It's funny to me. It's super serious and justifiable to you guys. This is also funny to me.

You seem confused, and angry, all at once.

Everything is going to be ok.

Glad to hear it!

Re-watching season 1 of Fargo, forgot how good this show is, lots of good character actors

He immediately corrected himself and said he should've just called it a ranking of the movies he saw. This really didn't need to be a thing at all.

I think I might rewatch season 1 too. I never thought they could match it but season 2 certainly did just that. Looking forward to #3
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Manchester By The Sea seemed like Damon and the Afflecks got together and said, "hey let's make a movie without a plot, ending, or really any story, but utilize a bunch of Boston accents and make it sad so it gets us nominated for some awards (our names being attached should help)." And they succeeded. 2+ hours I'll never get back. Such a pointless movie.

Also, I hated the Accountant.

I swear I don't hate the Afflecks.

Pretty clearly jokes. Some of you dudes would really struggle in Australia or England or NZ. you'd be fine with Germans that speak English I think.

This might also be the complete list of new movies I saw last year.

Actually I may have seen that this year. Damn. Anyway seeing as this is also the book thread, apparently George Karl in his book talks about the rigged Sixers/Bucks series and Stern Being visibly upset at a not called foul on AI.

At least you both have it properly ranked as the worst movie you've seen this year.

It was decent. But then I didn't even notice the digital bad guy. I was like "wait how is that dude in the movie he's got to be really old by now" then just forgot about it. Ben Mendelsohn stole those scenes anyway. :D

Yeah, I'm just kidding. I thought it was decent. Of the 60 some movies I've seen from 2016 it's probably in the 30s range. I agree that Mendelsohn's character is the most interesting, or at least had the potential to be. The rest of the cast of misfits felt too vaguely defined for me to really care anything about them. Complete opposite problem with Episode VII for me, which I thought had a great new cast of characters but they deserved a better story to be in.

So do Americans cheer for the rebels or the empire?

It's complicated. We like the rebels but know they will eventually become a new empire.

I actually enjoyed them all except ID:R, which might have been the worst movie I've ever seen. Luckily, it was free on my in-flight entertainment on a work trip I took a couple months ago.

ReasonablySober wrote:I've almost exhausted on my movies of 2016 list. I'm sure I'll see Moonlight, Arrival, Don't Think Twice, Doctor Strange, and Jackie eventually, but nothing else on the list looks interesting.

Here are my top 25 of 2016:

1 - Hell or High Water
Part western, heist movie, and reflection of our financial times. One of the super rare movies where I legitimately wouldn't change a thing. The soundtrack was absolutely amazing.
Grade: A

3 - Hush
It was a great year for horror. Like, really great. I haven't been able to say that in a long time.

Hush was my clear favorite. Home invasion flick with a couple twists, the obvious one being that the protagonist is deaf and mute. The movie builds suspense in a way I don't remember other similar movies pulling off. John Gallager Jr. was the definition of menacing.
Grade: A

5 - Don’t Breathe
Another awesome home invasion movie with a twist. In this one there really aren't any protagonists. Even the characters the film tries to make the ones you root for are generally **** people. But the film is super suspenseful and goes in directions you absolutely won't expect. My jaw was on the ground a few times. Legitimately scary.
Grade: A-

6 - The Accountant
It's autistic Jason Bourne and I'm not sure I can remember better Affleck. Just a super solid movie with an excellent final act. I go into action movies expecting to be underwhelmed but this was just really good from start to finish.
Grade: B+

7 - Rogue One
A Star Wars movie that felt like a war movie. I think you can definitely nitpick parts of the film (hated Forest Whitaker's character, and the decision to bring back digital Peter Cushing was horrible), but I enjoyed seeing a Star Wars movie that didn't seem like an advertisement for toys. The final 3rd was among the best stuff the series has done.
Grade: B+

13 - Green Room
Brutal, timely (unfortunately), and kinda overrated. I've seen this pop up really high on a lot of lists from people who watch way more movies than I do, and I don't entirely get it. I think it's a good flick and worth watching, but like a lot of indie terror films of recent years (Babadook, It Follows), I think it's getting a lot of unearned praise.
Grade: B

20 - Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
I really liked the first Jack Reacher, but this one felt like everyone mostly mailed it in for a cash grab. Bumping it up to a rater R movie might have allowed a more mature plot. As it stands this felt like a two hour episode from a CBS procedural.
Grade: B-

My thoughts on some of these:

1. Hell or High Water-- Fabulous movie. Watched it a second time and was just as good during the second viewing.

2. Hush-- I agree with you that it was really good. Most horror movies i think suck for varying reasons, but this was surprisingly good.

3. Don't Breathe-- Not terrible, but that's about it. This was basically a dumbed-down version of Hush.

4. The Accountant-- The premise and beginning of the movie would have been ok if not for the typical over the top action that follows where Ben Affleck manages to become some untouchable Rambo like killing force because well he's autistic.

4. Rogue One-- Started out good, but like The Force Awakens, dragged on to long, especially the never ending battle scenes which could have been cut in half so i wasn't left yawning.

5. The Green Room-- Like so many horror movies, it could have been so much better. Frustrating because i love really well made scary movies, but don't come around often.

6. Jack Reacher 2-- Didn't see it so usually i wouldn't comment, but with as horrific as the first one was, you'd have to pay me to see part two. The ending to part one was as bad as it gets as Tom Cruise armed with a knife managed to kill about a dozen guys armed with automatic machine guns. My brother dragged me to the theater for that and it was even worse than i expected.
