outplay them in every aspect and then on another day that team will do the same to the Pistons.

Normally when you do real well against a team, you'll do okay against them the next time, at least for part of the game.

lack leadership, lack a reliable first option on offense (unless Reggie Jackson keeps recovering), we're young.

Do you think Stan Van Gundy is the problem as well? He seems pretty emotionally unstable on the sidelines, what are his coaching philosophies?

It's part of the charm of this team. They keep us busy and crazy trying to fix all the problems. Imagine if they were a great team... How many threads would have never existed! They cannot allow that to happen.

This isn't a accurate reflection of reality. There is probably a dozen plus reasons why a team will do well against one team and bad the next time they meet, and should not be to evaluate any team.

To address your question, we are a young team and young teams struggle with consistency. We hit a groove 20 games in and then added a huge piece to the offense and had to start over and rotations needed adjustment. 20 games in with RJ, we are finally starting to see consistency offensively from RJ and effort defensively.

SVG emotionally unstable? LMAO!

That's a nice way of putting it dude cause he's a lunatic! IF he wasn't born a unathletic white boy he'd have been the greatest player of all time!

He is so competitive that he refused to get back into coaching unless he had free reign to run an entire franchise!

I know there are swings in this game. I know this game very well. My point was that Pistons seem more bipolar than other teams. Are they the type of team that gives up when they feel they don't have a shot?

Lol really? He has free reign over Pistons organization right now? Like he makes almost all the tough on court and business /player decisions?

Sad thing is last year we never give up, no matter who the opponent or the differential were, we made huge comebacks, but this year the team, for whatever reason hasn't been that hungry competitive.

He's the president of basketball operations and head coach, so basically yes. Obviously he has assistants and front office people such as Jeff Bower to help him, and the owner always has final say.

They're inconsistent team with no identity, no rim protection, bad PG defense, streaky 3pt shooting.

Well, our pg and leading scorer missed half the year, so that doesn't help.

Beyond that, we don't have any vocal veteran leadership. Partly related to that, our defensive communication is suspect. We make plays, but we don't play as a unit. We are just about as likely to score 10 in a row as give up 10 in a row.

and my point is your perception is not a accurate reflection of NBA teams, especially young. Your trying to make it sound as if the Pistons are some kind of outlier vs the majority of the league and they are not. furthermore your second question of "Do they give up" is a borderline troll question unless you have some basis behind it as there isw not one team in this league that "just gives up".

Its really as simple as a young team learning to become more consistent and integrating a major piece back into the lineup. Literally have answered your question now twice

Young soon to be luxury tax team.

Young guys getting paid this much...bound to have some bumps in the road.

SVG seems to almost have these guys out of that funk. Soon as we get Morris firing on all cylinders again we will be fine.

In a word: Yes!

He changed the entire medical staff

We have the largest pro scouting team in the league

Almost every office person on the basketball side was hand picked by SVG

He arrived for his meeting with Gores with a freaking folder that detailed a 5 year plan!

Anyone that thinks SVG is "just" the figurehead missed a lot!

SVG is Pop for us - it's the only comparison that really counts since other dudes that have their kind of power (Rivers, Thibs) didn't have to build an entire organization from the ground up

Joe Dumars was behind the curve the last few years he was in charge. SVG spent his time after Orlando learning about analytics and the entire organisation from the Spurs & Boston (amongst other non NBA franchises)

There are plenty of interviews you can watch to get a real insight into SVG. Him being on panels at Sloan are my favourite since there's one with Zarren & RC as well!
